To develop SSIS packages in Visual Studio 2022, install SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT) as a Visual Studio component, then add the separate SQL Server Integration Services Projects extension. The extension supplies the project and design tools; it does not install the SSIS runtime used to execute packages. Follow the steps below to create a project, then install the runtime separately if you need to run packages on this computer.

What you need to install

“Install SSIS in Visual Studio” can mean two different things: setting up package development tools or installing the software that executes packages. For development in Visual Studio 2022, you need SSDT and the SSIS Projects extension. To execute packages locally, you also need the SSIS runtime installed through SQL Server Setup. Microsoft notes that installing Integration Services alone does not install the tools required to design and develop packages (Microsoft Learn: Install Integration Services (SSIS)).

Install SSDT in Visual Studio 2022

  1. Close Visual Studio if it is open, then launch Visual Studio Installer from the Windows Start menu.

  2. Find your Visual Studio 2022 installation and select Modify.

  3. In the workload list, select SQL Server Data Tools under Data storage and processing.

  4. Select Modify or Install to apply the change, and let the installer finish.

SSDT is installed as a Visual Studio component. SSIS, Analysis Services, and Reporting Services project support is provided through separate extensions. See Microsoft’s SSDT installation guidance.

Install the SSIS Projects extension

After SSDT is installed, add the extension that provides SSIS project templates and designers. Microsoft lists the extension as generally available for Visual Studio 2022.

  1. Open Visual Studio 2022.

  2. Choose Extensions > Manage Extensions.

  3. Search for SQL Server Integration Services Projects, select the matching extension, and choose Download or Install, as shown in your Visual Studio version.

  4. Close Visual Studio when prompted so the extension installer can finish. Reopen Visual Studio afterward.

You can also obtain the extension from the Visual Studio Marketplace. Microsoft’s guidance on Visual Studio 2022 project support confirms the SSIS Projects extension is generally available (Port, migrate, and upgrade projects in Visual Studio 2022).

Create an SSIS project to verify the installation

  1. In Visual Studio, select File > New > Project.

  2. Search for Integration Services Project or select it under Business Intelligence.

  3. Enter a project name and choose its location, then select OK.

A successful setup opens an Integration Services project with an empty package by default. If the template does not appear, see the troubleshooting section below. Microsoft’s walkthrough is Step 1: Create a new Integration Services project.

Set the target SQL Server version

Before building or deploying packages, set the project’s TargetServerVersion to the SQL Server version where the packages are intended to run. This helps the project use the compatibility target appropriate for that server. Microsoft’s project and solution guidance covers this setting: Integration Services (SSIS) Projects and Solutions.

Install the SSIS runtime if you need to execute packages locally

The Visual Studio extension is for authoring and design. If this computer must execute packages, run SQL Server Setup and select Integration Services under Shared Features. Selecting only Database Engine Services does not install the complete SSIS runtime; it may add limited SSIS components used by tools such as the Import and Export Wizard. SQL Server Express does not include SSIS.

When to install Database Engine Services too

You do not need a local Database Engine merely to develop packages. Install Database Engine Services if you need a local SQL Server database for the SSIS Catalog (SSISDB), or for local package-management and scheduling scenarios that depend on SQL Server Agent. For catalog-based management, execution, and monitoring, SSISDB is hosted by the Database Engine. An execution machine can instead use a separate SQL Server that provides the engine and catalog. Microsoft’s SSIS installation documentation explains the runtime and optional Database Engine components.

Optional connector considerations

Most users can complete the basic installation without extra connectors. If your packages use Oracle or Teradata and target a SQL Server version earlier than 2019, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance notes that the matching legacy Attunity connector may be required. The same guide says the Power Query Source for SQL Server 2017–2022 is excluded from the SSIS Projects extension starting with version 3.3; check the guide for applicable component details before building a package that depends on it.
