You can install the NVIDIA App on Windows 11 using NVIDIA’s standalone installer; the Microsoft Store is not required. You do not need to uninstall GeForce Experience first, and signing in is optional.

This guide covers system requirements, two official installation methods, first launch, driver updates, and common installation problems. NVIDIA’s current listed release is version 11.0.8.

Before installing NVIDIA App

Check that your Windows 11 PC meets NVIDIA’s current requirements:

Requirement NVIDIA’s current specification
Operating system Windows 10 or Windows 11
Memory 2 GB RAM
Free disk space 600 MB
Graphics driver GeForce driver 551.52 or later
Supported GPUs GeForce RTX 20, 30, 40, and 50 Series
Processor Intel Pentium G, Core i3/i5/i7 or newer, or AMD FX, Ryzen 3/5/7/9, or Threadripper or newer

NVIDIA’s FAQ mentions some older GTX and MX graphics families, but its newer dedicated system-requirements page lists RTX 20-, 30-, 40-, and 50-series GPUs. If you have older hardware, check NVIDIA’s compatibility information for your exact model rather than assuming the App will work.

Method 1: Install NVIDIA App from NVIDIA’s website

  1. Open NVIDIA’s official NVIDIA App download page.
  2. Click Download Now.
  3. Save the installer to your PC.
  4. Open the downloaded installer file. If Windows displays a User Account Control prompt, select Yes.
  5. Follow the installation instructions shown by the installer.
  6. When setup finishes, open NVIDIA App from the Start menu.

NVIDIA does not document a permanent, exact sequence of every installer screen, and the wording can change between releases. Follow the options shown by the current installer rather than relying on labels from an older guide.

Method 2: Install NVIDIA App with a GeForce driver

Current GeForce Game Ready and Studio driver packages can include NVIDIA App as an optional component.

  1. Open NVIDIA’s GeForce driver download page.
  2. Select your graphics card and Windows 11, then search for the driver.
  3. Download and open the current driver package.
  4. During setup, choose the option that includes NVIDIA App if it is offered.
  5. Complete the driver installation and restart Windows if requested.

This method is useful if your graphics driver is also outdated. NVIDIA’s driver page lists the App as an additional installation option; the available driver version changes over time.

Do you need to uninstall GeForce Experience?

No. NVIDIA supports upgrading from GeForce Experience, so you can install NVIDIA App without removing it first. The current driver installer can also provide the App as an optional component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After NVIDIA App is working, you can remove GeForce Experience if you no longer need it through Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Do not remove it as a prerequisite.

Set up NVIDIA App after installation

1. Sign in or continue without an account

Signing in is optional for normal NVIDIA App use. You can use the main features without an NVIDIA account. Sign-in is mainly useful for redeeming GPU bundles and rewards.

To sign in, open the App and click Log In. Your default browser will open a new tab. Complete the NVIDIA account sign-in in that browser tab.

Version 11.0.8 adds 240 FPS ShadowPlay recording for supported GeForce RTX 50- and 40-series graphics cards. It also adds Surround options under System > Displays > Surround, including options to keep the taskbar on one display and maximize windows across displays.

3. Update the graphics driver

  1. Open NVIDIA App.
  2. Select Drivers.
  3. Choose the available Game Ready Driver or Studio Driver.
  4. Download and install the driver.

You can switch between Game Ready and Studio drivers in the App. Game Ready drivers are generally aimed at new games and game updates, while Studio drivers prioritize tested applications and creative workflows.

What happened to NVIDIA Control Panel?

NVIDIA App and the classic NVIDIA Control Panel can coexist. Installing one does not automatically make the other incompatible.

NVIDIA is retiring the classic Control Panel for GeForce Game Ready and Studio drivers. Existing installations can remain unless a clean driver installation removes them. The classic Control Panel is still available through the Microsoft Store, but NVIDIA says it will not receive further features, fixes, or other changes for GeForce users.

