VLC Media Player is a free Windows player that can open most video and audio formats without installing a separate codec pack. On Windows 11, the current VideoLAN download page lists VLC 3.0.23, with separate installers for 64-bit Intel/AMD PCs and ARM64 devices.

This guide covers the normal installation, opening files and discs, subtitles, playback controls, default-app settings, conversion, and practical fixes for common VLC problems.

Before installing VLC on Windows 11

Download VLC from the official VideoLAN Windows download page. Avoid unofficial download sites that bundle installers with advertising software or unwanted utilities.

Choose the package that matches your computer:

Windows device Recommended download
Most Intel- or AMD-based Windows 11 PCs Installer for 64bit version
Windows 11 on an ARM device Installer for ARM64 version
Managed business or enterprise computers MSI package, usually deployed by an administrator
Portable use without a conventional installation ZIP or 7-Zip package

The standard 64-bit download is approximately 40 MB. VLC includes its own codecs, so installing a separate codec pack is normally unnecessary.

How to install VLC Media Player in Windows 11

  1. Open the official VLC download page.
  2. Select Installer for 64bit version for a typical Windows 11 computer. Select the ARM64 installer only if Windows runs on ARM hardware.
  3. When the download finishes, open the setup file from your browser’s Downloads folder. It will usually have a name similar to vlc-3.0.23-win64.exe.
  4. If User Account Control asks whether to allow the installer to make changes, select Yes.
  5. Select the installer language and select OK.
  6. On the welcome screen, select Next.
  7. Read the license information and select Next.
  8. Review the component and shortcut selections. The default selections are suitable for most people, so select Next unless you need to change them.
  9. Accept the proposed installation folder, or select Browse to choose another location.
  10. Select Install. Select Show details if you want to see the installation progress.
  11. When the installation finishes, leave Run VLC media player selected if you want to open it immediately.
  12. Select Finish.

The normal installer creates Start-menu shortcuts and gives you the conventional Windows installation experience. ZIP and 7-Zip versions are useful for portable setups, but they do not provide the same automatic shortcut and file-association setup.

How to open VLC in Windows 11

Press the Windows key, type VLC, and select VLC media player. If the installer created the shortcut, you can also open the Start menu and select the VideoLAN folder.

To close VLC, select the window’s Close button, press Alt+F4, or select Media > Quit. The documented quit shortcut is Ctrl+Q.

How to play a video or music file

Open a file from VLC

  1. Open VLC.
  2. Select Media > Open File.
  3. Select the video or audio file.
  4. Select Open.

VLC starts playback as soon as the file opens.

Drag a file into VLC

Open File Explorer and drag a media file into VLC’s main window or playlist area. This is often quicker than browsing through the Open File dialog.

Open several files

Select Media > Open Multiple Files to build a playback list. This dialog is also useful when a video has a separate audio track. Select Show more options if you need additional playback settings, or use Play another media synchronously to pair media sources.

Understand the VLC window

The standard VLC interface includes a menu bar, video display area, playback buttons, volume controls, status information, and a playback-position slider.

For a local file, the slider shows the current position and total duration. A live network stream may not have a known end time, so the slider may not behave like a normal video progress bar.

Open a network stream

  1. Select Media > Open Network Stream.
  2. Enter the stream URL.
  3. Select Play.

The address must point to a stream VLC can access and decode. A web-page address is not necessarily a direct media-stream URL. For example, pasting the address of a video website’s page may not work because it is not the actual stream address.

Use audio tracks and output devices

When a file contains more than one language or audio mix, select Audio > Audio Track and choose the required track. Select Disable to turn the audio track off.

To send sound to a different connected device, select Audio > Audio Device, then select the available speakers, headphones, or output mode.

Use subtitles in VLC

Choose a subtitle track

When subtitles are already included in the media file, select Subtitle > Subtitle Track and choose the track. Select Disable to hide subtitles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Load an external subtitle file

  1. Start playing the video.
  2. Select Subtitle > Add Subtitle File.
  3. Select the subtitle file and select Open.

VLC supports formats including .srt, .ass, .ssa, .sub, .idx, .smi, .jss, .psb, and .utf. For VobSub subtitles, select the .idx file rather than the accompanying .sub file.

Change subtitle size or font

  1. Select Tools > Preferences.
  2. Select Subtitles/OSD.
  3. Change Font, Font size, or another subtitle-rendering option.
  4. Select Save.

Restart playback, or restart VLC, if the change does not appear immediately. Subtitles are enabled by default.

Fix subtitle timing

During playback, press G to move subtitles earlier or H to delay them. Each press changes the timing by 50 milliseconds.

Fix audio and video synchronization

If speech happens before or after the picture, use the following shortcuts while the video is playing:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Press J to move audio earlier relative to the video.

  2. Select Video > Take Snapshot.

VLC saves snapshots as PNG files by default. The usual Windows location is C:Users<username>Pictures. The current VLC tips documentation lists Shift+S as the Windows shortcut. Because some older VLC documentation lists a different shortcut, use the menu command if the shortcut does not work.

Convert a video or audio file

VLC can convert or remux media, although the result may be re-encoded and therefore may not be lossless.

  1. Select Media > Convert/Save.
  2. Select Add.
  3. Choose the source file and select Open.
  4. Select Convert/Save.
  5. Choose an output format from the Profile list.
  6. Enter the destination path and file name. Include the appropriate extension, such as .mp4 or .mp3.
  7. Select Start.

