To install the “SAB tool” on Windows, download SABnzbd from its official site and choose the Windows Installer for the conventional setup. The official download page displayed SABnzbd 5.1.3 as stable and 5.2.0 Beta2 as a prerelease when checked on October 7, 2026; check the page for current labels before downloading. A Windows Portable ZIP is also available if you want the program and its settings kept in one folder.
This guide is formatted as a web document you can print or save as a PDF using your browser’s Print command. The official pages consulted describe Windows packages but do not provide a Windows 10 edition-by-edition compatibility matrix.
Download the Windows installer from SABnzbd
- Open the official SABnzbd downloads page.
- Choose the Windows Installer under the stable release. The page showed 5.1.3 as stable on October 7, 2026; release labels can change, so verify the current stable version there.
- Unless you specifically want to test prerelease software, avoid the beta listing. The same page showed 5.2.0 Beta2 as a prerelease on that date.
SABnzbd is free, open-source software. SABnzbd’s quick-setup guide recommends the installer executable for Windows: Quick setup.
Install and complete first-time setup
- Run the installer you downloaded from the official site and follow its prompts.
- During setup, choose whether to launch SABnzbd when you log in, associate
.nzbfiles with it, and create a desktop shortcut. These are optional choices. - Start SABnzbd after installation. Its first launch opens a quick-start wizard to help with initial setup. Follow the wizard’s prompts; the available setup documentation does not establish additional screen-by-screen instructions here.
Choose the installer or portable version

Install the portable package
- On the official downloads page, select the Windows Portable ZIP.
- Extract it to a folder where your Windows account can write files. SABnzbd’s portable guide says, “You don’t need to install anything on the PC.”
- Open the extracted folder and run
portable.cmdto launch SABnzbd.
The portable version keeps its settings in the SABnzbd folder, so choose a location where those files can be saved. If you encounter access problems, firewall configuration may be needed for SABnzbd’s network communications; the portable guide does not specify a particular firewall rule.

Use the official download and check Windows compatibility
Download the installer or portable ZIP from SABnzbd’s official site rather than an unfamiliar download mirror. Microsoft advises: “You should download and install programs only from trusted publishers and retail websites.” Read Microsoft’s guidance on installing programs from online sources.
The official pages cited here explain the Windows installation routes but do not state which Windows 10 editions or configurations are supported, or specify a minimum Windows 10 version. If you need a definitive compatibility answer for a particular PC, check SABnzbd’s current requirements or ask its support community before installing.

Can I install SABnzbd by running its source code on Windows?
That is intended for people testing the latest GitHub copy or modifying the code, not the ordinary installation route. SABnzbd’s Windows source-install guide says running the source Python files on Windows is not recommended unless you want to try the latest GitHub copy or make changes yourself. That source route calls for Python 3.10 or higher and Git for Windows; those requirements are not asserted for the packaged Windows installer.