If NVIDIA App will not install

Restart and retry

For a generic installation failure, NVIDIA’s recommended first step is simple:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Restart Windows 11.
  2. Run the NVIDIA App installer again.
  3. If it fails again, uninstall the existing NVIDIA App installation.
  4. Restart Windows once more.
  5. Download a fresh installer from NVIDIA’s official App page and run it.

Version 11.0.7 fixed an intermittent installation failure that could occur when the PC was offline. Even so, use an active internet connection during installation unless you have a specific reason not to.

Stop NVIDIA services and processes

Running NVIDIA components can prevent an update or reinstall from completing.

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Type services.msc and press Enter.
  3. Stop each Windows service whose service name starts with NVIDIA.
  4. Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
  5. End NVIDIA processes and processes whose names begin with nv.
  6. Run the NVIDIA App installer again.

Only stop processes you can identify as NVIDIA-related. Avoid ending unrelated Windows services.

Uninstall the existing App

Use the current Windows 11 path:

Settings > Apps > Installed apps > NVIDIA App > … > Uninstall

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restart after uninstalling, then repeat the service and process cleanup before installing a fresh copy.

Remove NVIDIA installer logging keys only when necessary

NVIDIA’s troubleshooting instructions identify these registry keys for persistent installer failures, if they exist:

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\Logging
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\NVIDIA Corporation\Logging

Back up the registry first and be precise: deleting the wrong registry key can damage Windows or another application. Before changing the registry, also review security software, Group Policy restrictions, and other system-configuration issues.

Why some display settings are missing on a laptop

On many Optimus or MSHybrid laptops, the internal display is controlled by the integrated GPU rather than the NVIDIA GPU. In that configuration, System > Displays may not appear in NVIDIA App.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NVIDIA says display controls may become available when an external monitor connected directly to the NVIDIA GPU is the primary display, or when the laptop is switched to a dedicated-GPU mode through BIOS or Advanced Optimus.

To inspect the hardware configuration, open System > My Rig > View System Detail. If your laptop supports it, check the manufacturer’s BIOS or graphics-mode utility for an NV GPU or dGPU mode instead of iGPU or Auto. The setting names depend on the laptop manufacturer.

When Alt+Z does not open the overlay

If pressing Alt+Z does nothing:

  1. Open Settings > About and confirm the App installed correctly.
  2. Open Drivers and update to a GeForce driver version 551.52 or later.
  3. Restart Windows after the driver installation.
  4. Try the shortcut inside a supported game or application.

NVIDIA warns that the overlay and other App features may not work correctly with an older unsupported driver. Some games and applications can also be incompatible with particular overlay features.

No. Sign-in is optional for normal use. An account is primarily needed for redeeming GPU bundles and rewards.

Can NVIDIA App and NVIDIA Control Panel be installed together?

Yes. NVIDIA says the two applications can coexist. However, supported GeForce settings are moving into NVIDIA App, and the classic Control Panel is no longer receiving new GeForce features or fixes.

Is the Microsoft Store required to install NVIDIA App?

No. Use the standalone installer from NVIDIA’s NVIDIA App download page. The Microsoft Store is relevant to reinstalling the classic NVIDIA Control Panel, not required for NVIDIA App.

Why is System > Displays missing in NVIDIA App?

This commonly happens on Optimus or MSHybrid laptops where the integrated GPU controls the internal display. Connect a monitor directly to the NVIDIA GPU or switch the laptop to a dedicated dGPU/NV GPU mode if the hardware supports it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What driver version does NVIDIA App require?

NVIDIA currently lists GeForce driver 551.52 or later. Update the driver from the App’s Drivers page if the overlay or other features do not work.

The Bottom Line

Download NVIDIA App from NVIDIA’s official page, run the standalone installer, and update the graphics driver from Drivers after setup. You do not need to remove GeForce Experience, use the Microsoft Store, or create an NVIDIA account. If setup fails, restart Windows first, then remove the existing App and stop NVIDIA services and processes before trying again.
