TrollMisaka is not the right installation method for most iPhones and iPads. The iOS Guide calls it “extremely unreliable” and says it should be avoided in most cases. Its narrow recommendation is for A8(X) iPads on iOS/iPadOS 15.7.2–15.8.6 when you do not want to turn off Find My or jailbreak. Check your exact device and version in the iOS Guide compatibility chart before following the steps below.
First, check whether TrollMisaka fits your device
TrollStore and TrollMisaka are different: TrollStore is the utility that installs and permanently signs apps; TrollMisaka is one possible route for installing it. TrollStore’s overall supported-version statement does not mean TrollMisaka works on every supported device. The TrollStore project lists support for iOS 14.0 beta 2–16.6.1, iOS 16.7 RC (20H18), and iOS 17.0. The project says iOS 17.0.1 and later patched the underlying CoreTrust bug.

The current iOS Guide compatibility chart assigns methods by iOS version and device architecture. For the title’s stated range, the chart lists TrollInstallerX for A8 devices and TrollHelperOTA for arm64e (A12–A17/M1–M2) on iOS 14.0 beta 2–14.8.1. For iOS 15.7.2–15.8.6, it lists TrollMisaka for A8, TrollInstallerX for A9–A11, and no method in the arm64e column. The TrollMisaka guide narrows its recommendation to A8(X) iPads in that latter range. Do not assume that all A8 devices behave identically.
For versions between those ranges, consult the chart rather than extrapolating from the steps here: it assigns other methods depending on version and architecture. In the 15.7.2–15.8.6 range, the guide also lists TrollRestore, which requires a computer and Find My disabled, and Dopamine via PlumeImpactor for users whose goal is jailbreaking. The TrollMisaka-specific recommendation is the A8(X) iPad case where you want to avoid disabling Find My and do not want to jailbreak.

What you need before starting
- An iPhone or iPad on iOS/iPadOS 14.0–15.8.6, with its exact model and architecture checked against the compatibility chart.
- The Tips app installed.
- The latest PlumeImpactor and TrollMisaka.
- A computer and a cable that connects it to your device. Windows users also need the latest iTunes.
The installation instructions are maintained in the iOS Guide’s TrollMisaka guide. Its warning is explicit: “This method is extremely unreliable, and should be avoided in most cases.” The guide says the installation can take several tries; it is not a guaranteed or one-tap process.
Install TrollMisaka and prepare its keyboard
- Connect the iPhone or iPad to the computer and allow the computer to access its contents.
- Open PlumeImpactor, sign in under Settings, drag the TrollMisaka IPA into the app, and choose Install.
- On the device, open Settings → General → Device Management (sometimes called Profiles and Device Management) → your Apple Account, then trust TrollMisaka.
- Open TrollMisaka, then leave it in the app switcher rather than fully closing it.
- Open Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard. Select TrollMisaka and turn on Allow Full Access.
- Reopen TrollMisaka, open the app switcher, and reboot the device.
Keep TrollMisaka in the app switcher until TrollStore has installed. The guide warns that fully closing the app before installation means restarting the instructions from the beginning.

Trigger the installation and add persistence
- Unlock the device and immediately open Spotlight Search.
- Use the globe icon to select the TrollMisaka keyboard, then tap “kopen.” If the device reboots, repeat this step.
- Tap “Install TrollStore.” The guide says this may take several attempts. If the keyboard app refreshes or the attempt fails, it suggests trying Safari.
- Reopen TrollMisaka from the app switcher and tap “Install TrollStore.” The device should respring.
- In TrollStore, open Settings → Install Persistence Helper and select Tips.
What TrollStore and its persistence helper do
The TrollStore project describes TrollStore as a “permasigned jailed app” that can permanently install IPAs. It attributes this capability to an AMFI/CoreTrust bug: iOS does not correctly verify code signatures in binaries with multiple signers. That underlying capability is separate from the installation route, so version and device compatibility still determine which method is appropriate.
A persistence helper in a system app can re-register TrollStore and installed apps after an icon-cache reload. In the TrollMisaka workflow, Tips is the selected helper app. Persistence is method- and version-dependent: the project notes that on jailbroken iOS 14 installations, TrollHelper persists through icon-cache reloads as a system app.
