CurseForge for Linux is distributed in two formats: an AppImage and a Debian package (.deb). The official download page labels the Linux download but does not show a Linux version number. Official support is aimed at Ubuntu distributions and their recognized official derivatives, so Fedora, Arch, Debian, and Linux Mint should not be treated as officially supported unless they qualify under CurseForge’s stated Ubuntu-derivative scope.
This guide covers both installation methods, browser integration, Minecraft setup, game detection, updates, troubleshooting, and complete removal.
Before installing CurseForge on Linux
- Use an Ubuntu distribution or an official Ubuntu derivative where possible.
- Download CurseForge only from the official CurseForge download page.
- Choose either Download for Linux as an AppImage or the Debian package (.deb).
- Do not assume that every game listed on the CurseForge website is supported by the Linux app.
CurseForge’s Linux documentation currently limits app support to Minecraft: Java Edition and World of Warcraft. A separate Getting Started page, modified later, also lists Hytale. Because these official pages conflict, Hytale support should be considered subject to change rather than guaranteed.
Download CurseForge for Linux
- Open the official CurseForge download page.
- Find the Linux section.
- Click Download for Linux.
- Save the downloaded file, normally in your Downloads folder.
The download page does not currently display a Linux version number in its rendered page. That is not a problem during installation; use the current file supplied by the official page rather than relying on version numbers from third-party guides.

Method 1: Install the AppImage
An AppImage is a self-contained application file. CurseForge’s current Linux support instructions identify AppImage as a supported format, but they do not provide an official terminal installation command.
- Open your file manager and go to Downloads.
- Locate the CurseForge AppImage you downloaded.
- Open its file properties and enable the option equivalent to Allow executing the file as a program or Is executable.
- Close the properties window, then double-click the AppImage.
- Choose Run if your desktop asks whether to execute the file.
The exact wording of the executable-permission option varies between Ubuntu desktop environments. If double-clicking opens the file as an archive or does nothing, check its permissions rather than downloading a second copy.
Enable website-to-app links for the AppImage
Launching the AppImage directly does not automatically register the browser links used by CurseForge. This matters when you visit a mod page, click Install, and then click Open: the browser needs to hand that request to the desktop app.
CurseForge documents AppImageLauncher as the helper for this integration. Install AppImageLauncher using the instructions for your Ubuntu-based system, then launch the CurseForge AppImage again. AppImageLauncher can place the application under Home/Applications and register it with the desktop environment.

Method 2: Install the Debian package
Choose the .deb download if you are using a compatible Ubuntu-based system and prefer an ordinary Debian package installation.
- Open the Downloads folder.
- Double-click the CurseForge .deb file.
- Your system’s software installer should open.
- Click the install button and authenticate if Ubuntu requests your password.
- After installation completes, open the application from the desktop application menu and search for CurseForge.
CurseForge’s current support material identifies the .deb and AppImage formats but does not document an official apt, dpkg, or other shell command for installation. For that reason, this guide uses the graphical installer rather than presenting a community command as an official CurseForge procedure.
Set up Minecraft in CurseForge
Minecraft does not have to be installed in advance for CurseForge to create its dedicated modding environment. After opening the app:

- 5. User Guide & Support: Print user guide and support available. please contact us for help if you have an issue.
- Select Minecraft.
- When prompted for the modding folder, choose Standard (Recommended) or Advanced.
- With the Standard option on Linux, the default folder is /home/[user]/Documents/curseforge/minecraft.
- Choose Advanced if you want the modding files stored somewhere else.
This dedicated installation keeps CurseForge profiles and modded instances separate from a regular Minecraft installation. The exact folder can be changed later from the Minecraft settings.
Choose the Minecraft launcher
CurseForge’s Minecraft settings provide several launcher choices:
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Classic/Mojang launcher | Uses the traditional external Minecraft launcher. |
| Microsoft Store launcher | Uses the Microsoft Store version where available. |
| Use CurseForge launcher | Skips the external launcher. It exposes a Log in button and requires a Microsoft/Minecraft account. |
Select the option that matches the launcher and account arrangement you already use. If the CurseForge launcher option asks for credentials, use the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft.
Add another supported game
CurseForge can look for an installed game or let you select its installation directory manually.
Scan the computer
- Open Settings.
- Click the + button.
- Choose Scan computer for games.
- Wait for the scan to finish and review the reported results.
Add a game manually
- Open Settings.
- Click +.
- Choose Manually add a game.
- Browse to the game’s installation directory.
- Select the game’s main folder.
These options are for games supported by the Linux app. Other projects may still be available on the CurseForge website, but they may require downloading files directly instead of managing them through the Linux desktop app.
Find and install mods
From inside the app
- Open the supported game in CurseForge.
- Use Discover to find unfamiliar mods.
- Use Browse when you want filters such as categories or game versions.
- Search by mod name with the search field.
- Open the mod and choose its installation option.
From the CurseForge website
- Open a supported mod page on CurseForge.
- Click Install.
- Click Open when the browser asks to launch CurseForge.
- Allow the app to complete the installation.
This website workflow depends on browser-to-app deep links. If it fails after a direct AppImage launch, install and configure AppImageLauncher as described above.
Configure automatic updates
CurseForge has two relevant update settings:
- For update-check frequency, open Settings > Addons > Updates.
- For automatic installation in a particular game, choose the game and enable Auto Install Updates.
Be careful with automatic mod updates on established Minecraft profiles. A newer mod can require a different game version, loader, or dependency and may make an otherwise working profile fail to launch.
Troubleshoot common Linux problems
The AppImage will not launch
Check that the file has execute permission in its properties and that you are running the file you downloaded from CurseForge. If your desktop still refuses to launch it, consult the AppImage or Ubuntu documentation for your desktop environment. CurseForge’s official Linux instructions do not prescribe a universal shell command for this step.

