Installing mods in Minecraft depends on three things: you must own Minecraft: Java Edition, install the loader required by the mod, and use a mod file that matches your Minecraft version. Java .jar mods do not work in Bedrock Edition. Bedrock uses add-ons such as .mcpack and .mcaddon files instead.
This guide covers manual installation with the official Minecraft Launcher, Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quilt, and the CurseForge App. It also explains where to put mod files and how to fix the most common crashes.
Before installing: confirm your edition and mod requirements
Look at the Minecraft title screen. Java Edition displays “Minecraft: Java Edition” beneath the logo. Bedrock displays “Minecraft” and includes a Marketplace tab.
If you have Bedrock Edition, do not download Java mod .jar files. They will not load. Use Bedrock add-ons instead.

For Java Edition, check the mod’s download page before installing anything. Every mod must match:
| Requirement | What to check |
|---|---|
| Minecraft version | For example, 1.20.1, 1.21.8, or 1.21.11. A mod for one patch may not work on another. |
| Mod loader | Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt. |
| Edition | The mod must specifically support Java Edition. |
| Dependencies | Libraries such as Fabric API, GeckoLib, Cloth Config, or Quilted Fabric API. |
Do not assume that a Forge mod works with NeoForge, or that a Fabric mod works with Quilt. Likewise, a mod that works on Minecraft 1.21.8 may fail on 1.21.11. Download mods from a source you trust, such as Modrinth or CurseForge.
Choose a Minecraft mod loader
A mod loader creates the profile that Minecraft uses to load mods. Choose the loader shown on the mod’s download page.
- Fabric: commonly used for lightweight mods, performance tools, and many current projects. Most Fabric mods also require the separate Fabric API mod.
- Forge: a long-established loader with a large library of mods and modpacks.
- NeoForge: a modern continuation of Forge. Many developers targeting Minecraft 1.20.2 and later use NeoForge, but Forge and NeoForge mods are not automatically interchangeable.
- Quilt: a Fabric-compatible ecosystem with its own loader and projects. Quilt mods may require Quilted Fabric API.
You normally install the loader once for each Minecraft version and then put compatible mod files in that loader’s instance folder.

Windows
- Close Minecraft and the Minecraft Launcher.
- Open the official Fabric installer page and click Download for Windows.
- Run the downloaded Windows installer.
- Choose the Minecraft version required by your mods.
- Make sure Create Profile is selected, then click Install.
- Open the Minecraft Launcher. Select the new Fabric profile from the version dropdown and click Play.
The Fabric Windows .exe installer uses Java bundled with the official Minecraft Launcher. You do not normally need to install Java separately for this step.
macOS or Linux
- Download the Universal .jar Fabric installer from the official Fabric website.
- Run the installer. If your system does not open
.jarfiles, install a compatible Java runtime first or launch the installer from a terminal. - Select the required Minecraft version.
- Enable Create Profile and click Install.
- Open the Minecraft Launcher and select the Fabric profile.
The installer creates a Fabric profile; it does not install the actual mods or Fabric API. Those are added separately.
Install Forge manually
- Visit the official Forge website and select the exact Minecraft version required by the mod.
- Click Installer. On the advertising page, wait for the download option and click Skip in the top-right corner.
- Run the downloaded Forge
.jarinstaller. - Select Install Client, verify the Minecraft game directory, and click OK.
- Open the Minecraft Launcher and select Installations → New Installation.
- In the Version dropdown, select the Forge profile for the required Minecraft version.
- Click Install, then launch that Forge profile with Play.
If the installer opens in WinRAR or another archive manager instead of Java, the .jar file association is likely incorrect. The Forge installation guide recommends using Jarfix to restore the Java association. A Forge installation that loaded correctly will normally show a Mods button on Minecraft’s main menu.
Install NeoForge manually
- Open the Minecraft Launcher and run the target Minecraft version once. This creates the required game files and directories.
- Go to the official NeoForge website and find NeoForge installer files.
- Select the Minecraft version and matching NeoForge version.
- Click Click Here to Download Installer.
- Run the downloaded installer.
- Select Install Client and verify the Minecraft game directory.
- Click Install.
- Restart the Minecraft Launcher and select the NeoForge profile.
The NeoForge installer creates a launcher profile automatically. Depending on your launcher version or guide, the profile may appear under Installations or a similarly named Configuration area. If it is missing, close the launcher, rerun the installer, and restart the launcher again.

