To install MobaXterm, download the stable Home Edition installer from Mobatek’s official download page, run it, follow the prompts, and open MobaXterm from Windows. If you want to run the program without a conventional installation, choose the portable edition instead.
Choose installer or portable edition
For a standard setup on your Windows computer, choose the Home Edition installer. Choose the portable edition if you prefer a self-contained executable in a folder or on removable storage. Mobatek describes the portable edition as running without installation or administrator privileges; a USB drive is optional, not required. The official page lists both formats: MobaXterm Home Edition downloads.
Download and install MobaXterm
- Open the official download page. Go to Mobatek’s Home Edition page and select the stable installer edition. Downloading MobaXterm means accepting the terms and conditions stated on that page.
- Run the downloaded installer. Follow the instructions displayed by the installer. The exact screens and options may vary; Mobatek’s download page confirms the installer edition but does not specify a universal wizard sequence.
- Launch the application. When the installer finishes, open MobaXterm from Windows.
Run the portable edition instead
If you selected portable edition, open its executable from the folder where you saved it. It does not require a conventional installation or administrator privileges, according to Mobatek’s documentation.
MobaXterm stores configuration and session settings in MobaXterm.ini. The documented location is MyDocumentsMobaXterm for the installed edition and the program folder for portable edition. Some versions use %AppData%MobaXterm, so treat these locations as guidance rather than a guarantee for every release. Mobatek’s documentation also describes setting a persistent home directory for files such as SSH keys.

Open MobaXterm and create a remote session
Installing the application does not connect it to a remote computer. You need the server address, account details, authentication method, and network access for the system you want to reach.
- Open MobaXterm and select Sessions.
- Choose the session type appropriate for the remote service. Documented options include SSH, Telnet, RDP, VNC, XDMCP, FTP, SFTP, Mosh, and Serial.
- Enter the connection settings and credentials supplied by your administrator, then start the session.
For SSH connections, Mobatek documents an accompanying graphical SFTP browser. Consult the official documentation if you need details about session setup or persistent storage.

Which version should you download?
At the time of the current official listings, the stable Home Edition is version 26.5, available as installer and portable editions. Mobatek’s changelog dates version 26.5 to September 11, 2026: Home Edition download page.
A separate 26.6 Preview 1 listing is dated October 6, 2026. Mobatek says preview versions are for testing, not production use. For ordinary use, choose the stable release unless you specifically intend to test a preview: preview release information.

Home Edition and workplace use
Mobatek labels Home Edition free and offers it in portable and installer formats: download page. The license page says an individual may use Home Edition in a commercial or company environment if that individual downloads and installs it. It disallows company redistribution or deployment and shared company installations; those uses are covered by Professional Edition. If you are setting up MobaXterm for work, check your organization’s policy and the current license terms.

Useful first-run settings
- If characters display incorrectly, Mobatek documents selecting UTF-8 under Settings and the Terminal tab.
- Terminal settings also include options to append Windows PATH and enable right-click paste.
- Optional plugins are not needed for basic installation. If you use one, Mobatek says to put the downloaded plugin in the same directory as the MobaXterm executable: official plugins page.
