Do not install v1.3 for ordinary gameplay. The Community Patch setup guide recommends starting from an original game disc or mounted ISO, running installers as administrator, and launching the game with runblack.exe after configuring the fan patch’s Setup.exe. Mods are different: check each download’s own instructions because there is no single install method for every mod.
What you need before installing
- An original Black & White game disc or a mounted ISO. If you have the disc but no built-in optical drive, an external USB DVD drive is one possible way to access it; the setup guide does not recommend or test a particular model.
- Administrator access on Windows. The Community guide recommends installing the game on the C: drive to avoid common setup problems; it presents this as a recommendation, not a universal requirement.
- A backup of your save files and any game files you plan to replace when adding a mod.
Follow the current Black & White Community Windows setup guide if its instructions have changed since this article was checked on October 4, 2026.
Install the game and patches on Windows 10 or 11
1. Install from the original disc or mounted ISO
- Run the game installer as administrator and install the game. The Community guide recommends using the C: drive.
- When installation finishes, choose not to launch the game yet.
2. Apply patches in the recommended order
- Run the official Patch v1.1 installer as administrator.
- Run the official Patch v1.2 installer as administrator.
- Run the unofficial Community Patch v1.42 installer as administrator.
The Community setup guide says the game will not launch without the unofficial patch. Do not add official Patch v1.3 to this ordinary gameplay sequence: the guide says it is not a gameplay patch. The openblack documentation says v1.3 adds P5 Power Glove support and is generally unstable.
3. Restore audio and configure graphics
- If the soundtrack is missing, copy the disc’s
Audiofolder into the game’s installation folder. Merge folders if Windows prompts you. - In the game folder, run the fan patch’s
Setup.exeto choose a resolution and set graphics quality to Maximum Detail. - Set
runblack.exeto run as administrator, then launch the game using that file.
The Community guide advises against using Windows Compatibility mode.

If a previous installation failed
The Community guide suggests removing the failed installation before starting over: uninstall the game, delete its leftover directory, and remove the registry keys listed in the guide. Registry edits can remove configuration, so only do this when you can identify the exact game installation and the listed keys. Do not delete registry entries based on a guess; consult the guide’s cleanup instructions and make sure they match your installation.
How to find and install mods
The Black & White Community downloads archive separates Black & White 1 resources into patches, addons, maps, mods/apps/tools, and skins. It also lists resources related to Creature Isle and Battle of the Gods. Examples include “Black and White Creature Isle Definitive Edition,” described as a mod expansion and listed with a September 18, 2024 update, and “Black & White Plus,” described as a small improvement mod and listed with an August 9, 2024 update. Those dates are archive listing dates, not proof that either item has been tested on every current Windows configuration.

There is no universal installation procedure for everything in the archive. Open the specific resource page and check its requirements, version notes, and installation directions before applying it. Back up saves and relevant game files before replacing or modifying them. The available project documentation does not establish a standard mod manager for all Black & White mods.
Advanced option: patching the executable yourself
The openblack bw1-patches project offers a command-line alternative for technically experienced users. It requires Rust 1.86 or newer, builds the bw1patch tool, and applies selected binary patches to an unprotected runblack.exe, producing a patched copy. The project says the game normally ships packed with SecuROM; extracting an unprotected executable is outside its scope. It points users who want a ready-made build to the Community’s unofficial patch instead. Back up the executable before any in-place operation.

The tool documents fixes involving windowed mode, texture and detail settings, landscape draw distance, official add-ons on newer Windows versions, secret creatures, saves redirected to Documents, and widescreen presentation. Resolutions above 2048 pixels use a separate proxy DLL documented by the project; that component is not applied by the command-line patcher. This route gives more control over individual fixes but is not needed for the standard community installer workflow.

The openblack project documentation describes installing the original game through Wine on Linux or macOS, applying official patches 1.10 and 1.2, and optionally installing unofficial patch 1.42. It notes that the unofficial installer needs .NET 2.0 under Wine, and that openblack uses the original installation’s Audio, Data, and Scripts folders. These are requirements for that project, not a promise that every conventional game mod will work there. The Community setup guide says the original Mac port runs only on older PowerPC Macs and is incompatible with modern hardware.