Install Quilt manually
- Download the Quilt Installer (Client) from the official Quilt website.
- Run the installer.
- Choose the Minecraft version and Quilt loader version required by the mod.
- Click Install.
- Launch the new Quilt profile once, then close Minecraft.
- Download the Quilt mod files and any required version of Quilted Fabric API.
- Place those
.jarfiles in the appropriatemodsfolder.
Find the Minecraft Java mods folder
Close Minecraft before changing the contents of the folder. Use the path for your operating system:
| Operating system | Default mods folder |
|---|---|
| Windows | %appdata%.minecraftmods |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods |
| Linux | ~/.minecraft/mods |
On Windows, press Win + R, enter %appdata%.minecraft, and press Enter. Create a folder named exactly mods if it does not already exist.
On macOS, open Finder, select Go → Go to Folder, and enter:
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft
On Linux, open your file manager and browse to ~/.minecraft. Hidden folders may need to be enabled first.
Put Minecraft mods in the folder
- Download the mod’s
.jarfile from Modrinth, CurseForge, or another trusted project page. - Check that the file supports your Minecraft version and loader.
- Read the project page for required dependencies.
- Copy the mod
.jarand all required dependency.jarfiles into the same loader instance’smodsfolder. - Start the Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt profile—not the vanilla profile.
Do not put the download page’s ZIP archive, an installer, screenshots, or extracted class files in the folder. In the normal setup, Minecraft needs the mod’s .jar file. Some projects distribute a ZIP containing several files; follow that project’s own installation instructions rather than blindly copying the ZIP.
For Fabric, remember that Fabric Loader and Fabric API are different things. The loader creates the profile, while Fabric API is a separate mod required by most, but not all, Fabric mods.
Install mods with the CurseForge App
The CurseForge App is useful when you want separate instances for different modpacks or Minecraft versions. Each profile has its own folder, so unrelated profiles do not share one default mods directory.
- Install the CurseForge App and link it to your Minecraft installation.
- Select Minecraft in the left sidebar.
- Click Create.
- Set the Profile Name, Minecraft Version, Game Type, and Modloader Version.
- For Game Type, choose the loader required by the mod, such as Forge.
- Click Create. CurseForge installs the loader and creates the profile.
- Open the profile’s Mods tab and click Add Content.
- Find a compatible mod and click Install.
- Return to My Modpacks, select the profile, and click Play.
For NeoForge, select Minecraft, choose Standard (Recommended) for the modding folder when prompted, and click + Create or Create Modpack. In Create Profile, set Modloader to NeoForge, choose the Minecraft and modloader versions, name the profile, and click Create.

Inside a NeoForge profile, use the three-dot menu beside Play and choose Add Content to install mods. Choose Open Folder if you want to copy .jar files manually.
Check Java requirements
For manual installations, Minecraft 1.18 and later requires Java 17 or later. The official launcher and CurseForge App commonly manage the required Java runtime for you, but standalone installers may still depend on the Java installation configured on your computer.
On Windows, check the installed version as follows:
- Press Win + R.
- Type
cmdand press Enter. - Run:
java -version
If the command is not recognized, Java is not installed or is not available in the system PATH. If the output shows an incompatible version, install or select the Java version required by your Minecraft release.