Do not close VLC while the conversion is running. The time required depends on the source format, selected profile, file length, and computer hardware.

Make VLC the default media player in Windows 11

Windows 11 changes default applications by file type or protocol. The old VLC option for globally setting “Music Player” or “Video Player” is not the current Windows 11 method.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps > Default apps.
  3. Search for a file extension such as .mp4, .mkv, or .mp3, or search for VLC media player.
  4. Select the current default application beside the file type.
  5. Select VLC media player.

Repeat these steps for each extension you want VLC to open automatically. You can also change one association from File Explorer:

  1. Right-click a media file.
  2. Select Open with > Choose another app.
  3. Select VLC media player.
  4. Enable Always use this app to open [extension] files, if shown.
  5. Select OK.

Change VLC preferences

Open Tools > Preferences. The simple settings view includes sections such as Interface, Audio, Video, Subtitles/OSD, Input / Codecs, and Hotkeys.

Select All in the lower-left area of the Preferences window to expose advanced settings. Select Save after making changes. Some settings take effect only after VLC is restarted.

  2. Open Tools > Preferences > Video.
  3. Test a different video-output configuration.
  4. Select Save and restart VLC.

Change one setting at a time so you can identify which option resolves the problem.

H.264 playback is slow or choppy

Check whether the CPU is overloaded and update the graphics driver. If the problem continues, VideoLAN’s advanced troubleshooting settings are under Tools > Preferences > Input / Codecs. Possible tests include changing Skip H.264 in-loop deblocking filter, adjusting Threads under Input / Codecs > Video codecs > FFmpeg, or increasing disc-caching values for problematic disc playback.

These changes can reduce picture quality or alter playback behavior, so restore the defaults after testing if they do not help.

VLC crashes or will not start

Corrupt preferences or plugin-cache data can stop VLC from starting.

If VLC opens, select Tools > Preferences > Reset Preferences, select Save, and restart VLC. If VLC will not open, use the Start-menu shortcut VideoLAN > Reset VLC media preferences, if available.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

As a further reset, close VLC and delete its VLC folder under %appdata%. Press Win+R, enter %appdata%, and locate the VLC folder. This removes custom VLC settings, so use it only after trying the in-app reset.

Subtitle characters are incorrect

  1. Open Tools > Preferences.
  2. Select Subtitles/OSD.
  3. Change Default encoding.
  4. Select Save and restart playback.

The correct encoding depends on how the subtitle file was created.

VLC says an AVI file is broken

The warning “The AVI file is broken. Seeking not work correctly” indicates structural problems in the file. Playback may work, but seeking can remain unreliable and other players may also have trouble.

For persistent behavior, open Tools > Preferences > Input / Codecs > Demuxers > AVI. Change Force index creation from Ask to Always fix or Never fix, then save the setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An MP4 or 3GP file has no audio

Some phone-created files use AMR audio, which may not work correctly in current stable VLC versions. This is a file- or codec-specific limitation; installing a Windows codec pack is not the normal solution.

What VLC cannot do

  • It does not need a separate codec pack for common formats.
  • It does not burn CDs, DVDs, HD DVDs, or Blu-ray discs.
  • It does not guarantee playback of every commercially copy-protected Blu-ray without extra setup.
  • A web-page URL is not automatically a usable network-stream URL.

FAQ

Is VLC free for Windows 11?

Yes. VLC Media Player is free and should be downloaded from VideoLAN’s official website. The normal Windows 11 64-bit installer is the right choice for most Intel- and AMD-based PCs.

Which VLC version should I install on Windows 11?

As of August 7, 2026, VideoLAN’s official Windows download page lists VLC 3.0.23. Select the 64-bit installer for a normal PC or the ARM64 installer for a Windows-on-ARM device.

Does VLC require a codec pack?

No. VLC includes its own codecs and normally plays common video and audio formats without an external codec pack.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I set VLC as the default player in Windows 11?

Open Settings, select Apps, select Default apps, search for an extension such as .mp4 or .mp3, select its current default app, and choose VLC media player. Repeat for each file type you want to associate.

Why is VLC showing a black screen?

Update the graphics driver, then open Tools > Preferences > Video and test another video-output configuration. Save the change and restart VLC. Hardware-decoding settings under Input / Codecs can also be tested if the problem continues.

Can VLC play Blu-ray discs?

VLC has a Media > Open Disc > Blu-ray option, but commercially released copy-protected Blu-rays may require additional files and configuration. VLC does not guarantee that every retail Blu-ray will play immediately.

Where does VLC save screenshots?

VLC saves PNG snapshots to the user’s Pictures folder by default, normally C:UsersPictures. Use Video > Take Snapshot if the keyboard shortcut is unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I reset VLC settings?

If VLC opens, use Tools > Preferences > Reset Preferences, select Save, and restart VLC. If it does not open, use VideoLAN > Reset VLC media preferences from the Start menu when that shortcut is available.

The Bottom Line

For most Windows 11 PCs, download the official 64-bit VLC installer, accept the default installation choices, and open media with Media > Open File or by dragging files into the VLC window. Use Windows 11’s Settings > Apps > Default apps page for file associations, and change VLC’s preferences only when you have a specific playback, subtitle, or output problem to solve.
