Install and update mods through the method supported by your specific game, and check compatibility before changing a working setup. Nexus Mods’ Vortex, Steam Workshop subscriptions, and CurseForge’s Minecraft modpack flow serve different games and are not interchangeable. Back up saves and configuration separately, then treat platform scanning and moderation as useful screening—not a guarantee that every file is safe.
Before installing: check the game, mod, and version
Start with the exact game edition, platform, and version you use. Confirm that the game supports the mod platform or manager you intend to use, then open the mod’s original page and review its requirements, supported game versions, dependencies, installation notes, and update notes. A mod may be available on a platform without being compatible with your edition or current game version.
Version matching is especially explicit in CurseForge’s Minecraft documentation: each mod file and profile is associated with a Minecraft version. Check that the profile, mod loader, and mod files match the pack’s stated requirements. In other games, use the mod page and the game’s own documentation. For example, the Ostranauts modding guide describes a warning when a mod targets an older version than the running game; that behavior is specific to Ostranauts, not a universal Workshop feature.
Choose the installation route your game supports
These services do not provide one universal installation process. Use the route documented for the particular game and mod.

Nexus Mods with Vortex
Nexus Mods describes Vortex as a manager for supported games, with tools for installing and organizing mods and checking for available updates. Confirm the correct game instance and the mod’s requirements before using it. Vortex can streamline management, but it does not certify that a downloaded file is safe.
Steam Workshop
In a game that implements Workshop support, subscribing through the Workshop or the game’s own menu is a common installation route. What happens after subscription—including how updates are downloaded and whether the game offers controls—depends on that title. The Ostranauts guide, for instance, says its Workshop mods download automatically when updates are available and that the game lists detected mods. Check the current instructions for your own game rather than assuming it behaves the same way.

CurseForge for Minecraft modpacks
For Minecraft modpacks, follow the installation flow documented by CurseForge Support. Match the selected profile, Minecraft version, loader, and pack requirements. These instructions concern Minecraft modpacks; they should not be treated as a general procedure for every game available through CurseForge.
Back up before changing a working setup
Before a major installation or update, make a separate copy of the files you would need to recover: relevant saves, configuration, and mod data. Keep the copy somewhere outside the game’s active folders so that a failed update or reinstall does not overwrite it. An external drive can be one backup location, but the important step is verifying that the copy contains the files your game actually uses.

Do not assume a platform backup includes every save or custom file. Steam Support’s backup guidance warns that saves and custom content for Valve-created games are excluded, and says many games using third-party installers or downloaders will not work with Steam’s backup feature. Check your selected game’s save location and backup behavior separately.
Update mods in a controlled way
- Record what is currently working. Note the game version, mod or pack versions, and any important configuration before making changes.
- Read the update information. Check the mod or pack page for changed requirements, supported game versions, dependencies, and known incompatibilities.
- Protect recoverable files. Copy saves, configuration, and mod data separately before changing a stable setup.
- Apply the update using the game’s supported method. Use Vortex only for a supported game, the game’s Workshop implementation where applicable, or the documented CurseForge Minecraft flow.
- Test the result before continuing. Start the game and check that the changed content loads as expected. If you are diagnosing a conflict, update one logical group at a time so you can identify which change caused it.
- Recover if needed. If the game no longer loads correctly, disable or remove the changed mod using the game’s documented method, or restore the separate backup. Exact rollback steps vary by game and manager.
Automatic updates can alter a setup that previously worked. Where a game provides update controls, consult that game’s current documentation before changing them; Workshop behavior and controls are implemented per title.

What platform security checks do—and do not—mean
Nexus Mods says uploaded content goes through multiple security checks and virus scanning before becoming available for download. It also notes that antivirus software can flag mod files because some mods contain code or behavior resembling threats. Screening is useful, but it is not a promise that every file is harmless. If you receive a security alert, investigate the specific file and mod page and consult credible security guidance rather than automatically dismissing the alert.
Steam tModLoader announcements describe work with Valve on a moderation approval queue intended to catch malicious Workshop items or updates, while acknowledging that mod use carries risk. Moderation can reduce exposure, but it cannot replace checking a mod’s requirements and update notes, using the official platform page, and keeping recoverable copies of important files.

How to choose between the services
The practical choice is the one supported by your game, not a general ranking of platforms. Use these checks when deciding how to install or maintain a particular setup:
- Game support: Does the game officially support the platform or manager?
- Management features: Does the supported method help organize installations or check for updates?
- Compatibility information: Does the mod clearly state its game version, loader, and dependencies?
- Update behavior: Does the game update subscribed content automatically, or provide controls? Confirm this in that game’s documentation.
- Recovery: Can you identify and separately back up the saves, configuration, and mod data you would need to restore?
Vortex’s management features apply to supported games; the cited CurseForge version guidance is for Minecraft; and Workshop subscription and update behavior depend on the individual game. For exact folders, file formats, loader requirements, update controls, and rollback steps, follow the current instructions for your specific game and mod.