Fix Minecraft mods that do not work
Minecraft crashes immediately
Check .minecraftlogslatest.log on Windows, or the equivalent game-directory log on macOS or Linux. Search for Caused by, the name of a mod, Mixin, or a dependency message.
The usual causes are:
- The mod targets a different Minecraft patch.
- The mod requires another loader.
- A dependency such as Fabric API, GeckoLib, Cloth Config, or QSL is missing.
- Two mods conflict.
- The Java version is incompatible.
- A graphics driver is causing the crash.
Remove the mod named in the error, install its correct dependency, or replace it with the build matching your Minecraft version. If the cause is unclear, remove recently added mods and add them back one at a time.
Mods do not appear in the game
Verify all of the following:
- You launched the loader profile rather than vanilla Minecraft.
- The file is a
.jar, not a ZIP archive or installer. - The file is inside the correct instance’s
modsfolder. - The folder is named exactly
mods. - The mod supports the selected Minecraft version and loader.
- You installed every dependency listed on the project page.
With manual profiles, it is easy to place a mod in the default .minecraftmods folder while the launcher profile uses a different game directory. Open the profile’s settings in the launcher and confirm its game-directory path.
Missing dependency or Mixin error
Read the mod’s dependency list and download each required library for the same Minecraft version and loader. Put those dependency files in the same instance folder as the main mod. A missing library commonly produces a dependency error or a Mixin crash during startup.

OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space
This means Minecraft ran out of allocated heap memory. In CurseForge, open the profile settings and increase its allocated RAM, then check whether a mod or modpack is unusually memory-heavy. Do not allocate all system RAM to Minecraft; leave enough memory for Windows or your other applications.
JNI error
A JNI error usually indicates a corrupted or mismatched Java installation. Reinstall or update Java and confirm that the launcher or installer is using the intended version.
Forge installer will not open
Java may be missing, the .jar file association may be broken, or antivirus software may be interfering. Confirm Java with java -version, restore the association with Jarfix if necessary, and download the installer again from the official Forge site.
NeoForge profile is missing
Close the Minecraft Launcher, run the NeoForge installer again, verify the game directory, and restart the launcher. The profile should be created by the installer.
NeoForge crashes around options.txt
Duplicate or corrupted configuration files can prevent NeoForge from starting. Back up the relevant Minecraft instance, then remove or rename the problematic options.txt file so Minecraft can create a clean one on the next launch.
GPU or DLL crash
Update your graphics driver. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, rolling back to the previous driver can also help.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep separate modpacks from interfering
Different profiles in the official launcher are not necessarily isolated. If they use the default .minecraft directory, they may still share the same mods, configuration, saves, and resource-pack files. A Fabric profile and a Forge profile can therefore interfere with one another if you manually mix their files.
For reliable separation, assign each manual installation its own game directory in the launcher’s installation settings, or use a profile manager such as CurseForge. CurseForge profiles use separate instance folders automatically.

What a successful installation looks like
When the installation is correct:
- The selected loader profile starts without a dependency or version error.
- The loader’s main-menu indicator or mod list is visible. Forge normally displays a Mods button.
- The installed mod appears in the loader’s mod list or its in-game settings.
- The game reaches the title screen and can load a test world.
Test new mods in a backup world first. A mod can load successfully and still change world data, recipes, saves, or configuration files in ways that make later removal unsafe.
FAQ
Can I install Java mods on Minecraft Bedrock Edition?
No. Java .jar mods require Minecraft: Java Edition. Bedrock Edition uses add-ons such as .mcpack and .mcaddon files.
Do I need Java to install Fabric on Windows?
Not normally. The Fabric Windows .exe installer uses Java bundled with the official Minecraft Launcher. Separate Java requirements can still matter for other manual installers.
Can I use a Forge mod with NeoForge?
Not automatically. Forge and NeoForge are different loaders. Use the mod build explicitly marked for your loader and Minecraft version.
Where do Minecraft Java mod files go?
Use %appdata%.minecraftmods on Windows, ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods on macOS, and ~/.minecraft/mods on Linux. A profile manager may use a separate instance folder instead.
Why does Minecraft say a dependency is missing?
The mod requires another library or API. Download the required dependency—for example Fabric API, GeckoLib, Cloth Config, or Quilted Fabric API—for the same loader and Minecraft version, then place it in the same instance’s mods folder.
Should I always install the newest version of Minecraft?
No. Install the Minecraft version supported by the mod. A project may target an older release such as 1.16.5 or 1.20.1, and its files may not work on the newest release.
The Bottom Line
To install a Minecraft Java mod, identify the mod’s Minecraft version and loader, install the matching Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt profile, copy the compatible .jar file and its dependencies into the correct mods folder, and launch that loader profile. If the game crashes, start with the version, loader, dependency list, Java version, and latest.log.
