For a current Windows 11 installation, use Apache NetBeans 30 and a supported Java Development Kit (JDK). The official Apache distribution is a platform-independent ZIP file named netbeans-30-bin.zip; Apache does not provide a Windows .exe installer for this release.

You can either extract the official ZIP yourself or use a Windows installer listed on the NetBeans download page. The latter packages are supplied by NetBeans committers as a convenience, not released by the Apache Software Foundation. This guide covers both options, with the official ZIP method first.

Before installing NetBeans on Windows 11

NetBeans is an IDE, not a Java runtime. Install a JDK before starting the IDE unless you choose a third-party NetBeans package that includes its own local Temurin JDK.

NetBeans 30 officially supports running on JDK 21, JDK 25, or JDK 26. Apache recommends the latest update release of one of those versions. For a new installation, do not select a random older JDK simply because it is installed on the computer.

The JDK that runs NetBeans and the JDK used by a project are separate settings. For example, NetBeans can run on JDK 21 while a project targets another configured Java platform, provided that platform is installed and supported by the project.

1. Install a supported JDK

  1. Download a Windows x64 build of JDK 21, 25, or 26 from a reputable OpenJDK distributor.
  2. Run the JDK installer and accept the default installation location unless your organization requires another location.
  3. Open Command Prompt and check the installation by running java -version and javac -version.

Both commands should identify a JDK version. If javac is not recognized, Windows may have only a Java runtime on its PATH, or the JDK’s bin directory may not be configured. NetBeans can often locate an installed JDK itself, but correcting the JDK installation before opening the IDE avoids configuration problems.

2. Download the official NetBeans 30 ZIP

  1. Open the Apache NetBeans 30 download page.
  2. Download netbeans-30-bin.zip for the platform-independent distribution.
  3. Optionally download the corresponding .sha512 file. Download the .asc signature as well if you intend to perform PGP verification.

Older NetBeans releases are still available, but Apache lists them as unsupported. Avoid guides that tell you to install NetBeans 8.2 as the normal Windows 11 procedure.

3. Verify the ZIP file on Windows

Verification is especially useful when a large download was interrupted or when software is being installed on a managed or production computer.

SHA-512 verification with certUtil

  1. Put the ZIP and its Apache .sha512 file in the same folder.
  2. Open Command Prompt.
  3. Run the following command, replacing the example path with the actual file location: certutil -hashfile “C:\path\to\netbeans-30-bin.zip” SHA512.

Compare the SHA-512 value printed by certUtil with the value in Apache’s .sha512 file. Do not continue if the values differ; download the file again from an Apache mirror.

Optional PGP verification

Apache also documents signature verification. After obtaining the Apache signing keys and the matching signature file, run gpg –import KEYS, followed by gpg –verify downloaded_file.asc downloaded_file.

A valid signature confirms that the file was signed by a key trusted through the Apache key process. A hash check confirms the file contents match the published digest; PGP provides the stronger authenticity check when the keys are correctly validated.

4. Extract and start NetBeans

  1. Right-click netbeans-30-bin.zip in File Explorer.
  2. Select Extract All.
  3. Choose a permanent location, such as C:\Program Files\Apache NetBeans or a user-writable development folder.
  4. Open the extracted folder, then open its bin directory.
  5. Double-click netbeans64.exe on a normal 64-bit Windows installation.

The ZIP distribution is the official Apache installation method. It does not use a Windows wizard with Next, Install, and Finish buttons. If you see those buttons, you are using a third-party installer or an installer from an older distribution, not the current official Apache ZIP procedure.

If Windows SmartScreen appears, confirm that you obtained the package from the official NetBeans download page and that its checksum or signature is valid before allowing it to run.

Using a Windows installer instead

The NetBeans 30 download page lists Windows installer packages supplied by NetBeans committers. These can be more convenient because the listed Codelerity packages include a local Temurin JDK for running the IDE.

Remember the distinction:

  • They are available through the NetBeans download page.
  • They are not Apache Software Foundation releases.
  • The bundled JDK is used to run NetBeans; it does not automatically become the JDK target for every Java project.

If your organization requires software supplied directly by Apache, use netbeans-30-bin.zip and install the JDK separately.

5. Select or register the JDK used by NetBeans

NetBeans must have access to a supported JDK for its own runtime. If it does not find the correct JDK automatically, start it with the appropriate JDK or use the IDE’s Java-platform configuration.

NetBeans documentation has traditionally exposed Java platform management at Tools > Java Platforms. The documented process is to choose Add Platform, select Java Standard Edition, browse to the JDK directory, and finish the wizard. That menu path comes from older NetBeans documentation, so wording or placement may differ in NetBeans 30.

For a JDK installed in a conventional location, the directory may look similar to C:\Program Files\Java\jdk-21.

