You can run AnyDesk on Windows 11 without installing it, but portable mode requires someone to start it and does not stay available after sign-out or reboot. For reliable unattended access, install AnyDesk so its Global Service can run in the background.
This guide explains how to install or run AnyDesk portably, configure access securely, connect to another computer, use command-line options, troubleshoot common issues, and uninstall the app.
Choose between portable and installed AnyDesk
The Windows download is available as an executable file (.exe) and an installer package (.msi). The EXE can be run directly or installed; the MSI must be installed and cannot be used portably.

Install AnyDesk on Windows 11
Option 1: Install from the EXE
- Download the Windows EXE from AnyDesk’s official website.
- Open the downloaded executable. If Windows displays a security confirmation, verify the download source before continuing.
- In the AnyDesk window, click Install AnyDesk.
- Follow the on-screen installation instructions.
- Approve the installation if Windows requests administrator permission.
After installation, AnyDesk installs the AnyDesk Global Service. The service lets the client run in the background, remain reachable after a reboot or sign-out, start with Windows, support Remote Restart and CTRL+ALT+DEL during sessions, and create or manage an Alias.
Option 2: Install the MSI
The MSI is useful for managed deployments or administrators using Windows installation tools. It cannot be used portably.
For an interactive installation, open the MSI and follow the prompts. To specify an installation folder from a command prompt, use:
anydesk.msi INSTALL=”C:\Path\To\AnyDesk”
Run the command from the directory containing anydesk.msi, or use the MSI file’s full path.
Run AnyDesk portably without installing it
To use the portable client, open the downloaded EXE and do not select Install AnyDesk. AnyDesk can display its ID and accept a connection while it is open.
Portable mode has important limits:
- It does not start automatically with Windows.
- Remote access ends when the user closes the AnyDesk window or signs out.
- It does not provide installed-mode persistence after a reboot.
- The remote user cannot interact with Windows UAC prompts during a normal portable session.
- Remote Restart and Alias setup are unavailable.
If the portable client needs to control an elevated application or interact with UAC, right-click the executable and select Run as administrator. This allows operation outside the normal user session, including at the Windows login screen, but it must still be launched manually.
Open AnyDesk settings
- Open AnyDesk.
- Click the menu button in the upper-right corner.
- Select Settings.
Settings include categories such as Application and Security. On an installed client, changing security settings requires administrator privileges. Use the administrator control at the top of the Access section when AnyDesk requests elevation.
Set up unattended access
Unattended Access lets someone connect without a person at the Windows 11 computer to click Accept. It is disabled by default.

- Open Access.
- Under Unattended Access, click Set password.
- Enter and confirm a password.
- Save the setting.
The password must contain at least eight characters. AnyDesk recommends a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols, and more than 12 characters. Treat it like a device password: anyone with both the AnyDesk ID and password may be able to access the computer, subject to its configured permissions.

For unattended access after a reboot, use the installed client rather than the portable executable. The installed service can run before a user signs in; portable mode does not provide that persistence.
Choose how incoming requests are handled
Go to Settings > Access > Interactive Access. AnyDesk provides three choices:

Set the unattended-access password before selecting Never show incoming session requests. Otherwise, no one can approve a normal incoming request and remote access may be locked out.

Use the Access Control List in the Security/Access settings to restrict incoming connections to specified AnyDesk IDs or aliases.
The list supports wildcard characters:
- * matches any number of characters.
- ? matches one character.
For example, *@company allows aliases in the specified custom Namespace. Listing known IDs or aliases is more restrictive than allowing every incoming client.
Connect to another Windows 11 computer
- Open AnyDesk on both computers.
- On the remote computer, copy its AnyDesk ID or Alias.
- On your computer, enter that ID or Alias in the remote-address field.
- Start the connection.
- Have the remote user accept the request or enter the configured Unattended Access password.
Installed AnyDesk continues running in the background when its main window is closed. Closing the window therefore does not necessarily disconnect an installed client. In portable mode, closing the window ends active sessions and stops the client.
Install AnyDesk from the Windows command line
Open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal with the required administrator permissions. Run commands from the directory containing AnyDesk.exe, or use the executable’s full path.

