Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Installing an internal SSD in a handheld console is a model-specific hardware and software job: first confirm the exact model and revision, then match the drive’s form factor and interface, back up your data, and follow that device’s official service and recovery instructions. There is no universal handheld-console SSD size or format procedure.
Check which SSD fits your handheld
Before buying a drive or opening the console, find its exact model and hardware revision. Check the manufacturer’s documentation for the supported M.2 length, interface, and any service restrictions. M.2 describes the drive’s physical format; the interface must also be compatible. A drive’s advertised peak speed does not establish that it will fit or work.
| Device example | SSD specification in the cited guide | What this means |
|---|---|---|
| Lenovo Legion Go Gen 2 | One M.2 slot; PCIe Gen4; slot type listed as 2242 or 2280. Lenovo Legion Go Gen 2 User Guide; publication date not shown. | Use this specification only for the Gen 2 model covered by that guide. It does not establish compatibility for the original Legion Go or other handhelds. |
| Other handhelds or revisions | Not established by the cited device-specific documentation. | Look up the exact model’s official specifications and service instructions before selecting a drive. |
Choose capacity, warranty, and price only after compatibility is confirmed. If you plan to keep your current system installation, check whether you can clone the old drive; otherwise, confirm that the manufacturer provides a supported recovery or reinstall route.
Back up data and choose a migration plan
Save important files before replacing the drive. You can either clone the old SSD to the new one, if your device and tools support that workflow, or install the new SSD and restore or reinstall the operating system using the device’s supported method.

A Legion Go walkthrough describes cloning with an SSD enclosure before opening the original Legion Go. That is an example workflow, not a universal procedure for every handheld: Windows Central’s original Legion Go SSD walkthrough. Confirm that the enclosure supports your drive and that the cloning method applies to your operating system.
Install the SSD using the device-specific service procedure
Power the handheld down completely and follow the teardown instructions for its precise model. Opening a device can damage connectors or components, and a sequence that is safe for one handheld may not be safe for another. Use suitable precision tools and take care not to force the case or cables.

For the original Legion Go, the cited walkthrough describes powering off, removing the rear case, disconnecting the battery, replacing the SSD, reconnecting the battery, and reassembling the device. It also describes using a 2230 extender to fit a 2230 drive in that model’s 2242 slot. These are details for the original Legion Go walkthrough, not instructions for Legion Go Gen 2 or other consoles. Consult the applicable model’s service documentation before attempting any repair.
Format the drive or restore the operating system
Installing a drive and preparing it for use are separate steps. The correct process depends on the handheld’s operating system and whether you cloned the previous drive. Use the manufacturer’s current instructions for disk initialization, recovery, or reinstall; do not apply a Windows formatting procedure to a SteamOS recovery process, or vice versa.

For Steam Deck, Steam Support documents a recovery process that includes a wipe-and-install option. That option erases data on the device, so back up anything important and follow Steam’s instructions rather than treating it as a generic format step: Steam Support: Steam Deck recovery instructions.

If your goal is simply to add space for games, a compatible microSD card may avoid opening the handheld. ASUS says the ROG Ally has a UHS-II or backward-compatible microSD reader and supports installing games to that storage device: ASUS ROG Ally Series Frequently Asked Questions. Lenovo’s Legion Go Gen 2 guide also lists a microSD slot. Check your own model’s documentation and the game or launcher’s storage options before choosing this route.
