7-Zip is a free archive utility for Windows 11 that can create and extract 7z, ZIP, TAR, GZIP, BZIP2, XZ, WIM, and many other archive types. Windows 11 has built-in support for ZIP and several additional archive formats, but 7-Zip adds 7z creation, advanced compression, AES-256 encryption, archive testing, RAR5 extraction, and command-line automation.
This guide covers the current stable release, installation, Windows 11 context-menu behavior, archive extraction and creation, encryption, command-line examples, and common errors.
Which version of 7-Zip should you install?
As of August 7, 2026, the current stable Windows release is 7-Zip 26.02, released on June 25, 2026. Download it from the official 7-Zip download page. 7-Zip is free for personal and commercial use, and it does not require an account or payment.
| Download | Use it when |
|---|---|
| 64-bit Windows x64 | Most Windows 11 PCs with Intel or AMD processors |
| 64-bit Windows ARM64 | Windows 11 PCs using an ARM processor |
| 32-bit Windows x86 | Only when Windows itself is 32-bit |
| MSI for x64 or x86 | Managed or automated deployments; the executable installer is recommended for ordinary installations |
Check your Windows architecture
- Open Start > Settings > System > About.
- Find System type.
- Choose the x64 installer for a conventional Intel or AMD 64-bit system, or the ARM64 installer for an ARM-based system.
Do not download 7-Zip from similarly named third-party sites. The official project site is 7-zip.org. Its source repository is maintained at github.com/ip7z/7zip.

Install 7-Zip on Windows 11
Using the executable installer
- Open the official download page.
- Download the appropriate
.exefile, such as7z2602-x64.exeor7z2602-arm64.exe. - Open File Explorer and go to Downloads.
- Double-click the installer.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks whether to allow the installer to make changes.
- Leave the default installation folder unless you have a specific reason to change it.
- Select Install, then select Close when setup finishes.
The usual installation directory is:
C:\Program Files\7-Zip\
This installs both the graphical 7-Zip File Manager and command-line tools such as 7z.exe.
Install silently
For scripted deployment, open Command Prompt in the folder containing the installer and run:
7z2602-x64.exe /S /D="C:\Program Files\7-Zip"
/S enables silent installation and /D sets the destination. These options are case-sensitive.
For the MSI package, use:
msiexec /i 7z2602-x64.msi /q INSTALLDIR="C:\Program Files\7-Zip"
Install with WinGet
Windows 11 commonly provides WinGet through Microsoft’s App Installer package. Open Windows Terminal, PowerShell, or Command Prompt and run:
winget install --id 7zip.7zip --exact
The exact package ID prevents WinGet from choosing a similarly named result. To request version 26.02 explicitly:
winget install --id 7zip.7zip --exact --version 26.02
For a silent installation that accepts the package and source agreements:
winget install --id 7zip.7zip --exact --silent --accept-package-agreements --accept-source-agreements
WinGet may request administrator approval. If you decline the elevation prompt, installation may fail. If Windows reports that winget is not recognized, update or install App Installer from the Microsoft Store.

