To check your Windows version, press Windows key + R, type winver, and press Enter. Slack’s system requirements list the supported Windows version.
Choose the correct Slack download
Open Slack’s official Windows download page. It currently offers these choices:

| Download on the Microsoft Store | You want installation and update management through the Store. |
| Download (ARM 64-bit) | Your Windows 11 computer uses an ARM processor. |
| Download (Legacy) | You have a system that requires Slack’s legacy build. Use the standard 64-bit download unless you have a specific compatibility reason. |
Slack’s download page currently lists the standard Windows release as version 4.51.180. Slack no longer releases a 32-bit Windows desktop app; the change began with version 4.39, according to Slack’s feature and plan retirements.

Install Slack directly from Slack’s website
- Go to slack.com/downloads/windows.
- Click Download (64-bit), or choose Download (ARM 64-bit) if your device uses ARM hardware.
- Open the downloaded installer from your browser’s Downloads list or File Explorer.
- Allow the installer to run if Windows displays a security prompt.
- Wait for Slack to finish installing. It should open automatically; if not, search for Slack in the Start menu and launch it.
Do not look for an MSI installer in current Slack instructions. Slack retired its per-user and machine-wide Windows MSI installers on September 15, 2025. Organizations that used MSI packages need to remove the old package and deploy Slack using the MSIX for Windows instead, as explained in Slack’s retirement notice.
Install Slack from the Microsoft Store
- Open Slack’s official Windows download page.
- Click Download on the Microsoft Store.
- When the Microsoft Store opens, select the option to install Slack.
- After installation, open the Start menu, search for Slack, and launch it.
The Microsoft Store and direct-download versions are separate distributions. Their update and cleanup procedures differ; Slack documents both in its desktop app update instructions.
Sign in to Slack
- Open Slack and click Sign In to Slack. Slack opens the sign-in process in your web browser.
- Enter the email address associated with your Slack account.
- Click Sign In with Email.
- Enter the confirmation code Slack sends to your email.
- Complete your organization’s single sign-on (SSO) process if prompted.
- If two-factor authentication is enabled, enter the required six-digit authentication code.
You can also select Continue with Apple or Continue with Google when those options match the account you use for Slack. See Slack’s sign-in instructions for details.
Add another workspace
- Click your workspace icon in Slack’s sidebar.
- Select Add a workspace.
- Choose Sign in to another workspace.
After adding multiple workspaces, click a workspace icon in the sidebar to switch between them.

Set up Slack after signing in
Complete your profile
- Click the default profile picture in the bottom-left corner.
- Select Profile.
- Click Edit profile.
- Update your name, photo, job title, or other available details.
- Click Save Changes.
Choose notification settings
- Click your profile picture in the bottom-left corner.
- Select Preferences.
- Click Notifications.
- Choose which activity should trigger notifications and how Windows should display them.
If Slack notifications are still missing, also check Windows notification settings under Settings > System > Notifications and make sure notifications are allowed for Slack.
Start a conversation
- Click the plus button in the sidebar.
- Choose the type of conversation you want to start.
- Type your message. You can add attachments, emoji, mentions, and formatting.
- Press Enter to send it.
To schedule a message, click the arrow beside the paper-plane send button and choose the scheduling option. A guest user can send messages only in channels they can access and can direct-message people in those channels. Press F1 in Slack to open Help.
Check which Slack version is installed
- Click the ☰ three-lines icon in Slack’s top-left corner.
- Select Help.
- Choose About Slack.
The About window shows the installed version. If it mentions Microsoft Store, you are using the Store distribution. If the version number begins with MSQ, updates are managed and deployed by your organization. Contact your IT team or Slack administrator if you cannot update. See Slack’s update instructions.
Update Slack on Windows 11
Update the direct-download version
- Open Slack.
- Click the ☰ icon in the top-left corner.
- Select Help.
- Click Check for Updates.
- When an update is ready, click Restart to Apply Update.
Slack may badge the Help icon when an update is available. Open Help and select Restart Slack from the update card.

Update the Microsoft Store version
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Click the ••• three-dots button in the top-right corner.
- Select Downloads and updates.
- If Slack appears with an available update, click Get updates.
Fix common Slack installation and update problems
Slack says it cannot check for updates
First identify the distribution in Help > About Slack. Use Slack’s in-app update path for the direct-download version and Microsoft Store for the Store version. An update can also fail if Slack is still running in the background.
- Quit Slack.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Look for Slack.exe and Update.exe.
- End either process if it is still running.
- Try the update again.
Slack still runs an old version
Older Slack desktop versions can cause connection failures and broken features. Confirm that Windows 11 meets Slack’s supported version requirement, then update Slack using the method that matches your installation. Slack recommends checking the app version and system requirements for desktop connection problems.
If the update continues to fail, perform a clean reinstall. This removes local Slack application data, so make sure you know how to sign back into your workspaces before proceeding.
Clean up the direct-download version
- Quit Slack and confirm in Task Manager that Slack.exe and Update.exe are not running.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features. Depending on your Windows build, this area may be labelled Installed apps.
- Find Slack and select Uninstall.
- Press Windows key + R, enter %AppData%, and press Enter.
- Delete the Slack folder in the location that opens.
- Open Run again, enter %LocalAppData%, and press Enter.
- Delete the Slack folder there.
- Download Slack again from slack.com/downloads/windows.
Clean up the Microsoft Store version
- Quit Slack and confirm that its processes are closed in Task Manager.
- Uninstall Slack through Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features or Installed apps.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Packages\91750D7E.Slack_8she8kybcnzg4\LocalCache\Roaming, replacing USERNAME with your Windows account name, then press Enter.
- Delete the Slack folder that opens.
- Reinstall Slack from the Microsoft Store.
Slack opens but cannot connect
Slack requires a persistent WebSocket connection over port 443. A proxy, firewall, security appliance, or restricted corporate network can interrupt it. Ask your IT team to review Slack’s required allowlist at my.slack.com/help/urls. Slack’s connection troubleshooting guidance recommends updating Slack and checking system requirements.

The sign-in email or code does not arrive
- Check that you entered the email address associated with the workspace.
- Check the spam or junk folder.
- Ask your email administrator to allow messages from @slack.com and @slack-mail.com.
- Request a new sign-in email if the previous link has expired.
- If you cannot receive a two-factor authentication code, ask a Workspace Owner or Admin whether they can temporarily disable 2FA for your account.
Support lifecycle to keep in mind
Slack reviews and updates its operating-system and app support requirements twice a year, in May and November. Slack changed this schedule from March and September in May 2025. According to Slack’s support lifecycle schedule, Windows 11 version 22H2 reached Slack end of support on May 18, 2026, and version 23H2 is scheduled to reach end of support on November 9, 2026.
When a Windows version reaches Slack end of support, an installed Slack version may continue working if that app version remains supported. However, Slack will stop providing app updates for that Windows version, and the app will no longer be available for download from the Microsoft Store. Keeping Windows 11 updated avoids being left on an increasingly outdated Slack build.
Slack Calls is no longer the current calling feature: Slack retired Slack Calls on March 30, 2023. Use Huddles for the functionality that replaced Slack Calls, as described in Slack’s retirement notice.

Should I install Slack from Slack’s website or the Microsoft Store?

Can I install a 32-bit version of Slack on Windows 11?
No current 32-bit Windows desktop build is released by Slack. Slack stopped releasing 32-bit builds beginning with desktop-app version 4.39.

What replaced Slack Calls?