A standard client is typically installed at:
C:\Program Files (x86)\AnyDesk\AnyDesk.exe
A custom client is typically installed at a path such as:
C:\Program Files (x86)\AnyDesk-<prefix>\AnyDesk-<prefix>.exe
The general installation syntax is:
anydesk.exe –install <location> <additional_parameters>
For example, this installs AnyDesk, starts it with Windows, and creates a desktop shortcut:

anydesk.exe –install “C:\Program Files (x86)\AnyDesk” –start-with-win –create-desktop-icon
Useful installation parameters include:

| –update-auto | Enables automatic updates for supported clients. |
| –update-manually | Enables manual updates. |
| –update-disabled | Disables AnyDesk updates. |
Automatic updates are the documented default for standard clients. Manual updates are the documented default for custom clients, and –update-auto is unavailable for custom clients.
Configure unattended access from Command Prompt
Replace the placeholder with the password:
echo <my_password> | anydesk.exe –set-password
To register a license key, use:
echo <license_key> | anydesk.exe –register-license
License registration requires administrator privileges.
Useful AnyDesk commands

Open a particular local settings section with:
anydesk.exe –settings:security
Documented local sections include ui, security, alias, privacy, video, capture, audio, connection, file_transfer, recording, printer, wol, license, and about. Global administrator sections use this form:
anydesk.exe –admin-settings:security
Global sections include capture, security, connection, and recording.
Start sessions from the command line
To connect to an ID or Alias:
anydesk.exe <ID_or_Alias>
To provide an unattended-access password, start a File Transfer session, or open a session in a particular display mode, use:
echo <password> | anydesk.exe <ID_or_Alias> –with-password
anydesk.exe <ID_or_Alias> –file-transfer
anydesk.exe <ID_or_Alias> –full-screen
anydesk.exe <ID_or_Alias> –plain
Uninstall AnyDesk from Windows 11
For a graphical uninstall, run:
anydesk.exe –uninstall
For a silent uninstall, run:
anydesk.exe –silent –remove
You can also use Windows 11 app-removal controls, but command-line removal is useful for scripted maintenance.
Important: –remove uninstalls the application but does not remove every residual file or user-data location. The installation directory C:\Program Files (x86)\AnyDesk may need to be deleted separately after the service and application have been removed. Check that you no longer need stored settings, logs, connection data, or other local files before manual cleanup.

The remote computer is unreachable after a reboot
This usually means the portable client was used or the installed service is not running. Install AnyDesk and confirm that it starts with Windows. Portable access is available only after someone manually launches the client.

The remote user cannot click a UAC prompt
A normal portable session does not have the required elevated access. Install AnyDesk or close the portable client and relaunch it with Run as administrator.
No connection request appears
Check Settings > Access > Interactive Access. If it is set to Never show incoming session requests, manual acceptance is disabled and the connecting person must use valid Unattended Access credentials. If it is set to Only show incoming session requests if AnyDesk window is open, open the AnyDesk window on the remote computer.
Closing AnyDesk ended the session
This is expected in portable mode. The installed client normally continues in the background after its window is closed.
FAQ
Does AnyDesk need to be installed on Windows 11?
No. The Windows EXE can run portably without installation. For permanent remote access, installation provides the Global Service, automatic startup, access after reboot or sign-out, Remote Restart, and better handling of elevated Windows operations.
What is the difference between the AnyDesk EXE and MSI?
The EXE supports both portable and installed operation. The MSI must be installed and does not support portable use.

Can portable AnyDesk provide unattended access?
Only while the portable program has been manually started. It does not start automatically after Windows reboots or a user signs out, so it is not equivalent to installed-mode unattended access.
How long should an AnyDesk unattended-access password be?
It must be at least eight characters. AnyDesk recommends more than 12 characters with a mixture of letters, numbers, and symbols.
Why can’t I control an administrator window through AnyDesk?
A normal portable session does not have elevated privileges and may not interact with UAC or administrator-level applications. Install AnyDesk or run the portable executable as administrator.
Does uninstalling AnyDesk with –remove delete all files?
No. The command removes the application but can leave residual files and user data. The directory C:\Program Files (x86)\AnyDesk may need separate cleanup after confirming that the remaining data is no longer needed.

For a one-time support call, open the Windows EXE and use AnyDesk portably. For a Windows 11 computer that must remain available without someone present, install the client, set a strong password under Settings > Access > Unattended Access, choose the appropriate Interactive Access policy, and restrict incoming IDs or aliases where practical.
