Check why the PC is ineligible before trying to install Windows 11
Use Microsoft’s PC Health Check eligibility guide to run the Windows 11 compatibility check. It reports whether the computer qualifies and identifies reasons for failure, so you can distinguish a potentially fixable setting or component issue from a device that does not meet the requirements.
Do not assume that every warning is fixable. Check your computer maker’s guidance for the exact model before changing firmware or buying parts. Microsoft gives adding RAM and updating BIOS to enable TPM 2.0 as examples of possible remedies; neither is a universal fix, and a component change does not necessarily resolve CPU or platform eligibility. A manufacturer may also identify driver or compatibility holds that affect whether an upgrade is available.
Choose between a supported fix, replacing the PC, or accepting unsupported status

Microsoft’s unsupported-device guidance says installing Windows 11 on a PC that misses minimum requirements is not recommended. It warns that the device will not be supported by Microsoft, compatibility issues may occur, and updates are not guaranteed. Microsoft also says damages caused by incompatibility are not covered under the manufacturer’s warranty. Bypassing a setup check does not change those terms.

Microsoft’s official material documents installation methods for supported devices, but does not validate a current bypass procedure. Community instructions do not establish that a workaround will work across current Windows builds or guarantee future updates, so they should not be treated as an officially supported recipe.
If the PC qualifies, use a supported installation method
Wait for Windows Update
Microsoft recommends waiting for the Windows 11 upgrade offer in Windows Update when the device is eligible. If no offer appears, check the PC maker’s compatibility information and Microsoft’s current installation guidance rather than assuming the device is ready.

Use Installation Assistant or installation media
For supported devices, Microsoft also documents Installation Assistant and installation media as alternatives. Running Setup from within the current Windows installation can preserve files and apps depending on the options you select. Review the choices shown during Setup; do not assume every path preserves everything.
To create official installation media, Microsoft specifies a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB. Creating the media erases the drive’s contents, so copy anything important off it first. Microsoft also recommends backing up the PC and checking the computer maker’s website for needed drivers. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page.

Know what a clean install does
Booting the computer from installation media to perform a fresh installation is different from running Setup inside Windows. Microsoft warns that this method completely wipes the target hard drive and the existing Windows installation, including installed apps. Back up files before starting and make sure you select the intended drive. The detailed Windows 11 installation instructions describe the supported methods and the fresh-install warning.

Microsoft’s warning is practical, not just a setup message: unsupported hardware can have compatibility problems, and Microsoft does not promise updates for it. In particular, do not count on receiving security updates. Decide whether that risk is acceptable before proceeding, especially if the PC is used for sensitive work or information.

If you upgrade and encounter problems, Microsoft recommends using the Go back option to return to Windows 10. The option is available for 10 days after the upgrade; after that, the files needed for rollback are removed. Read Microsoft’s unsupported-device guidance for its rollback instructions. A backup remains important because rollback is time-limited and is not a substitute for protecting personal files.
