Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The key is to distinguish loading a font for the current session from installing it so it remains available. A script that calls AddFontResourceEx only loads font resources temporarily; a persistent system-wide install requires copying the font into %windir%fonts and registering it. For a one-off install on Windows 10 or 11, the simplest supported route is usually to right-click a .ttf or .otf file and choose Install or Install for all users.
Choose the right kind of font installation
The right method depends on how long the font must remain available, who needs to use it, and what permissions the script has. These are different operations, even though each may be described casually as “installing a font.”
| Method | Scope and persistence | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
Right-click a .ttf or .otf file and choose Install |
Windows’ standard user workflow; Microsoft’s Windows 10/11 guidance also lists Install for all users. | Use this for a straightforward interactive install. See Microsoft’s Manage Fonts in Windows instructions. |
Call AddFontResource or AddFontResourceEx |
Loads font resources for the current session; the load alone does not survive a reboot. | Notify top-level windows with WM_FONTCHANGE and remove resources loaded by the application when finished. See Microsoft’s font installation and deletion guidance and AddFontResourceExW reference. |
Copy to %windir%fonts and register the font |
Microsoft documents this as a persistent, system-level route. | Writing to the Windows fonts directory and the machine Fonts registry key requires appropriate rights. Copying the file without completing registration should not be treated as a reliable immediate install. |
Why a font API call is not a permanent install
AddFontResource and AddFontResourceEx add font resources for use during the current session. They do not, by themselves, create the registry-backed installation that makes a font persist across reboots. A script using these APIs should describe its action as loading a font, not installing one permanently.
AddFontResourceEx returns the number of fonts added, or zero if it fails; the function does not provide extended error information. Its flags change visibility, not persistence: FR_PRIVATE limits use to the calling process, while FR_NOT_ENUM prevents enumeration. Neither flag makes a font installation durable.

When an application adds or deletes font resources, Microsoft says it should send WM_FONTCHANGE to top-level windows so other applications can respond to the change. An application should also remove font resources it loaded when it no longer needs them. These API behaviors apply whether the call is made from a program or exposed to a script through an appropriate Windows API mechanism.
For a persistent scripted install, use the system-level route carefully
Microsoft’s documented permanent system-font approach uses the Windows fonts directory and the Fonts registry key at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionFonts. In practical terms, a deployment must place the font file in the system fonts directory and register it using the appropriate display name. The registry name is font metadata, not necessarily the file’s exact filename, so do not assume the two are interchangeable.

- Check the execution context. A machine-wide write requires rights to modify the protected Windows directory and the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINEkey. An interactive user script and a device-management agent may run with different permissions and visibility. - Do not equate copying with immediate availability. Microsoft notes that copying a font into the fonts directory makes it available after reboot. Active applications, registry state, and session behavior can affect when a change becomes visible.
- Consider multi-session systems. In terminal-server environments, other sessions may not see some font changes until reboot.
- Validate the font and registration. Confirm that the target file is the intended font and that its registered display name corresponds to its font metadata. A script that assumes a filename-derived registry name can create an incomplete or misleading installation.
The Microsoft documentation describes the required Windows mechanisms, but it does not establish one complete VBScript or PowerShell script as validated across every Windows build, privilege context, and deployment system. Choose implementation details for the actual target environment and test there; do not treat a generic API-loading snippet as a machine-wide persistent installer.
When to use VBScript or PowerShell
The scripting language does not change the underlying distinction. Either language can coordinate file handling and system changes, but the operation’s scope comes from the Windows method used and the security context in which the script runs.

- Need a temporary font for an application session? Use the font-resource API approach, handle its return value, broadcast
WM_FONTCHANGE, and remove the resource when appropriate. - Need a simple install on one Windows 10 or 11 PC? Prefer the built-in right-click workflow documented by Microsoft rather than writing a custom installer.
- Need a persistent font for the machine or managed devices? Use the system directory and registry-backed route only with suitable administrative rights, and validate the deployment context and visibility behavior.
Keep font files trusted and properly licensed
Only install font files from sources whose trustworthiness and licensing you have checked. Microsoft’s untrusted-font guidance recommends installing a problematic font as the remediation rather than weakening protection by excluding an application.
A font file’s presence on one PC does not establish permission to copy it to other machines or bundle it with a script. Check the font’s redistribution terms before deploying it; Microsoft’s font redistribution FAQ explains the licensing considerations.
