You can install Android apps on a Chromebook through Google Play if your Chromebook supports Android apps and Play Store access is allowed. First update ChromeOS and check Settings > Apps > Manage Google Play preferences. If that setting is missing, Google says the Chromebook does not work with Android apps. Work or school policies can also block Play Store, so check with your administrator if the device is managed.
Before you start: check support and update ChromeOS
Android apps from Google Play are available on some Chromebook models, not all of them. Google recommends updating ChromeOS before setting up Play Store. Open Settings and look under Apps > Manage Google Play preferences. If the option is absent, Google says the Chromebook does not work with Android apps; updating will not add support to an unsupported model. If your Chromebook belongs to a workplace or school, ask the administrator about Play Store access before troubleshooting further. Managed-device policies may prevent adding Play Store or downloading Android apps.
How to enable Google Play and install an app
- Open the Play Store setting. In Chromebook Settings, select Apps > Manage Google Play preferences.
- Accept the terms. Follow the on-screen setup, select More when prompted, then accept the Terms of Service. Labels and screens may vary with ChromeOS updates.
- Find the app. Open Play Store from the Launcher and search for the app you want.
- Install it. Select the app, then choose Install. An app installed on your phone or tablet does not necessarily transfer automatically; download it again on the Chromebook.
Even a Chromebook that supports Play Store may not support every app. Developers can limit availability, and an app may require device features the Chromebook lacks. Google’s Play Store installation guidance explains that device compatibility affects which apps can be installed.

Troubleshoot by symptom
“Manage Google Play preferences” is missing
Google’s guidance is that if this option is missing, the Chromebook does not work with Android apps. Confirm the exact model if you are unsure which Chromebook you have; this is a device-support limitation, not a Play Store download glitch.
Play Store will not open, load, or keeps crashing
- Restart the Chromebook.
- Check that it is connected to the internet.
- Install any available ChromeOS updates.
- If Play Store still fails, try Google’s general Chromebook crash troubleshooting.
“I can’t download apps from the Play Store on my Chromebook”
For a failed download, restart the Chromebook and check the internet connection. If only one app is affected, search for it in Play Store on the Chromebook. If it does not appear, the developer may not offer or support it on Chromebooks; Google recommends contacting the developer about availability.

“Your device is not compatible with this version”
This message means the particular Chromebook model is not compatible with that app. The app may require a feature the Chromebook lacks; Google gives GPS as one example. A Chromebook’s ability to run Android apps does not guarantee compatibility with every app. See Google Play’s Chromebook download troubleshooting.
“My Chromebook is grayed out” on play.google.com
When installing from the web, check that you are signed into the intended Google account and have selected the intended device. If the Chromebook is grayed out in the device picker, Google says that app cannot be installed on that Chromebook.

A work or school Chromebook cannot enable Play Store
The organization may restrict Play Store setup or Android app downloads. Contact the administrator; local troubleshooting cannot override an administrator’s policy.