Select the JDK folder itself, not its bin subfolder. If NetBeans refuses the folder, verify that it contains bin\java.exe and bin\javac.exe.

6. Create a Java project

  1. In NetBeans, select File > New Project.
  2. In the project wizard, select Java Application.
  3. Click Next.
  4. Enter a project name and choose a location.
  5. Select the intended Java platform and source level if those options are available.
  6. Complete the wizard and run the project using the IDE’s Run command.

Apache’s Java quick-start tutorial documents this menu path, but the tutorial was last reviewed in 2019. Treat its exact labels as a general orientation rather than a guaranteed description of every NetBeans 30 screen.

Some older NetBeans tutorials say that the first Java project may prompt you to download and enable Java support. That behavior is documented for the older tutorial and should not be assumed to occur on every NetBeans 30 installation. If Java project templates are missing, check that the Java-related NetBeans modules are installed and that a valid JDK is configured.

7. Confirm that the project uses the intended Java version

After creating the project, inspect its project properties and select the required Java platform or source level. The exact property names depend on the project type, such as Ant, Maven, or Gradle.

For Maven and Gradle projects, also check the build configuration. A project can compile with a different JDK from the one that launches NetBeans, and the build tool may use JAVA_HOME or its own configured toolchain. If the IDE shows one Java version but a terminal build reports another, compare the output of java -version with the JAVA_HOME environment variable. In Windows PowerShell, check it with $env:JAVA_HOME.

Common Windows 11 problems

Problem Likely cause What to try
NetBeans will not start Unsupported or incorrectly selected runtime JDK Run it with the latest update of JDK 21, 25, or 26 and check the NetBeans startup configuration.
javac is not recognized A JRE is installed, or the JDK is missing from the command path Install a full JDK and check the JDK’s bin directory and JAVA_HOME.
Java Application is missing Java support is not installed or enabled Check installed NetBeans modules and register a valid JDK.
The project compiles with the wrong Java version Project platform, build tool, and IDE runtime are different settings Set the project JDK/source level and inspect Maven or Gradle toolchain settings.
Problems occur over Remote Desktop Known Windows/JDK behavior during RDP sessions Run NetBeans on the latest JDK 21, Apache’s stated workaround.
A project on a network share behaves strangely UNC-path issues on Windows Use a local working copy where possible; Apache also recommends the latest JDK 21 as the workaround.

Windows ARM computers

Windows on ARM is not currently a fully supported NetBeans platform. NetBeans may run through compatibility or emulation layers, but you should expect more risk than on a supported Windows x64 installation and test the complete IDE, JDK, debugger, and build-tool combination before adopting it for regular work.

Important Java-language compatibility note

Some search results claim that current NetBeans supports Java String Templates. That information is outdated: Apache states that NetBeans 23 and later no longer support String Templates. Do not choose a NetBeans version based on those older claims.

Keeping NetBeans current

Apache releases NetBeans four times per year, according to its download page. Check the official download page for a newer supported release rather than relying on an old installer copied from another website. Before upgrading, back up important projects, note your installed plugins, and keep the previous NetBeans directory until the new installation has opened your projects successfully.

FAQ

Is there an official Apache NetBeans 30 EXE installer for Windows 11?

No. Apache’s official NetBeans 30 binary is the platform-independent netbeans-30-bin.zip archive. Windows installers listed on the page are third-party convenience packages supplied by NetBeans committers, not Apache Software Foundation releases.

Which JDK should I install for NetBeans 30?

Use the latest update release of JDK 21, JDK 25, or JDK 26. These are the runtime versions specified on the NetBeans 30 release page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can NetBeans run on one JDK while my project uses another?

Yes. The JDK that launches NetBeans is separate from the Java platform selected by an individual project. Configure the project’s platform and build tool independently.

Can I install NetBeans 8.2 on Windows 11 instead?

It may be possible, but it is not the current recommended path. Apache identifies NetBeans 30 as the current release and says older releases are no longer supported.

How do I verify the NetBeans ZIP on Windows?

Run certutil -hashfile “C:\path\to\netbeans-30-bin.zip” SHA512 and compare the result with Apache’s matching .sha512 file. You can also use Apache’s documented GPG verification process.

Does NetBeans 30 fully support Windows ARM?

No. Windows/ARM is not currently a fully supported platform, so test it carefully or use a supported Windows x64 environment.

The Bottom Line

Install a supported JDK 21, 25, or 26, download netbeans-30-bin.zip from Apache, verify it if required, extract it, and launch NetBeans from the extracted bin folder. Configure the project’s Java platform separately from the JDK used to run the IDE. If you prefer a one-click Windows setup, the download page’s committer-supplied packages are available, but they should not be described as official Apache Windows installers.
