To install Brew—Homebrew, historically called Linuxbrew on Linux—on Ubuntu 24.04 or 22.04 LTS, first install Ubuntu’s compiler and development prerequisites, then use Homebrew’s current official installation instructions. Run the installer as the account that will own Homebrew, and follow the shell setup steps it prints before using brew.
How do I install Brew on Ubuntu 24.04 or 22.04 LTS?
Homebrew’s Linux documentation gives this Debian/Ubuntu command for the prerequisites:
sudo apt-get install build-essential procps curl file gitThese packages provide the development tools Homebrew expects, including a working system C compiler. Homebrew may install its own newer GCC when needed, but that does not replace the system compiler required for bootstrap and post-install tasks. See Homebrew on Linux for the current requirements.
- Install the prerequisites. Open a terminal, run the APT command above, and complete any prompts.
- Run the current supported installer. Follow the Linux installation link from Homebrew’s official documentation. Use the command shown on the live instructions rather than an old copied installer command.
- Follow the installer’s printed next steps. On Linux, Homebrew’s default prefix is
/home/linuxbrew/.linuxbrew. The installer prints the shell setup commands appropriate to your installation. - Check the installation. After configuring your shell, try
brew install helloas a first package. Runbrew doctorif Homebrew reports a problem.
Configure Bash or zsh to find brew
Homebrew will not work in a shell that has not loaded its environment. The Linux documentation shows this command for the current terminal session and Bash configuration:

If zsh is your login shell, use ~/.zshrc instead of ~/.bashrc. Prefer the exact commands printed by your installer, particularly if you chose a non-default prefix.
Ubuntu 24.04 vs. 22.04: what Homebrew support means
Both releases are listed in Homebrew’s Linux CI documentation, but they do not have the same published glibc version or support tier. Homebrew identifies Ubuntu 24.04 as the current homebrew/core bottling base. Its support tier also depends on the machine and installation details—not just the Ubuntu release.

These figures and the base designation come from Homebrew’s Linux CI documentation; the tier ranges come from its support-tier policy. Homebrew says its own glibc formula is installed automatically for Linux systems in the 2.13–2.38 range. So Ubuntu 22.04’s listed glibc falls in Tier 2, while Ubuntu 24.04’s listed glibc meets the Tier 1 version floor. Neither statement guarantees that every formula behaves identically on every machine.
Homebrew’s Tier 1 Linux conditions also include a supported architecture—ARM64/AArch64 or Intel x86_64 with SSSE3—a kernel version of 3.2 or newer, a supported Linux distribution, the default or a compatible custom prefix, and use of bottles rather than building official packages from source. Run Homebrew as its owning account
The default Linux prefix, /home/linuxbrew/.linuxbrew, is intended to let Homebrew install packages without routinely writing to system-owned directories. Homebrew describes the installation as belonging to one owning account; that can be a dedicated account, but the account managing Homebrew must have write access to the installation. After initial setup, formula installation normally does not require sudo. Some casks and system services can still require elevated privileges.
A bottle is a precompiled Homebrew package. Not every formula and system combination has an applicable bottle: Homebrew may build from source if you request a source build, no suitable bottle exists, bottle relocation fails, or formula options require a source build. Homebrew’s Linux documentation also notes that an older distribution may receive recent Homebrew-provided glibc and GCC when its first package is installed; this does not remove the system-compiler prerequisite for bootstrap and post-install work. Troubleshoot a failed or missing brew command
- “command not found: brew”: the shell environment may not be loaded. Run the
brew shellenvcommand printed by the installer, then check that it is in the startup file for your shell. - Permission errors: confirm you are using the intended owning account and that it has write access to the Homebrew prefix. Avoid making routine formula installs with
sudo. - Build or compiler errors: confirm the Ubuntu prerequisites were installed and that the system has a working compiler. Use
brew doctorto identify common configuration issues. - A package builds from source: a suitable bottle may not be available, or the requested options or installation conditions may require a source build.
