The key to a library appearing correctly is choosing the right library type and ensuring the Jellyfin service can read the folders. You do not need Docker: native installation is available for Windows and macOS, while Jellyfin recommends containers for Linux distributions outside its Debian/Ubuntu installation route.
Choose a server and installation method
Jellyfin is a free software media system for organizing and streaming personal media. You can install it directly on a supported operating system or run it in a container. Choose based on the operating system you have and whether you are comfortable managing container mounts and persistent data.
- Debian or Ubuntu: Use Jellyfin’s official Linux installation instructions. They provide a script-based route and a manual repository setup. If using the script, download its checksum and verify the script before running it. Follow the current instructions on the Jellyfin Linux installation page.
- Other Linux distributions: Jellyfin recommends the container route. See the official container installation guide for the current image and configuration details.
- Windows or macOS: Install Jellyfin natively. The official container guide does not support container deployments on non-Linux hosts and notes known broken features, including hardware-accelerated transcoding.
If you are choosing a dedicated host, base the decision on your expected streams, client codec support, and whether Jellyfin will need to transcode video. Jellyfin’s hardware recommendations include an SSD for the operating system, Jellyfin files, and transcoding cache; media can be stored separately, including on network storage, provided its sequential access speed exceeds the media bitrate. The project recommends Gigabit Ethernet or faster, at least 20 Mbps upload for remote use, and 8GB RAM for an average deployment; it says a Linux server without a graphical interface may work with 4GB. These are project recommendations, not universal minimum requirements or independent benchmark results. Its low-power recommendations include Intel 12th-generation-or-newer N-series platforms, and its integrated-graphics recommendations name Intel N100. Start Jellyfin and open its local web interface
After installation, start the Jellyfin server service or application. From a device on the same home network, open a browser and enter the server’s IP address followed by port 8096. For example, if the server is at 10.0.0.2, use http://10.0.0.2:8096. Port 8096/TCP is the default HTTP port. The address uses the server’s local IP, not the IP address of the device you are browsing from. Jellyfin’s networking documentation explains the default ports and access options.

Complete the first-run setup wizard
- Open the local web address and follow the setup wizard.
- Create an administrator account and use a strong password.
- When prompted to add a library, choose a content type and display name, then add the folder path or paths containing that media. If a folder does not appear in the picker, enter its path manually.
- Choose the preferred metadata language and region. You can customize these settings for individual libraries later.
- Finish the wizard. You can skip adding libraries during setup and create them later in the server settings.

Choose library types and organize your media
Use separate libraries for Movies, Shows, and Music when those categories match your collection. Jellyfin says these types have the best support in client apps. A single library can include multiple folder paths, which is useful if a collection is spread across drives. The project currently discourages Mixed libraries because metadata results can be unreliable. See the Jellyfin Libraries documentation for supported library types and organization guidance.

When you add a library, point Jellyfin to the directory that contains the relevant files. The directory’s name or location does not grant access by itself: the server process must be able to read the files under it. If Jellyfin scans a folder but does not show the expected items, check both the library type and the folder permissions or container mount.
Fix a media folder Jellyfin cannot see
Jellyfin reads files as the operating-system account running its server process. A folder visible to your personal login may still be inaccessible to that service account.

- Windows service: Jellyfin recommends running the service as Network Service and giving it read and execute permissions on the media folders. Modify permission is only needed for actions such as deleting media from Jellyfin or writing subtitle and
.nfofiles into the media folders. See the Windows Service documentation. - Container deployment: Bind-mount the host’s media directory into the container so Jellyfin can access it at a path inside the container. Persist the container’s
/configand/cachepaths separately from the media mount; otherwise, server settings or cache data may not survive container replacement as intended. Consult the container guide for the current deployment details. - Any installation: Confirm that the path entered in Jellyfin is the path the server can access, not merely a path shown on another computer or under a different user account.
Decide whether to enable access outside your home
Local playback and remote access are separate decisions. Jellyfin’s default HTTP port is 8096/TCP; 8920/TCP is used for HTTPS when enabled, and 7359/UDP supports local client discovery. Automatic port mapping relies on UPnP, which Jellyfin advises disabling unless you specifically need it.
Jellyfin does not recommend exposing its ports directly to the public internet. For remote access, consider a VPN or a reverse proxy instead, and configure it deliberately. If your total upload speed is below 100 Mbps, Jellyfin’s hardware guidance recommends setting a server bandwidth limit to 70% of upload speed to reduce interference with other internet use. The recommendation is from Jellyfin, not a measured guarantee for every household. Refer to the official networking documentation before changing router or firewall settings.

Back up the server before making changes
Jellyfin documents a built-in backup and restore facility as well as platform-specific locations for server data. For a manual copy of the data or configuration, stop the Jellyfin server first: copying while the database is active can leave the backup locked and unrecoverable. Follow the Backup and Restore documentation for the supported backup process and platform-specific paths.