Open 7-Zip File Manager
You can launch the graphical file manager in either of these ways:
- Open Start > All, find the 7-Zip folder, and select 7-Zip File Manager.
- Press the Windows key, type 7-Zip, and select 7-Zip File Manager.
The executable is normally located at:
C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7zFM.exe
To change file associations or other settings that require elevated rights, search for 7-Zip File Manager, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
Find 7-Zip in Windows 11’s right-click menu
Windows 11 normally places traditional Win32 shell extensions in the older context menu. Therefore, 7-Zip may not appear in the first menu you see.
- In File Explorer, select a file, folder, or archive.
- Right-click the selection.
- Select Show more options.
- Point to or select 7-Zip.
The submenu commonly includes:
- Open archive
- Extract files…
- Extract Here
- Extract to “archive-name”
- Add to archive…
- Add to “name.7z”
- Add to “name.zip”
- Test archive
- Calculate checksum
The available commands vary according to whether you selected an archive, a folder, or ordinary files. Right-clicking empty space in a folder produces a different menu, so select the item first.
Extract files with 7-Zip
Extract to a specific folder
- Right-click the archive.
- Select Show more options > 7-Zip > Extract files….
- Enter or browse to the destination folder.
- Review the path and select OK.
This is the best general-purpose option because you can verify where the files will be written before extraction starts.
Extract in the current folder
Select Show more options > 7-Zip > Extract Here. The contents are placed beside the archive. Be careful with archives that contain many loose files rather than one top-level folder, because extraction can clutter the current directory.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Extract into a new folder
Select Show more options > 7-Zip > Extract to “archive-name\”. 7-Zip creates a folder named after the archive and puts the contents inside it. This is usually safer than Extract Here for downloads.
Extract only selected files
- Right-click the archive and select Show more options > 7-Zip > Open archive.
- In 7-Zip File Manager, select the files or folders you need.
- Select Extract on the toolbar.
- Choose the destination and select OK.
Prefer the Extract command when possible. Dragging files from 7-Zip File Manager into Windows Explorer can make 7-Zip extract them into a temporary folder first and then copy them to the destination, which requires additional disk space.
Create an archive
- Select the files or folders to compress.
- Right-click the selection and choose Show more options > 7-Zip > Add to archive….
- Enter the archive name and path in the Archive field.
- Choose 7z or zip from Archive format.
- Choose a compression level.
- Optionally configure a password under Encryption.
- Select OK.
| Format | Best choice when |
|---|---|
| 7z | You want 7-Zip’s compression features, maximum compression options, or encrypted file names |
| ZIP | The archive will be sent to people who may not have 7-Zip installed |
Use 7z for your own backups or controlled environments. Use ZIP when compatibility is more important than compression or 7z-specific features. Windows 11 includes built-in ZIP support and can handle several additional archive formats in current releases, but 7-Zip remains useful for 7z creation, advanced compression, encryption, archive testing, and broad format support.
Encrypt an archive with a password
- Open the Add to archive… dialog.
- Set Archive format to 7z.
- Enter a password in Enter password.
- Enter it again in Reenter password.
- Enable Encrypt file names if the contents list must also be hidden.
- Select OK.
7-Zip supports AES-256 encryption in both 7z and ZIP archives. Encrypting file names is a 7z feature that prevents someone from viewing the archive’s directory listing without the password.

Use a strong, unique password and store it securely. 7-Zip does not provide a normal password-recovery service; losing the password may make the data inaccessible.
Use 7-Zip from the command line
The command-line executable is normally:
C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7z.exe
If the folder is not in your PATH, use the full path in commands. The general syntax is:
7z <command> [switches] <archive_name> [file_names]
Create a 7z archive
"C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7z.exe" a "backup.7z" "C:\Users\YourName\Documents"
a means Add. If backup.7z does not exist, 7-Zip creates it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCreate a ZIP archive
"C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7z.exe" a -tzip "backup.zip" "C:\Users\YourName\Documents"
The -tzip switch selects ZIP format.
Extract while preserving paths
"C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7z.exe" x "backup.7z" -o"C:\Temp\Backup"
x extracts files using the directory paths stored in the archive. Notice that -o is immediately followed by the output path; do not insert a space.
Extract without stored paths
"C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7z.exe" e "archive.zip" -o"C:\Temp\Files"

List and test an archive
List its contents without extracting:
"C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7z.exe" l "archive.7z"
Test its integrity:
"C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7z.exe" t "archive.7z"
The t command checks the archive without writing the extracted files to disk.

