Stats is an open-source macOS menu bar system monitor. The project supports macOS 12 Monterey and newer and documents installation either by downloading its DMG or with Homebrew. After installing, enable only the metric modules you need and turn on their menu bar widgets.
What Stats monitors
Stats can display CPU and GPU utilization, memory and disk usage, network activity, battery level, sensor information such as temperature, voltage and power, Bluetooth devices, and clocks for multiple time zones. Fan control is also present, but the project describes it as legacy functionality that receives no ongoing updates or fixes.
Stats is available under the MIT license, and its source code is published in the exelban/Stats repository. The instructions and feature details below are from the project documentation.
Check compatibility before installing
The project lists macOS 12 Monterey or newer as its supported baseline and says beta macOS releases are not supported. It links a legacy version for older systems, but does not establish which older macOS versions or app releases that version supports. No release-specific or Mac-model compatibility matrix is provided.

Install Stats
Option 1: Download the DMG
- Open the official Stats repository and download the latest
Stats.dmgfrom the project’s releases. - Open the downloaded DMG file.
- Move Stats to your Applications folder, then open it from there.
Option 2: Install with Homebrew
- Open Terminal.
- Run
brew install stats. - Open Stats from Applications or your usual app launcher.
Choose which metrics appear
Start with the modules that answer a question you actually have—for example, CPU and memory when checking performance, or network and battery when monitoring activity away from a charger. In Stats settings, activate the modules you want, then enable and arrange the corresponding menu bar widgets. The project notes that modules have different resource costs and identifies Sensors and Bluetooth as the least efficient.
Stats says disabling Sensors and Bluetooth could reduce CPU usage and power use by up to 50% in some cases. This is a qualified claim from the project, not a guaranteed or independently measured result. If energy impact matters, try disabling those modules and observe whether it helps on your Mac.
Fix missing menu bar icons
Stats runs, but its icons are absent on macOS 26
First confirm that at least one module is active and its widget is enabled. Then open System Settings → Menu Bar and allow Stats. The project says macOS 26 adds this privacy control, which can prevent the icons from appearing until Stats is permitted.

Reorder menu bar icons
macOS determines menu bar item order, and the order can change after the first reboot. On macOS Mojave 10.14 and newer, hold Command and drag an icon to its desired position.

Wi-Fi network name shows “Unknown”
The project says macOS requires Location Services permission for an app to read the Wi-Fi network name. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services, enable Location Services and allow Stats, then quit and reopen Stats.
Desktop widgets show no data
Stats disables communication with macOS widgets by default because of a data-load problem involving the chronod system process. If you need desktop widgets, enable the macOS widgets option in Stats settings.

Understand sensor readings and network requests
Sensor labels should not be interpreted as precise per-core readings. Stats describes the values as thermal zones; a label such as “CPU Efficient Core 1” refers to a sensor within a cluster, not necessarily one individual core. The project also notes that Apple changes sensor keys between SoCs, so matching sensor names can take time.

Its documentation lists requests to api.mac-stats.com for update checks and retrieving a public IP address, with api.github.com as a fallback for update checks. According to the project, blocking those servers prevents update checks and removes the public IP display from the network module. These are the project’s disclosures, not an independent security audit.
