LibreOffice is a free office suite for Windows 11 that includes Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Math, and Base. It can open and edit many Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files, while using OpenDocument formats as its native file types.
The normal Windows 11 installation takes only a few minutes. The important choices are downloading the correct processor version, deciding whether LibreOffice should become the default application for Office files, and choosing whether to install offline help.
Which LibreOffice version should you install?
As of August 7, 2026, the current stable release is LibreOffice 26.2.4, released on June 5, 2026. The official download page offers three Windows builds:

LibreOffice 26.2 requires Windows 10 or newer for the x86-64 build, so it is supported on Windows 11. Download the installer from the official LibreOffice download page, rather than from a third-party download site.

Check whether your PC is x86-64 or ARM64
- Open Start > Settings > System > About.
- Under Device specifications, find System type.
- Choose the LibreOffice download matching the processor architecture shown there.
A typical 64-bit Intel or AMD Windows 11 installation needs the x86-64 installer. Do not select the 32-bit LibreOffice download simply because Windows says “64-bit operating system.”
Check the requirements
LibreOffice has modest hardware requirements. The published Windows requirements include:
- Windows 10 or Windows 11, or supported Windows Server editions
- A Pentium-compatible processor
- At least 256 MB of RAM; 512 MB is recommended
- Up to 1.5 GB of available disk space
- A display resolution of at least 1280 × 800
- Administrator rights for installation
Java is not required for normal Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, or Math use. Some features, particularly Base and certain wizards, require Java. If you need those features, install a Java version whose architecture matches LibreOffice—for example, 64-bit Java with 64-bit LibreOffice.
Download LibreOffice for Windows 11
- Open the LibreOffice download page.
- Under the Windows downloads, select Windows (64-bit) for an ordinary Intel or AMD PC, or Windows (Aarch64) for an ARM64 device.
- Download the main Windows installer.
- Optionally download the separate Help for offline use package if you need help content without an Internet connection.
The main Windows download is an MSI installer. Offline help is a separate MSI package and does not need to be installed unless you want local help content.
Install LibreOffice
- Open File Explorer and go to the folder containing the download, normally Downloads.
- Double-click the LibreOffice MSI file.
- If User Account Control asks whether to allow the installer to make changes, select Yes.
- At the welcome screen, select Next.
- At Setup Type, select Typical for the standard installation.
- Select Next.
Choose Custom instead of Typical if you need to change the installation folder, remove individual components, or select specific language resources.
Choose Custom Setup options
Custom Setup displays a component tree. You can use it to change the installation location and select optional resources such as spelling dictionaries, hyphenation rules, thesauri, and grammar checkers. Select a component and choose the option to install it on the local hard drive.
Custom Setup is also useful on a computer with limited storage, although LibreOffice’s requirements are relatively small.
Choose file associations
The installer includes a File Type page with checkboxes for Microsoft Office file types, including Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentations. These associations are not enabled by default in the documented installer flow.

Select the appropriate checkboxes if you want double-clicking a .docx, .xlsx, or .pptx file to open it in LibreOffice. Leave them clear if Microsoft Office or another application should remain the default.
Choose the shortcut and startup options

- Create a LibreOffice shortcut on the desktop.
- Load LibreOffice during Windows startup.
A desktop shortcut is optional. Startup loading is also optional and is not required to use LibreOffice.
- On the Ready to Install page, select Install.
- Approve another User Account Control prompt if Windows displays one.
- Wait for the installation to finish.
- Select Finish.
You do not normally need to uninstall an older LibreOffice version first. The official installer can overwrite an existing installation and preserve preferences. Close any LibreOffice windows before upgrading.
Install offline help
If you downloaded the optional help package, install it after the main program:
- Open the downloaded help MSI file.
- Follow the installation wizard.
- Choose the matching language and architecture where the installer provides those options.
Without the offline package, LibreOffice can still display online help when an Internet connection is available.
Open LibreOffice and choose an application
Open Start > All apps > LibreOffice. The Start Center provides shortcuts for creating or opening files.

Create and open documents
Create a new file
From an open LibreOffice application, select File > New, then choose Text Document, Spreadsheet, Presentation, Drawing, Formula, or Database.
To start from a template, select File > New > Templates.
Open an existing file
Use File > Open, select the file, and choose Open. You can also double-click an associated file in File Explorer.

If the file is not shown, use the Files of type list in the Open dialog to select the format.

Save in LibreOffice or Microsoft Office formats
LibreOffice normally saves new files in OpenDocument formats:
- Writer: .odt
- Calc: .ods
- Impress: .odp
For a new document, select File > Save As, choose a folder, enter a filename, select the required format in File type, and select Save.
To create a file for Microsoft Office users, choose the corresponding format, such as:
- Word 2007–365 (*.docx)
- Excel 2007–365 (*.xlsx)
- PowerPoint 2007–365 (*.pptx)
LibreOffice may display a format-confirmation warning when you save outside OpenDocument format. Confirm the Microsoft format if that is what you need.