Include matching files in subfolders
"C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7z.exe" a -r "text-files.7z" "C:\Data\*.txt"
When you provide a directory directly, 7-Zip normally includes its subfolders. The -r switch is mainly important when you use patterns such as *.txt.
Important wildcard behavior
7-Zip does not interpret wildcards exactly like the Windows CMD parser. In particular, this command does not mean every file:
Recommended Free Tools
7z a archive.7z *.*
In 7-Zip, *.* matches files with an extension. To include files with and without extensions, use:
7z a archive.7z *
Alternatively, specify the directory itself:
7z a archive.7z "C:\Data"
Supported formats and RAR files
7-Zip can create archives in formats including 7z, ZIP, TAR, GZIP, BZIP2, XZ, and WIM, and can unpack many additional formats. It can extract RAR and RAR5 archives, but it does not create RAR archives. Claims that current 7-Zip releases cannot open RAR5 files are outdated.

7-Zip is not in the first right-click menu
This is normally Windows 11 behavior rather than an installation problem. Select the file or folder, right-click it, and choose Show more options > 7-Zip. The legacy context menu contains the traditional 7-Zip shell extension.
File associations cannot be changed
Close 7-Zip File Manager, then search for it from Start, right-click it, and select Run as administrator. Configure associations from the elevated File Manager.

“Can not open file … as archive”
The extension alone does not prove that a file is an archive. The download may be incomplete, the archive header may be damaged, the file may be corrupt, or the format may use a method unsupported by the installed version. Install the current release, confirm that the download completed, and use 7-Zip File Manager > Test when the archive can be opened.
“Data Error” or “CRC Error”
These errors mean that the data no longer matches the archive’s integrity information. Common causes include an incomplete transfer, damaged storage, a corrupt archive, or an incorrect password. Recovery can be difficult, especially with solid 7z archives. Re-download the archive or obtain another copy before attempting repair.
Extraction fails because of insufficient memory
High compression settings can use large dictionaries and require substantial RAM. A 32-bit Windows process also has a much smaller practical virtual-address limit. For large archives and dictionaries, 64-bit Windows with sufficient physical memory is the appropriate environment.
Extraction creates temporary files
Dragging content from 7-Zip into Windows Explorer can cause temporary extraction before the final copy. Use Extract files… or the File Manager’s Extract command when disk space or temporary-file handling matters.
FAQ
Is 7-Zip free on Windows 11?
Yes. 7-Zip is free software, including for commercial use. You do not need to register or pay to install it.
Do I need 7-Zip to open ZIP files in Windows 11?
No. Windows 11 includes built-in ZIP support and can handle several other archive formats in current releases. 7-Zip is useful when you need 7z archives, advanced compression, encryption, archive testing, command-line automation, or support for additional formats.
Why does 7-Zip not appear when I right-click a file?
Windows 11 commonly puts traditional 7-Zip shell commands in the legacy menu. Right-click the selected item and choose Show more options, then select 7-Zip.
Which 7-Zip installer should I use?
Use 64-bit x64 for most Intel- and AMD-based Windows 11 PCs, ARM64 for ARM-based PCs, and x86 only when Windows itself is 32-bit. The official site recommends the executable installer for normal installations.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can 7-Zip open RAR5 files?
Yes. Current 7-Zip releases support extracting RAR5 archives. 7-Zip does not create RAR archives.
What is the difference between 7z and ZIP?
7z generally offers 7-Zip’s advanced compression features and can hide file names when encrypted. ZIP is usually the better choice when recipients need maximum compatibility with built-in tools and other operating systems.
Can I recover a forgotten 7-Zip password?
7-Zip does not provide a normal password-recovery mechanism. If a strong password is lost, the encrypted data may be inaccessible.
The Bottom Line
Download 7-Zip 26.02 from 7-zip.org, use the x64 installer on most Windows 11 PCs, and look under Show more options when the 7-Zip menu is not visible. Use Extract files… when you need control over the destination, choose 7z for advanced compression and encryption, choose ZIP for compatibility, and run the t command before trusting an important archive.
