You can install AsteroidOS on some discontinued Wear OS watches, but there is no universal smartwatch flashing process. First confirm your exact model and codename on the project’s device list, then use that model’s own instructions. You will generally need an unlockable bootloader, a computer, and a USB cable that transfers data. Back up anything you want to keep: unlocking may erase watch data, and replacing the original OS can make it difficult or impossible to restore without a backup.
Is your watch supported?
Start with AsteroidOS’s watch list. Support is specific to the exact model, not simply the brand or the fact that a watch runs Wear OS. The list distinguishes supported devices from experimental ones; the project does not recommend experimental watches for daily use.
Record the full model number and codename, then open the corresponding device instructions. Similar product names can refer to different hardware: AsteroidOS’s OPPO Watch instructions, for example, explicitly identify the OPPO Watch Free and OPPO Watch X as unsupported. Device procedures, images, and partition layouts are not interchangeable.
If you are choosing a used watch, verify the exact model and support level before buying. AsteroidOS notes that most supported watches are no longer produced and suggests looking at used markets. Check battery condition as well: a degraded battery will still limit runtime after installing a new operating system.

What to check before installation
- Device-specific prerequisites: Read the full instructions for your model, including listed hardware features, image variants, and any steps required in the original operating system.
- Bootloader: The watch must allow the bootloader to be unlocked. Unlocking may erase data and may affect warranty coverage. AsteroidOS’s OPPO Watch guide cautions: “Unlocking the bootloader may void your warranty.”
- USB data connection: Use a cable and watch connector or charging cradle that can transfer files. A charging-only cable will not work.
- Computer tools: Install and use ADB and Fastboot as directed by your device’s guide. Do not assume commands or images from another model apply.
- Backup and recovery: Back up wanted data and locate the device guide’s recovery instructions before making changes. The project warns that restoring the previous OS may not be possible without a prior backup.
Some steps apply only to particular watches. For example, the OPPO Watch guide says to complete Wear OS setup and let its health UI record steps before installing if step counting is important. Treat that as an OPPO-specific prerequisite, not a general AsteroidOS step.
How to install AsteroidOS on an old Wear OS watch
- Identify the watch. Find its exact model number and codename, then match both against the AsteroidOS watch list.
- Open its device guide. Follow the model-specific instructions linked from the project. Confirm the support status, prerequisites, image variant, original-OS setup requirements, and recovery steps.
- Prepare the connection and computer. Set up ADB and Fastboot as specified in the guide. Connect the watch with a compatible, data-capable cable and maintain a stable USB connection.
- Back up and review the consequences. Save anything you need and understand that unlocking can wipe user data. Do not proceed if the bootloader cannot be unlocked or if you cannot accept the recovery risks.
- Follow only the matching instructions. Use the commands and image intended for your exact model and variant. If the device guide offers a temporary installation, consider using it to try AsteroidOS before permanently replacing the existing system.
- Keep the guide available during troubleshooting. Follow its recovery advice if flashing fails. The OPPO guide, for instance, calls out checking image variants, keeping USB stable, and cleaning corroded contacts.
Installing the operating system is different from installing an app. If you mean adding an app after AsteroidOS is already running, consult the project’s current user documentation for that separate task; the initial watch-flashing steps do not install individual apps.

What if your watch is not listed?
Do not try another watch’s image or treat a similar model as compatible. Porting AsteroidOS to an unsupported device is a separate development project, not a routine installation. The project’s porting guide describes requirements that include an unlockable bootloader, a USB data path, and kernel source. Its port status page records unsuccessful efforts and hardware constraints. A watch running Wear OS alone does not establish that it can run AsteroidOS.
Can you go back to the original operating system?
Do not count on being able to restore the previous OS after a permanent installation. AsteroidOS’s OPPO Watch guide describes temporary installation as a way to test the system before replacing the original OS and warns that restoration may not be possible without a backup. Preserve a suitable backup before installing, and do not relock the bootloader while AsteroidOS is installed on the OPPO Watch.

Where to verify current instructions
Compatibility and installation directions are model-specific and can change. Check the live watch list and the guide for your exact device immediately before proceeding. The project’s AsteroidOS site is the starting point for its documentation and installer; do not rely on old steps or an image intended for a different watch.
