“Windows 11 Lite” is not an official Microsoft edition. If you mean a trimmed Windows image, the best-known route described here is to build one yourself with NTDEV’s Tiny11 Builder, using a Windows ISO as the starting point. That is a community project, not a Microsoft-supported Windows release. For the supported option, install standard Windows 11 through Windows Update or Microsoft’s official installation media.
Choose the supported route if you want Microsoft’s standard installation and support conditions. Consider Tiny11 Builder only if you understand the trade-offs of a customized image and can follow its project instructions. Neither route makes a PC that fails Microsoft’s requirements officially eligible for Windows 11.
What “Windows 11 Lite” means
Microsoft’s documentation does not name “Windows 11 Lite” as an official edition. The term is commonly used to look for a customized Windows image with components or apps removed. Tiny11 Builder is a community project that provides PowerShell scripts to build a trimmed image from a Windows ISO; it is not an official Microsoft product. See Tiny11 Builder’s project README.
The distinction matters: with Microsoft’s route, you install standard Windows 11 from Microsoft. With Tiny11 Builder, you use a Windows ISO to create a modified image locally. Avoid treating an arbitrary pre-modified ISO as trustworthy just because its filename says “Lite” or “Tiny11.” The project instructions described here start from a Windows ISO from Microsoft or Rufus; they do not authenticate third-party downloads.

Check whether your PC meets Windows 11 requirements
Microsoft’s minimum requirements include a compatible 64-bit processor running at 1 GHz or faster with at least two cores, 4 GB of memory, and 64 GB of storage. The PC also needs UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable, TPM 2.0, DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver, and a qualifying high-definition display. Microsoft notes that internet access is needed for updates and some features, and that Windows 11 Home requires internet and a Microsoft Account to complete first-use setup. More storage may be needed over time for updates and features. Check the current Windows 11 system requirements.
Microsoft does not recommend installing Windows 11 on hardware that fails these requirements. It warns that an unsupported PC may have compatibility problems, is not eligible for Microsoft support, and is not guaranteed to receive updates, including security updates. A custom image does not change that support position. See Microsoft’s unsupported-device guidance.

Choose an installation route
| Route | Image and support | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft-supported Windows 11 | Standard Windows installation using Microsoft’s update or installation-media process; support depends on the PC meeting requirements. | Eligible PCs where standard Windows and Microsoft’s documented installation path are preferred. | It is not a trimmed “Lite” edition. |
| Tiny11 Builder regular script | Community-built customized image created locally from a Windows ISO; not a Microsoft-supported edition. | Users who specifically want to build a trimmed image and accept responsibility for its serviceability and compatibility. | Removed apps and components can affect what is available; future behavior and compatibility are not guaranteed by the cited project instructions. |
| Tiny11 Builder Core script | Community-built Core image. | Testing or development, according to the project’s release notes. | The project says it is not for regular use because it lacks serviceability, including adding languages, updates, or features after creation. |
The Tiny11 Builder README recommends its regular maker script for a more serviceable image. Its release page says Core is intended for testing and development, not ordinary use. These are project instructions, not Microsoft assurances. See the Tiny11 Builder releases.
Install standard Windows 11 from Microsoft
Option 1: Use Windows Update
For a supported upgrade on an eligible PC, Microsoft recommends using Windows Update when it offers Windows 11 for that device. Check Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update in Windows 10, then follow the offered upgrade steps. An offer may not appear if the device is not eligible or the upgrade is not yet offered for it.

Option 2: Run the Installation Assistant or use installation media
Microsoft also provides the Installation Assistant and official installation media on its Windows 11 download page. The page showed Windows 11 version 25H2 when checked; that is a dated snapshot, so consult the page for the current release and download options.
Installation media can be used to upgrade or perform a clean install. If you run setup from within Windows, it may offer choices to keep personal files and apps, keep files only, or keep nothing. For a clean install from an ISO, Microsoft’s instructions say to mount the ISO, run setup.exe, and select “Nothing” under “Change what to keep.” Back up first. Microsoft’s ISO instructions also warn that the USB drive used to create bootable media is erased; follow the tool’s displayed capacity requirement, since it can vary with the ISO and method.

Boot from USB for a fresh install
- Back up documents, photos, and other files you need to keep. A clean install erases the drive’s contents, including files and installed apps.
- Create bootable installation media using Microsoft’s current download page and instructions. Do not use a USB drive containing files you need; the media-creation process erases it.
- Restart the PC and open its boot menu, then choose the USB drive. The boot-menu key varies by manufacturer and model; use the device manual rather than assuming one universal key.
- Follow Windows Setup to install Windows 11. Confirm the target drive carefully before deleting partitions or proceeding with a clean install.
Microsoft explicitly warns: “This method completely wipes the contents of the hard drive and the existing installation of Windows and installs a fresh copy of Windows 11. All files and installed apps on the device are lost.” Read Microsoft’s installation-media guidance before choosing this route.

This route is for users who specifically want a locally built customized image. The project’s README says to begin with a Windows ISO from Microsoft or Rufus, rather than an arbitrary pre-modified image. Its steps use PowerShell 5.1 and require administrator access. Project directions can change, so read the current README before using a particular script or release.

- Download a Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft’s official download page or from Rufus, as the project README permits.
- Mount the ISO in Windows. Note the drive letter assigned to the mounted ISO and choose a separate scratch drive letter for the build process.
- Open PowerShell 5.1 as an administrator. Use the regular
tiny11maker.ps1script for a general-purpose trimmed image; the project describes it as removing apps while keeping the system more serviceable than Core. - Follow the README’s commands to set the execution policy to
Bypassfor the current PowerShell process, then run the script with the ISO and scratch drive letters as instructed. - Select the Windows edition/SKU when prompted, then let the script create the customized image.
The README says the process-scoped execution-policy change applies to that PowerShell session and leaves the original policy in place after the session ends. Do not broaden the change to a permanent machine-wide policy unless you understand the implications.
Why the regular maker is preferable to Core for ordinary use
The Tiny11 Builder release notes say Core is not suitable for regular use because it is not serviceable in the same way: it cannot add languages, updates, or features after creation. The project characterizes it as a testing and development option. A trimmed image also does not guarantee better performance, universal compatibility, security, or future updates; those results are not established by the project instructions cited here.
Decide whether to install now
- Your PC meets Microsoft’s requirements and you want the least ambiguous support path: use Windows Update when offered or Microsoft’s official installation media.
- You want a customized image and accept community-project trade-offs: build it locally from a Windows ISO with Tiny11 Builder’s regular maker, and review the current README and release notes.
- Your PC fails Microsoft’s requirements: do not treat Tiny11 or another modified image as a way to make the hardware officially supported. Microsoft warns that unsupported installations may have compatibility problems and are not guaranteed updates or support.
- You are considering a clean install: make a separate backup first and verify the target drive before starting; the install removes existing files and apps.
What Windows 10’s end of support changes
Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 PC can still work, but Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for it. That makes the choice more pressing for people with older PCs, but it does not remove Microsoft’s warnings about installing Windows 11 on unsupported hardware. See Microsoft’s Windows installation guidance.
