To install an AIO liquid cooler, fit the correct socket hardware, mount the radiator so its highest point sits above the pump where possible, and connect each cable according to the cooler’s wiring diagram and motherboard manual. There is no universal rule that every pump belongs on AIO_PUMP: some leads power the pump, while others only report its speed.

Before you install the cooler

Read the manual for the exact cooler and motherboard. Check CPU socket compatibility, the case’s radiator and fan clearance, tubing reach, and which bracket or backplate your socket requires. Keep screws and standoffs sorted by socket, and disconnect the PC from power before working inside it.

Check the cooler’s cables and wiring diagram before mounting. Some systems use a supplied splitter or controller, SATA power, internal USB, or proprietary connections; others connect directly to motherboard headers. On select ASUS motherboards, a Q-Connector is supported; if your board does not support it, use the cooler’s pre-installed cables as directed by ASUS’s Q-Connector guide.

How to install an AIO liquid cooler

  1. Prepare the CPU and mounting hardware

Install the backplate and retention bracket in the orientation shown in the cooler instructions. If this is a reinstallation, clean off the old thermal paste and apply fresh paste as directed. For a first installation, follow the instructions about any paste already applied to the cold plate.

ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 A-RGB - AIO CPU Cooler, Water Cooling
    • CONTACT FRAME FOR INTEL LGA1851 | LGA1700: Optimized contact pressure distribution for longer CPU life and better heat dissipation
    • ARCTIC's P12 PRO FAN: More power at any speed - more powerful and quieter than the P12, especially at low speeds. Higher maximum speed for optimal cooling performance under high load
    • NATIVE OFFSET MOUNTING FOR INTEL AND AMD: Shifting the cold plate center towards the CPU hotspot ensures more efficient heat transfer
    • INTEGRATED VRM FAN: PWM-controlled fan that lowers the temperature of the voltage converters and thus ensures reliable performance
    • INTEGRATED CABLE MANAGEMENT: The PWM cables of the radiator fans are integrated in the sheathing of the hoses so that only a single visible cable is connected to the motherboard
  2. Seat and secure the pump block

Remove the cold plate’s protective cover just before installation. Set the pump over the CPU and align its fasteners with the correct standoffs. Start all the screws before tightening them, then tighten gradually in a cross or diagonal pattern to distribute pressure. NZXT’s Kraken Core guide says to start all four retention screws loosely and tighten in an X pattern; ASUS also directs diagonal tightening in its installation guidance. Do not add washers or spacers unless the cooler manual specifically calls for them.

  3. Mount the radiator and fans

Choose a position that fits the radiator and fans without sharply bending the tubes or putting pressure on the fittings. As a general orientation principle, keep the radiator’s highest point above the pump so air collects away from the pump. Corsair identifies a top mount or a front mount with the tubes at the bottom as good arrangements; if a front mount with tubes up is the only workable option, keep the pump below the radiator’s highest point. See Corsair’s radiator mounting guidance and the Nautilus installation guide. Use the airflow arrow on the fan frame to confirm fan direction.

    • Easy Daisy-Chained Connections: Reduce the wiring in your system by daisy-chaining your RS ARGB fans and connecting them to just one 4-pin PWM fan header and one +5V ARGB header
  4. Connect the pump and radiator fans

Identify each lead by its label and the cooler’s wiring diagram. Connect the pump and fans to the specified headers, splitter, or controller. Follow the motherboard manual for header behavior, fan monitoring, and any UEFI/BIOS settings the cooler maker recommends.

  5. Connect lighting and control cables

Connect ARGB or RGB lighting only to a header with the specified voltage and connector type. Do not force a plug. Other cooler cables may need SATA power, internal USB, a vendor controller, or a proprietary connection; use the exact product guide to identify each one.

    • High-Efficiency Cooling Pump – Equipped with a massive copper base plate for superior cooling at all loads.
    • Skeleton-Frame Pump Head Design – Unique pump head with vivid ARGB lighting, fully customizable via motherboard sync.
    • Extreme Cooling Performance – High-density fins paired with powerful PWM ARGB radiator fans ensure optimized airflow and efficient heat transfer.

    • Durable Build – Elastic high-density tubing and hydraulic bearing fans deliver long-lasting, quiet, and stable operation.
  6. Check operation before closing the case

Confirm the block is secure and all required power and control connections are in place. Check that the radiator fans spin and that the motherboard or cooler software reports the expected pump and fan readings. If CPU_FAN is unused because monitoring is routed elsewhere, consult the motherboard manual for the correct fan-monitoring setting rather than ignoring a warning by default.

Should the pump connect to CPU_FAN or AIO_PUMP?

Use the header specified by the cooler maker—not a universal rule. A pump lead may supply power and control, or it may only report pump speed (tachometer). The cooler’s wiring diagram identifies which kind of lead you have; the motherboard manual explains the headers’ capabilities and defaults.

How to avoid RGB and ARGB connection damage

Check both voltage and connector type before attaching lighting. NZXT identifies the Kraken Core cap lighting lead as 5 V ARGB and warns against connecting it to a 12 V RGB or UART connector, which can permanently damage the PC or cooler. Its guide says: “Do not attempt to connect the 5V ARGB header on the Kraken Core or its included fan to 12V RGB or UART connectors!” Other coolers may use different lighting connections, so verify the model’s instructions rather than relying on a similar-looking plug.

Final checks and common connection problems

  • The motherboard shows a CPU fan warning: Confirm the cooler’s fan-monitoring lead is connected as directed. If the cooler routes monitoring elsewhere and CPU_FAN is intentionally unused, look up the board’s fan-monitoring options in its manual.
  • The pump or fans do not behave as expected: Recheck the model’s wiring diagram and motherboard header instructions. AIO_PUMP, CPU_OPT, CPU_FAN2, and similar headers can have different capabilities or default speed behavior on different boards; some may default to full speed.
  • The radiator does not fit cleanly: Reassess radiator and fan clearance and tube routing before tightening everything down. Avoid sharp bends or tension at the fittings, and choose another supported case position if needed.
  • The lighting does not connect: Verify voltage and connector type against the cooler guide. Do not force a connector or try a different header based only on its shape.
