Umami’s official Docker Compose setup starts the analytics app and a PostgreSQL database together. On the machine running the stack, start it with docker compose up -d, then open http://localhost:3000. Sign in with the documented initial credentials and change the password immediately.
Before you start
You need Docker Compose installed and available on the machine where Umami will run. The official installation guide uses Umami’s supplied Compose configuration; it does not provide operating-system-specific Docker installation steps. See Umami’s installation guide for the current setup and source instructions.
This quick start is for the bundled database path: Compose starts both Umami and PostgreSQL. You do not need to provision a separate PostgreSQL service for this setup.
Start Umami with Docker Compose

In the directory containing the Compose file, run:
docker compose up -d -
Wait for the containers to start, then open
http://localhost:3000on the machine running the stack. The official guide names this local address for the app.
For a server deployment, localhost is not an externally reachable address for visitors or administrators connecting from another machine. You will need an appropriate network route, commonly through a reverse proxy. The Compose quick start does not specify a proxy configuration, so configure that according to your server and network rather than treating the local URL as a public endpoint.
Log in and change the initial password
At the login screen, use the credentials documented by Umami:

Change the password immediately after the first login, as the official installation guide instructs. Do not leave a publicly reachable installation using its initial credentials.
Bundled PostgreSQL or an external database?
The supplied Compose setup is the straightforward option when you want Umami and PostgreSQL started together. An alternative is to run Umami’s prebuilt PostgreSQL image and connect it to a database you provide. That changes who operates the database and how the app connects to it; it is not the same bundled Compose setup.

The official installation documentation identifies docker.umami.is/umami-software/umami:postgresql-latest as a prebuilt PostgreSQL image option. In that route, Umami requires a user-provided database and the DATABASE_URL environment variable. Check the installation page for current image guidance and the environment-variable reference for configuration details.

Configure secrets and PostgreSQL connection URLs
For an external-database setup, Umami documents DATABASE_URL as the only required environment variable. It also recommends a unique APP_SECRET for every installation; this random string secures authentication tokens. Generate one with:
openssl rand -hex 32Keep the resulting secret private and configure it in the app’s environment. Do not reuse the same value across installations. Umami’s environment-variable documentation describes these settings.
When the database offers pooled and direct connections
A pooled connection can suit normal application traffic, while Prisma migrations may need a direct PostgreSQL connection. Umami provides DIRECT_DATABASE_URL for that migration connection when DATABASE_URL points to a pool that should not be used for migration commands. Whether you need it depends on the database provider and connection arrangement.

Provider instructions are not interchangeable. Umami’s Supabase guide shows a pooled DATABASE_URL alongside a direct DIRECT_DATABASE_URL. Its Neon guide recommends adding ?pgbouncer=true&connect_timeout=10 to the pooled connection string. Follow the relevant current provider guide rather than copying either example as universal PostgreSQL syntax: Supabase setup and Neon setup.
When to consider managed hosting or managed PostgreSQL
Umami documents example deployments on Northflank and bunny.net, as well as connections to managed PostgreSQL services such as Neon and Supabase. These are optional alternatives to running the bundled Compose stack. Their setup patterns do not establish a universal comparison of price, speed, reliability, or ease.
Choose based on operational responsibilities and architecture: whether the database is bundled or external; who handles persistent storage, backups, upgrades, and availability; whether the app and database communicate on a private network or over an external connection; and whether pooled and direct database URLs are available for runtime and migrations. Update an existing Compose installation
For Compose users, Umami’s current update instructions use this sequence:

Pull the latest image:
docker compose down -
Recreate and start the containers:
docker compose up -d
See Umami’s update guide before updating, particularly when moving between major versions. The guide notes that major upgrades such as the move to v3 can leave PostgreSQL query-planner statistics stale after schema migrations, which may slow dashboard queries on large installations; in that specific upgrade context, it recommends running ANALYZE;. This is not a routine command required after every restart or minor update.
What changes for older MySQL installations?
Umami v3 removes MySQL support and standardizes on PostgreSQL. The documented MySQL-to-PostgreSQL migration path requires the MySQL schema to be synchronized with v2.19.0 before following the migration guide. If you are upgrading an older MySQL-backed installation, consult Umami’s migration instructions; the fresh Compose setup above is not a data-migration procedure.
