Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThere are two very different ways to “install Android” on a BlackBerry Passport: add an Android app while keeping BlackBerry 10, or replace BlackBerry 10 with a community build of LineageOS 18.1. The first is an APK installation through File Manager; the second involves removing and rewriting the phone’s eMMC storage and is advanced board-level work, not a routine USB ROM flash.
Choose between Android apps and a full Android replacement
| Route | What changes | Main requirements | Main limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Install APKs in BB10 | Add individual Android apps while keeping BlackBerry 10 | An APK file and File Manager | Third-party APK security risks; apps that rely on unsupported services may not work fully. BlackBerry Passport user guide |
| Convert to LineageOS 18.1 | Replace BB10 with a community Android-based operating system | A supported Passport variant, eMMC programming and chip-off board work, fastboot, recovery, and the ROM | Advanced hardware procedure; data formatting, boot-protection and permanent-bricking risks. Conversion guide; community research repository |
Installing an APK does not turn the Passport into an Android device. A full conversion is a separate, much riskier project.
Install an Android app while keeping BlackBerry 10
The Passport user guide says to open a downloaded APK in File Manager to install it. Use this route only if you want to try an individual app without replacing the phone’s operating system.
- Obtain the APK you intend to install.
- Open the APK in File Manager and follow the installation prompts.
- Test the app’s essential features rather than assuming that a successful installation means full compatibility.
BlackBerry warns that apps obtained outside BlackBerry World may not have been reviewed by BlackBerry and may put the device or personal data at risk. The Passport documentation also cautions that some apps depend on services BlackBerry 10 does not support; an app may install but still fail or work only partially. See the Passport user guide.

What a full LineageOS conversion involves
A community-maintained Passport Conversion guide describes replacing BB10 with LineageOS 18.1. It explicitly warns, “This project isn’t begginner friendly!” That is the project’s wording; it is not an official BlackBerry procedure or a validated repair manual.
The guide’s high-level workflow is:
- Collect the listed platform tools, imggen utility, LineageOS recovery image, and ROM.
- Remove the logic board and desolder the eMMC storage chip.
- Back up the boot0 and user physical partitions, then generate modified images.
- Program the modified images to the eMMC and set the boot partition.
- Resolder the chip and reinstall the board.
- Boot into fastboot, flash recovery, then factory-reset and format data.
- Use ADB recovery to sideload the LineageOS 18.1 ROM.
This overview is not a substitute for the project’s current instructions. It shows why the conversion cannot be treated as an ordinary flash performed over USB: it requires chip-level storage work and specialized equipment, and the documented reset erases data.

Check these risks before attempting conversion
- Exact revision and variant: The conversion guide says V5 and newer Passports are supported and describes SE and AT&T variants as guaranteed to work. These are the project maintainer’s claims, not an official guarantee for every device. Verify your own model and revision against the guide before obtaining files.
- Board-level capability: The documented method calls for logic-board removal, eMMC desoldering, programming, and resoldering. If you do not have the right equipment and microsoldering skills, this is not a suitable do-it-yourself USB-only procedure.
- Backups and recovery: The guide instructs users to back up boot0 and user physical partitions before writing images. A community reverse-engineering repository describes hardware write protection on Passport boot partitions and reports unresolved recovery failures in that project’s device work as of September 2026. That status applies to that research effort; it does not establish the state of every device or community project. See the repository.
- Potential permanent failure: The community repository warns that changes to boot partitions can permanently brick a phone. A backup is not a guarantee that a failed modification can be recovered.
- Data loss: The conversion flow formats data. Preserve anything you need before proceeding and do not use a device whose loss would be unacceptable.
- Current files and instructions: Check the conversion guide directly for its latest supported variants and downloads. The instructions and files can change; their integrity and the process have not been independently verified here.
What BlackBerry 10’s end-of-life dates do—and do not—mean
BlackBerry’s support table lists BlackBerry 10.3.x end of development as August 2018 and end of life as December 2019. Its end-of-life FAQ discusses effects on services used by BlackBerry 10 devices. Those dates do not, by themselves, prove that every handset or network function stopped working on the same day.
For apps kept within BB10, the Passport guide’s documented caveats are app compatibility and unsupported services. For a complete replacement, the project’s chip-off procedure, variant claims, boot protections, data formatting, and uncertain recovery path are the central practical constraints.

Does Android fix a Passport network problem?
Do not assume that it does. A Passport owner’s forum question asked whether Android might “fix the network problem,” but that is one user’s question, not evidence that conversion resolves network issues. Replies distinguish installing Play Store-related files from replacing BB10 with Android; neither establishes a network fix.
A separate project site titled “Android on Passport” displayed “COMING SOON” and did not provide a working installation guide when accessed. The concrete conversion instructions described above are in the community-maintained Passport Conversion guide.
