To install and set up a TP-Link Tapo video doorbell, first identify its exact model and hardware version: Tapo doorbells differ in power and chime requirements, so wiring steps are not interchangeable. Then follow the matching regional guide, choose battery or supported wired power, mount the doorbell, and add it through the Tapo app.

The D225/D235/TD25 instructions below are a useful example for dual-power models, not a universal guide. Check the support page for your model and region before connecting wires.

Identify your model before starting

Find the model name and hardware version on the doorbell or its packaging. Open the matching regional manual and support page before drilling or touching wiring; model availability, hardware revisions, setup prompts, and features can vary by market.

For example, TP-Link’s D210 support page lists multiple hardware versions and model-specific installation and setup videos. The D225 V1.6 download page lists its user guide and quick installation guide. Use the guide for the exact revision you own.

The doorbell camera also has a built in 10,000mAh battery allowing for flexible installation wherever needed for up to 8 months of battery life between charges.
  • 【Incredible 2K QHD Live View】View with incredible clarity monitoring in fine detail. Easily identify faces even when zoomed in, showing you everything you need to see outside your door. 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi required; does not support 5 GHz.

  • 【Free Person/Package/Vehicle Detection】This smart doorbell is equipped with advanced AI technology that detects any person, package or vehicle approaching your property. It sends real-time notifications directly to your device indicating person/vehicle/package detection, with the ability to select one, all, or no detection notifications.

Check the package contents against that guide. The D225 product page lists a chime, mounting bracket, wedges, template, jumper, extension wires, screws, anchors, wire nuts, and adhesive; not every model or package necessarily includes the same parts.

Choose battery or wired power

Battery installation avoids connecting the doorbell to existing doorbell wiring. On the cited dual-power instructions, you can skip the wiring connection and choose a mounting position with suitable wireless coverage. When the battery is depleted, it must be detached for charging.

For D225-family battery mode, TP-Link advertises up to eight months of use, but says actual runtime varies with settings, usage, router specifications, and environmental conditions. Treat that as an estimate, not a guaranteed interval.

For hardwiring under TP-Link’s D235/D225/TD25 guidance, the existing doorbell system must be wired—not battery powered—and use an 8–24 V AC transformer rated at least 10 VA. That requirement is specific to those instructions; do not apply it to another Tapo model without checking its manual.

Decide whether to keep the existing chime

On the cited D225-family models, the choice affects both chime behavior and continuous recording. With the existing chime connected, TP-Link says the doorbell uses battery power and continuous recording is unavailable. To enable Always-On Mode and 24/7 recording, the instructions require bypassing the traditional chime with the included jumper.

  • Keep the existing chime: Use the model’s instructions for the non-bypassed wiring arrangement. Continuous recording is not available in that arrangement, according to TP-Link’s broader chime FAQ.
  • Use Always-On Mode: Bypass the traditional chime as directed in the exact manual. The existing chime will not operate in the usual way.

Chime options also vary by model category: wired-only models use their corresponding packaged wireless chime, while battery-only doorbells cannot connect to the existing chime circuit. Confirm your model’s compatibility rather than assuming an old mechanical chime will work.

Mount the doorbell

The D225-family guide describes adhesive mounting on suitable smooth surfaces or screw mounting with the supplied template and anchors. It identifies tile, glass, marble, metal, stainless steel, and smooth walls as examples of surfaces for the one-time-use adhesive. For uneven surfaces, it notes using the foam pad behind the bracket or a wedge. Follow the exact guide for orientation and included hardware.

  1. Choose the location and orientation using the model guide, checking wireless coverage if installing in battery mode.
  2. If wires are present, route them through the bracket as shown in the guide.
  3. For adhesive installation, prepare a suitable smooth surface and attach the bracket with the supplied adhesive. For screw installation, mark the holes with the template, drill as directed, insert anchors, and fasten the bracket.
  4. Attach the doorbell to the mounted bracket as shown in the model’s instructions.

Hardwire safely, if your model supports it

Do not work on the chime or doorbell wiring while the circuit is powered. TP-Link’s D225-family procedure calls for switching off the circuit breaker and confirming power is off by ringing the existing doorbell several times. Photograph the original chime wiring before changing anything.

For Always-On Mode on those models, TP-Link directs users to place the supplied jumper across Front and Trans for a front doorbell, or Rear and Trans for a rear doorbell. Refit the chime cover, then connect the doorbell wires as shown in the correct model guide. If your chime has different terminal markings, stop and consult a licensed electrician rather than guessing.

Pair an optional chime or hub

After the doorbell is set up, TP-Link’s chime guide—last updated September 23, 2026—gives this app path: open the doorbell’s live view, select Device Settings, then Doorbell > Paired Chimes > Add Chime/Hub, and follow the prompts.

A Tapo Chime connects over Wi-Fi and needs both Wi-Fi and Internet access where it is placed. Supported Tapo Hubs can also act as chimes with compatible firmware. TP-Link documents Alexa Echo and Google Assistant speakers or displays as optional chimes after setup on their respective platforms; availability depends on model, firmware, and platform support.
