You can run Android apps on some SteamOS handhelds using Waydroid, a Linux-based Android container. On Steam Deck, a community-maintained installer adds SteamOS-specific setup and can add a launcher to Game Mode. This is an unofficial, version-sensitive setup—not a Valve feature—and support for the Deck installer does not establish support for every SteamOS handheld.
Before you install: check your device and SteamOS version
The SteamOS Android Waydroid Installer is aimed at Steam Deck. Its documentation and a separate community bundle describe compatibility in terms of specific SteamOS builds or target configurations, so check the current project guidance for your exact handheld and SteamOS version before proceeding. Do not assume that a guide for one Deck build applies to another handheld.
This is a community setup that uses Waydroid, not an Android feature supplied or supported by Valve. SteamOS updates can disrupt the installation, and important Android data should be backed up before maintenance or reinstalling.
Install Waydroid on a Steam Deck
Use the current instructions in the SteamOS Android Waydroid Installer project. The guide describes using Desktop Mode and Konsole, setting a sudo password, cloning the project repository, and running its installation script. Follow its live instructions rather than relying on copied commands: installer branches, prerequisites, and supported configurations can change.

The installer documentation describes image choices that include Android 13 variants and Android TV images. These are options documented by that project, not guarantees that every Waydroid setup supports the same images. A separate project calls Android 13 its normal supported path and describes Android 16 as experimental; check that project’s current target-specific guidance before choosing an image.
Install Android apps and choose how to launch them
Sideload an APK
After Waydroid is running, install a local APK from a terminal with the documented command form:

waydroid app install xyz.apk
Replace xyz.apk with the APK file’s name or path. Waydroid also documents using F-Droid or the Play Store when the installed image includes GAPPS (Google apps and services). A GAPPS image does not guarantee that every app or Google-dependent feature will work.
Open apps from Desktop Mode or Game Mode
Waydroid supports launching installed apps from the desktop application menu. The Deck installer also documents a Waydroid launcher entry for Steam Deck Game Mode and provides guidance for sideloading and direct Game Mode launching. Follow the installer guide for its current integration steps; this Game Mode path is specific to its Deck setup, not a general promise for all SteamOS handhelds.

Check APK compatibility before troubleshooting
An APK being available for Android does not mean it will run in Waydroid. Waydroid warns that APK files found online often support ARM only and therefore do not work on x86_64. Look for a package build that supports the device architecture, rather than repeatedly reinstalling an incompatible file.
Even a suitable architecture is not a compatibility guarantee. The reviewed project documentation does not establish broad support for apps that depend on Play Integrity, DRM, or special hardware features. Compatibility can also depend on the Android image and the handheld’s exact SteamOS configuration.

What to check when setup or an app fails
- Installer stops or reports an unsupported configuration: Recheck the current compatibility guidance for your exact device and SteamOS build. Do not force a Deck-specific installer onto another handheld based on the shared SteamOS name alone.
- An APK will not install or launch: Check whether the package supports x86_64. Then confirm that Waydroid is running and that the APK is appropriate for the Android image you selected.
- An app installs but a service or feature fails: The app may rely on Google services, DRM, integrity checks, or hardware features that the setup does not provide. Project documentation does not establish universal support for these cases.
- Waydroid breaks after a SteamOS update: The Deck installer warns that an update can wipe Waydroid and that a kernel change may require a matching Binder module before its script will work. Check the current installer guidance before rerunning it; a reinstall may be needed.
Storage: microSD is optional
The Deck installer links instructions for configuring Waydroid storage on an SD card. A microSD card is an optional storage route, not a stated installation requirement; the project documentation does not specify a required capacity or speed. Use the project’s current storage guidance if you want to configure one.