- Open LibreOffice.
- Select Tools > Options.
- Expand Load/Save and select General.
- Under Default file format and ODF settings, select the document type.
- Under Always save as, choose the required Microsoft format.
- Select OK.
This changes the default format but does not remove the Save As option for individual files.
Export a document as PDF
To produce a PDF copy without changing the editable document’s format, use either:
- File > Export as PDF
- The Export Directly as PDF toolbar button
The current Writer, Calc, or Impress document remains open in its existing format. Use File > Export when you need to choose another supported export format.
Set or change default applications in Windows 11
If LibreOffice did not become the default during setup, configure individual extensions in Windows:

- Search for an extension such as .docx, .xlsx, .pptx, or .odt.
- Select the current default application.
- Choose the appropriate LibreOffice component.
For one file only, right-click it and select Open with > Choose another app. Renaming .docx to .odt does not convert the file; use File > Save As instead.
Install extensions
- Open LibreOffice.
- Select Tools > Extensions.
- Select Add to install an extension file already downloaded to the PC.
- Select Check for Updates to check installed extensions.
Some extensions download through a web browser or require manual installation. Shared extensions may require administrator rights and may not be editable while LibreOffice is running.

Update LibreOffice
To check manually, select Help > Check for Updates. If an update is available, LibreOffice can download it and start the installer when the account has permission to update the installation. Administrator rights may be needed for an installation under C:\Program Files.
To configure update checks, open Tools > Options > LibreOffice > Online Update. Available settings include:
- Check for updates automatically
- Check every day, week, or month
- Download updates automatically
- Change the download location
- Check now
The documented default checking interval is once a week.

“The cabinet file is corrupt” or Error 1335
This usually means the MSI download is incomplete or damaged. Download the installer again from LibreOffice.org. An MSI corruption message does not by itself mean that LibreOffice is incompatible with Windows 11.
Error 1303 or insufficient privileges
Error 1303 means the installer cannot access an installation directory, commonly under C:\Program Files\LibreOffice. Confirm that:
- Your Windows account has administrator rights.
- You selected Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- LibreOffice is closed.
- Security software is not blocking the installer.
Restart Windows and run the MSI again if the error continues.
Windows asks for an old LibreOffice MSI
The message “A feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable” can occur when Windows Installer needs an MSI from an older installation that was deleted or incompletely removed.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find LibreOffice and select Uninstall.
- If that fails, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features and use Uninstall or Uninstall/Change.
- If Windows still blocks installation or removal, use Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter.
Do not manually delete the LibreOffice program folder as the first fix. That can leave Windows Installer registration behind.
LibreOffice installs but will not start
Try LibreOffice’s Troubleshoot Mode:
- Open Start and search for LibreOffice (Safe Mode).
- Start the troubleshooting tool.
- Choose Continue in Troubleshoot Mode to test a temporary profile.
You can also open a command shell and run:
“C:\Program Files\LibreOffice\program\soffice.com” –safe-mode
Troubleshoot Mode uses a new user profile temporarily and disables hardware acceleration. It can identify problems caused by a damaged profile, a faulty extension, hardware acceleration, or a recent configuration change.

The dialog also provides options such as Extensions, Restore from backup, Configure, and Reset to factory settings. Resetting the complete profile is more destructive than resetting selected settings, so use it only after the less-invasive options fail.
Start a specific LibreOffice component from the command line
For the standard installation location, open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal and use:
“C:\Program Files\LibreOffice\program\soffice.com” –version
“C:\Program Files\LibreOffice\program\soffice.com” –writer
“C:\Program Files\LibreOffice\program\soffice.com” –calc
“C:\Program Files\LibreOffice\program\soffice.com” –impress
“C:\Program Files\LibreOffice\program\soffice.com” –help
Use soffice.com when you need console output. Use soffice.exe when you do not need a console interface. LibreOffice also needs write access to its user-profile directory.

Avoid formatting surprises with Office files
LibreOffice can open and save Microsoft Office formats, but OpenDocument is its native format. Layout, fonts, formulas, charts, macros, and presentation effects may not map perfectly between formats.
A safer workflow is to keep the working copy in .odt, .ods, or .odp, then use File > Save As to create a separate .docx, .xlsx, or .pptx copy. Reopen that exported copy in LibreOffice or Microsoft Office and check the important pages, formulas, charts, and slides before sending it.

Is LibreOffice free on Windows 11?
Yes. The LibreOffice Windows installer is distributed by The Document Foundation and can be downloaded from LibreOffice.org without requiring a Microsoft 365 subscription.
Do I need to uninstall an older LibreOffice version first?

Should I install the 32-bit version on Windows 11?
Normally no. Choose x86-64 for standard Intel and AMD PCs, or ARM64 for ARM-based Windows 11 devices. The Windows 32-bit build is deprecated.
Can LibreOffice save Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files?
Yes. Use Save As and select DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX. Keep an OpenDocument working copy when possible, because complex formatting and features may change between formats.
Why is a DOCX file opening in Microsoft Word instead of LibreOffice?
