To avoid damaging a controller’s thumbsticks, first confirm that the extender fits your exact controller and the stick’s shape, then use the fitting instructions for that specific attachment style. Flexible grips and clip-on extenders are not installed the same way. For clip-on extenders, do not guess at a removal technique: use the product’s instructions or contact its maker for guidance.
Check your controller and stick shape before installing an extender
Identify your controller model and whether its stock thumbsticks are concave or domed. Then check the accessory maker’s compatibility guide for that exact combination; a fit listed for another controller is not proof that it will fit yours.
KontrolFreek says its Performance Thumbsticks are primarily designed for standard PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One controllers. Its guide also lists additional fits and exceptions, so those product families are not a substitute for checking the specific model.
For example, KontrolFreek says its Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One products generally fit both concave and domed stock sticks on Xbox Elite and Elite Series 2 controllers. The exception is Low-rise: it fits concave Elite sticks, but not domed ones. The guide also lists some controllers for which only No-Slip Thumb Grips are compatible, and others with no compatible Performance Thumbsticks listed. Check KontrolFreek’s compatibility guide before buying or fitting an accessory.

Identify whether you have a flexible grip or a clip-on extender
Attachment style matters because the instructions for one kind of accessory may not apply to another. KontrolFreek’s instructions for No-Slip Thumb Grips describe fitting a flexible grip; they are not general instructions for clip-on Performance Thumbsticks.

How to put on a flexible No-Slip Thumb Grip
- Confirm that the grip is listed for your controller and inspect the stock stick shape.
- Turn the flexible grip inside out, as described in KontrolFreek’s No-Slip Thumb Grip instructions.
- Position it over the analog stick, then roll it right-side out so it secures around the stick.
- Look underneath the stick and check that the entire grip is secured around the corners. KontrolFreek specifically gives this seating check for its No-Slip Thumb Grip.
How to remove clip-on thumbstick extenders
The official materials reviewed here do not provide a general removal procedure for clip-on Performance Thumbsticks. That means there is no sourced basis here for recommending a particular prying, twisting, or tool method. Consult the instructions for your exact extender and controller, or contact the accessory maker’s support before trying to remove it.

Do not use the flexible No-Slip Thumb Grip fitting steps as a removal method for a clip-on extender; the two accessories attach differently. If your controller maker warns against third-party accessories, follow that guidance rather than assuming an extender is safe for your model.

Product claims also need to stay within their stated scope. KontrolFreek’s Inferno Edition Performance Thumbsticks listing says the product “Snaps securely onto analog stick without damage.” That is KontrolFreek’s claim for that listed product, not a guarantee for every extender or controller.
