To install the Steam copy of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on a Steam Deck, open Library in Gaming Mode, select the game, choose Install, and then select Play when installation finishes. Steam currently lists 60 GB of available space for the game; check its live store page for the Deck compatibility label before you start.
Install the game from your Steam Library
- Open Library: In Gaming Mode, open Library and select The Witcher 3.
- Choose Install: If Steam asks where to install it, choose a storage location with enough free space.
- Wait for installation: Let the download and installation complete.
- Start the game: Return to the game page and select Play.
Steam identifies CD PROJEKT RED as the game’s developer and publisher. Its current support listing specifies 60 GB of available space and says the system requirements changed on September 29, 2026. Check the Steam support listing for the current requirement before installation, as older storage figures may no longer apply.
Check the current Steam Deck compatibility label
Open The Witcher 3’s live Steam Store page and check its Steam Deck compatibility information. The specific current rating is not established here, so do not rely on an older label or assume the game is Verified.
Steam uses four categories:
- Verified: Steam considers the game suitable for Deck use.
- Playable: The game works, but may require some manual configuration from the user.
- Unsupported: Steam indicates the game does not work on Deck.
- Unknown: Steam has not tested compatibility.
A label is useful guidance, not a report of a performance test. The available information does not establish game-specific frame rates, battery life, or recommended settings.

If the game will not launch
Start with Steam’s general troubleshooting recommendations. These steps are not confirmed Witcher-specific fixes.
- Install available SteamOS updates: Check for system updates and install any that are available.
- Restart the Deck: Restart after updating, then try launching the game again.
- Try a Proton compatibility tool: In Gaming Mode, open Library, highlight The Witcher 3, press the Menu button, and choose Properties > Compatibility. Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then try the latest Proton version available in the list.
If the game starts but performance is poor, Steam’s general guidance is to choose a lower graphics preset or reduce individual graphics settings. No particular preset or setting combination is established as best for this game on Deck.

Install to a microSD card if you need more room
A microSD card is optional; use one only if the Deck’s available internal storage is not sufficient for the game and your other files. Valve’s specifications list a high-speed microSD card slot supporting UHS-I SD, SDXC, and SDHC cards. Compare your remaining space, card compatibility, capacity, price, and expected loading-time trade-offs before buying. The available specifications do not establish a preferred brand, capacity, or loading-time result.

Steam lists Steam Cloud for the game, but that does not confirm that a particular save has uploaded. Before switching between your Deck and another device, allow synchronization to finish and check its status in Steam. Do not assume a save is backed up until Steam indicates synchronization is complete.
