Update DirectX through Windows Update
Microsoft says DirectX 11.3 and DirectX 12 are included with Windows 11 and that updates are available through Windows Update; there is no standalone package for these versions.
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart if Windows requests it.
Do not download a file advertised as a standalone DirectX 12 installer for Windows 11. Microsoft does not offer one for this purpose.
Check the DirectX version Windows reports
- Open Start and type dxdiag.
- Launch DxDiag from the search results.
- On the System tab, find DirectX Version under System Information.

If a game still has a DirectX error
A DirectX version shown in DxDiag does not establish that a particular game will run on your PC. Check the game’s requirements and consult its official publisher support for the exact error and a Windows 11-specific remedy.
In particular, a missing legacy file or component is a different issue from installing DirectX 12. Do not assume that a separate legacy runtime is an upgrade or a universal fix for Windows 11 game errors.

DirectX 12 and the DirectX End-User Runtime
Microsoft describes the DirectX End-User Runtime in connection with DirectX 9.0c on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Microsoft says that package does not change the installed DirectX version or the Direct3D 9, 10, or 11 components. It is not a way to install or upgrade DirectX 12 on Windows 11.
If a game reports a missing component, follow the game’s publisher’s support guidance rather than treating the DirectX End-User Runtime as a Windows 11 DirectX 12 installer.