The website’s Install button does not open the app
This is expected when the AppImage was launched directly without registering deep links. Install AppImageLauncher, then try the Install → Open sequence again.
A game is not detected
Run Settings > + > Scan computer for games. If scanning does not find it, use Settings > + > Manually add a game and select the game’s main installation folder—not a parent folder containing several unrelated games.
The Debian package will not uninstall
CurseForge documents this workaround for a failed .deb removal:
sed -i.bak ‘s/\r$//’ /var/lib/dpkg/info/curseforge.postrm
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
After running that command, repeat the normal graphical uninstall procedure.
Send logs to support
- Click the ? icon in the app menu.
- Select Create logs zip.
- CurseForge opens the desktop folder and highlights the generated log archive.
Attach that archive when reporting a reproducible problem.

Remove an AppImage installation
If AppImageLauncher placed CurseForge in Home/Applications, right-click the CurseForge icon and select Move to trash.
If you launched the AppImage directly, delete the downloaded AppImage from Downloads. Deleting the file removes the application launcher, but it does not necessarily remove CurseForge’s profiles, mods, or other application data.

- Open the original .deb file, normally still in Downloads.
- Click the trash icon in the package window.
- Click Uninstall.
If this fails, apply the documented sed workaround above and repeat the uninstall.
Delete CurseForge data and installed content
Uninstalling the application alone does not remove installed mods or content. To remove everything created by CurseForge:
- Open your home folder.
- Press Ctrl+H to show hidden files.
- Open .config.
- Delete the CurseForge folder.
Do this only after backing up profiles, worlds, resource packs, or mods that you may want to keep.
FAQ
Is CurseForge officially supported on Linux?
Yes, but the official support scope is Ubuntu distributions and recognized official Ubuntu derivatives. CurseForge does not promise support for arbitrary Fedora, Arch, Debian, or Linux Mint installations unless they qualify under that scope.

Which Linux package should I choose: AppImage or .deb?
Both AppImage and Debian package (.deb) are identified as supported formats. The AppImage is portable but needs AppImageLauncher for reliable browser-to-app deep links. The .deb uses the system’s graphical package installer and uninstaller.
Does CurseForge for Linux support every game on the website?
No. The Linux troubleshooting documentation currently lists Minecraft: Java Edition and World of Warcraft. Another official Getting Started page also lists Hytale, but the documentation is inconsistent. Other CurseForge games may require direct website downloads.
Can I install CurseForge with apt or dpkg?
CurseForge’s current official Linux instructions identify the AppImage and .deb formats but do not document an official apt, dpkg, chmod, or other terminal installation command. Use the graphical installation method unless you are following separate, clearly unofficial community instructions.
Why does clicking Install on the CurseForge website do nothing?
A directly launched AppImage does not register the browser-to-app deep links by default. CurseForge documents AppImageLauncher as the solution. Install it, register the AppImage, and retry the Install then Open workflow.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhere does CurseForge store the default Minecraft modding folder?
With the Standard (Recommended) setup, the Linux default is /home/[user]/Documents/curseforge/minecraft. The Advanced option lets you select another location.
The Bottom Line
Download CurseForge from the official page, choose the AppImage or .deb package, and use the graphical installation path. AppImage users should add AppImageLauncher if they want website Install links to open the app. For Minecraft, CurseForge creates its own modding folder, while complete removal requires deleting the hidden ~/.config/CurseForge folder separately.
