Install a Windows game through the store or launcher where you own it, then use that same app to manage updates. Windows 11 on Arm can emulate many x86 and x64 games, but installation alone does not prove a game will launch or work online: unsupported drivers, especially some anti-cheat drivers, can block it.
Before you install: check the game and your Windows version
Use a supported Windows 11 Arm installation and install available Windows updates before troubleshooting a game. Windows 11 version 24H2 includes Microsoft’s Prism emulation technology, which lets many x86 and x64 applications run on Arm. Some Prism performance features require hardware capabilities available on Snapdragon X series processors; emulation is not a guarantee that a particular game will work.
The key limit is drivers. Windows emulation handles user-mode code, not kernel-mode drivers. A game may therefore install but fail to launch, run poorly, or block multiplayer if it relies on an anti-cheat driver that does not support Arm PCs. Check the game publisher’s Windows-on-Arm guidance and game-specific requirements before downloading or buying. Microsoft also points users to its Windows Arm-based PCs FAQ and Works on WoA, an evolving third-party compatibility list that includes Microsoft-contributed data; treat listings as useful signals, not guarantees.
Choose the launcher that owns the game
Use the store or publisher launcher where you bought, claimed, or access the game. That app handles its own installation and updates; an install in one storefront does not update a copy managed by another.

Store operating-system and hardware requirements are worth checking, but a conventional Windows requirement is not an Arm compatibility certification. Catalog breadth, ownership, and local-versus-cloud availability also differ, so Xbox and Steam catalog claims are not directly comparable.
Install a game with the Xbox PC app
Microsoft announced on January 21, 2026 that the Xbox PC app was available on Arm-based Windows 11 PCs, with local downloads for a wide range of titles. Microsoft said at that time that more than 85% of the Game Pass catalog was compatible with these PCs. That is a dated Microsoft status claim, not a promise that every Game Pass game works locally on every device or that the figure remains unchanged.
- Open the Xbox PC app and install any app update it offers, then sign in to the account that owns or subscribes to the game.
- Find the title in the catalog or your library and review its availability for local play.
- For a locally supported title, choose Install and let the app manage the download.
- For titles that are not supported locally, check whether Xbox Cloud Gaming is available for your account and region and whether your connection is suitable.
Microsoft’s Windows Experience Blog described the change this way on January 21, 2026: “Players can now download and enjoy a wide range of titles from the Xbox PC app game catalog on Arm-based Windows 11 PCs.” Its Xbox Wire announcement likewise said players could download titles from the catalog to play locally. These are Microsoft statements about availability and catalog support, not independent game-by-game tests. App screens and supported titles can change.

Install a game with Steam
- Download and install Steam using Valve’s official Steam installer instructions.
- Sign in, open Library, select a game you own, and choose Install.
- Before committing to a large download, check the game’s Steam store page for supported operating systems and hardware requirements, then confirm Arm-specific compatibility with the publisher or compatibility data.
Steam’s listed Windows support does not by itself confirm that the game’s drivers or anti-cheat work on Arm. Valve’s guidance is to check both operating-system support and hardware requirements.

Update games in the launcher that installed them
Xbox PC app
Manage Xbox downloads and updates in the Xbox PC app. Open the app and use its download or library controls to see active downloads and available updates; exact labels may change as the app is updated.
Steam
Steam manages downloads and updates in its Download Manager. You can set update behavior for an individual title by opening Library > right-click the game > Properties > Updates. Available choices include keeping the game updated, updating only when launched, or giving it high priority. The client queues updates according to your download settings. Other publisher launchers
Open the launcher tied to the game and use its own update controls. The available screens and options depend on the publisher, so follow that launcher’s current instructions rather than applying Steam or Xbox steps to it.

These steps address client, download, disk, or local-file problems. They do not resolve an incompatibility caused by a game’s unsupported driver or anti-cheat.

- Clear Steam’s download cache.
- Repair the Steam library folder.
- Verify the game’s local files.
- Check for and install available Windows updates.
Valve documents these options in its Steam installation and update troubleshooting guide. If the game still fails after client repairs, check its Arm and anti-cheat support with the publisher rather than assuming another reinstall will solve it.
Make room for large game downloads
If your internal drive is full, Steam supports alternate library folders and moving an installed game to another folder through its download and storage controls. An external drive may provide extra capacity, but it is optional; performance and compatibility depend on the drive, connection, and game. Keep enough free space for downloads and updates, which may need additional working room while files are being installed.
