On Android 8.0 (API 26) and later, you usually grant installation permission to the specific browser or file manager that starts the install. Check the developer and download source first: apps from outside Google Play can put your device and personal data at risk.
Before you install: check the app and its source
Android’s app package format is commonly called APK, but not every app is distributed as one standalone APK. Some apps use additional package files or a separate installer, so follow the instructions from the app’s official distributor rather than assuming one downloaded file is sufficient.
- Get the app from its developer’s official website or a reputable app marketplace. The official guidance cited here does not rank third-party marketplaces by safety.
- Check that the app name and developer identity match the developer’s official channel.
- Be wary of unsolicited messages or callers urging you to install an app. Google warns that apps from outside trusted sources can damage a device, cause data loss, or put personal information at risk.
Google Android Help recommends installing apps from verified developers. Its guidance on downloading apps from other sources explains the risks and basic installation process.
Install an app from outside Google Play
- Download the app package from the developer’s official site or a marketplace you have chosen to trust. Confirm the app and developer before opening the download.
- Open the downloaded package. Depending on your device, you may open it from the browser’s download list or a file manager. Follow the Android installer prompts.
- Allow installation from the app that started it, if prompted. On Android 8.0 (API 26) and later, the permission is generally specific to that source app—for example, your browser or file manager. Use the prompt to open the relevant setting, enable permission for that source, and return to the installer.
- Review the installer’s details and choose Install only if you still trust the app and its source. If Android displays a security warning, read it rather than treating it as a routine obstacle.
- Turn the source permission off afterward if you do not expect to install more apps through that browser or file manager. You can return to the same setting to change it.
On Pixel devices, the setting is shown as Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps. Other manufacturers may use different names or menu paths. Android’s alternative distribution documentation describes the per-source permission on Android 8.0 and later, as well as the older setting.

How the permission differs by Android version

Some customized Android versions do not follow the same steps, and some network providers may disallow installation from unknown sources. If the setting is missing or the instructions do not match your phone, consult the device maker’s guidance rather than changing unrelated security settings.
Keep Play Protect on and take its warnings seriously
Google Play Protect scans installed apps, including apps installed from outside Google Play. It can warn about, block, or remove apps it identifies as potentially harmful. A scan is a useful protection layer, but it does not prove that a download source or developer is trustworthy. Keep Play Protect enabled and do not routinely bypass a malware warning to complete an install. Google describes its protections in Google Play Protect Help.

If Android says the developer is unverified
A warning specifically about an unverified developer may be part of Google’s separate developer-verification system, not the ordinary “allow from this source” permission. The rollout is limited and changing, so an unverified-developer block does not apply to every sideload or every Android device.
As described in Google’s guidance on app installs from unverified developers, the initial phase began in September 2026 for participating stores in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. Google names Google Play, HONOR App Market, OPPO App Market, Palm Store, vivo V-Appstore, and Xiaomi GetApps among the participating stores. Google says a global expansion across install sources on certified Android devices is planned for 2027. The described rollout excludes AOSP and non-certified devices and includes regional exceptions; check the current Google Help page for your device and location.

If the block offers an advanced installation flow, Google’s instructions require a 24-hour wait. After that, the user can keep the flow enabled for seven days or indefinitely, and the install warning remains. This is a distinct process from granting a browser or file manager permission to install apps; do not assume it is necessary for an ordinary sideload.

Installing an app is only one part of choosing where to get it. Before relying on a non-Play distribution channel, consider who operates it, how you will receive updates, and where to get developer support. Do not infer that one third-party store is safer than another without evidence about that store and the specific app. Continue to pay attention to Play Protect alerts after installation.
