You can install KOReader on a jailbroken Kindle, but the right package and launch method depend on your exact Kindle model and variant, firmware version, and jailbreak method. Confirm those details first; the official KOReader instructions assume the Kindle is already jailbroken, required post-jailbreak steps are complete, OTA updates are blocked, and temporary OTA filler files have been removed.
Before you install KOReader
Record your Kindle’s exact model or variant, firmware version, and the jailbreak method you used. Jailbreak eligibility and installation steps vary by those details, so this guide is not a universal jailbreak procedure. For modern devices, check current KindleModding homebrew instructions as well as the KOReader installation guide.
- Complete any post-jailbreak steps required by your specific jailbreak.
- Block OTA updates as directed for that jailbreak, and remove temporary OTA filler files.
- Do not proceed on the assumption that every jailbroken Kindle uses the same archive or launcher.
Which KOReader version should I download for my Kindle?
KOReader’s Kindle guide divides downloads into compatibility families. These labels are not interchangeable model names: check both your firmware and device before choosing an archive.
| Package family | Applicability stated by KOReader | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| KindleHF | Kindle firmware 5.16.3 and above | Confirm the firmware threshold and exact device compatibility. |
| PW2 | Listed touchscreen devices from Paperwhite 2 onward running firmware through 5.16.2 | This is a specific older firmware branch; do not assume newer firmware uses it. |
| Kindle | Kindle 4, Kindle Touch, and original Paperwhite | Verify the model label, especially for Paperwhite generations. |
| Legacy | Physical-keyboard Kindle families and variants | Some minor features may be unavailable on non-touch devices. |
The KOReader project’s guide, edited August 28, 2026, provides these family divisions. Follow its device-specific instructions if your model or firmware does not fit a category clearly.

How do I install KOReader with KPM?
Use KPM only if your jailbreak flow supports it. The KOReader guide describes this as an experimental route for supported recent jailbreak flows that bundle KPM.
- Enable Wi-Fi on the Kindle.
- In the Kindle search bar, enter
;kpm updateand run it. - Enter
;kpm upgradeand run it. - Enter
;kpm install koreaderand run it. - When installation completes, tap the newly created KOReader document or book to launch it.
If KPM is not available in your jailbreak workflow, use the matching manual route instead of trying to force this sequence.

How do I install KOReader manually?
The manual process has two parts: copy the correct KOReader package to the Kindle, then install the launcher specified for your jailbreak history and firmware. KOReader’s guide documents scriptlet, Booklet, KUALA, and legacy KUAL routes; select the one its device-specific instructions assign to your setup.
- Download the matching Kindle package family from the KOReader installation guide.
- Connect the Kindle to a computer and open the Kindle USB drive.
- Copy the full package contents to the USB root. The
koreaderandextensionsfolders should be at the root, not nested inside an extra folder. - Install or copy the launcher using the instructions for your jailbreak method and firmware. Do not assume KUAL is required: KindleModding describes KUAL as obsolete in its current homebrew workflow, though KOReader’s device-specific instructions retain legacy KUAL routes where applicable.
- Eject the Kindle cleanly, then open the newly installed launcher item to start KOReader.
A compatible data-capable USB cable is useful only if you need it for this manual file transfer; it is not needed for the KPM route or if you already have a transfer setup.

Do I need KUAL to install KOReader?
No—not as a default requirement. The available launcher depends on the Kindle’s firmware and jailbreak history. Current KindleModding homebrew guidance centers on KPM and scriptlets and says KUAL is obsolete in that workflow. KOReader’s guide still documents KUAL-related paths for certain older or compatibility-specific setups, so follow the route specified for your own device rather than installing KUAL automatically.
Why won’t KOReader launch on my Kindle?
Check the points that most often make an installation route incompatible:

- Wrong archive: Recheck the exact Kindle model and firmware against KOReader’s package-family guidance.
- Wrong launcher: Confirm that the launcher route matches the jailbreak method and firmware, rather than assuming KPM, a scriptlet, Booklet, KUALA, or KUAL works on every device.
- Incomplete file copy: For manual installation, ensure the full package contents were copied and that
koreaderandextensionsare directly in the USB root. - Jailbreak setup incomplete: Verify that required post-jailbreak steps were completed and OTA updates blocked.
KOReader also warns against switching the Kindle into USB mass-storage mode while KOReader is running; that state is unsupported and risks crashes. Exit KOReader before connecting for mass storage.
