To install an available Android security update, open your device’s Settings, go to System → Software update (or the similarly named update option), and follow the on-screen instructions. After installation and any required restart, check Settings → About phone or About tablet → Android version and read the Android security update field.
Prepare your Android device
Updates can be large and may take time. Google recommends connecting to Wi-Fi and charging the device to at least 75% before starting an update. These are Google’s preparation recommendations, not a guarantee that every device uses the same update process. Google Android Help
Check for and install the update
- Open Settings.
- Tap System → Software update, then check the update status. The exact menu wording and location can vary by manufacturer; Pixel devices may show Software updates or System update.
- If an update is available, follow the device’s on-screen instructions to download and install it. You may also be able to start the process from an update notification.

Allow installation to finish and the update to become active
Do not treat a completed download as proof that the update is active. On Pixel phones and Pixel Tablet, downloaded updates install in the background and become active after the next restart. Many other Android devices restart automatically during installation; on those devices, the update becomes active when installation finishes. Follow the prompts shown on your device. Verify the Android security update
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone or About tablet, then tap Android version.
- Find Android security update and note the value displayed there. This is the device-reported security update status.
The same screen may also show Google Play system update and the build number. The Google Play system update is a separate status field; do not use it as a substitute for the Android security update field when checking the result.
Why your Android device may not show an update
- The update has not reached your device yet. Availability and timing vary by device, manufacturer, and carrier. Check the update status again and consult your manufacturer or carrier for model-specific rollout information.
- The device may not support a newer Android version. Older devices do not always qualify for newer releases; the general Settings instructions cannot establish eligibility for a particular model.
- The download did not complete. Google says the device will automatically try again over the next few days and notify you. You can also check update status in Settings.
- There may not be enough free storage. Insufficient space can prevent an update. Follow your device manufacturer’s instructions to free storage, then check for the update again.
If an installation appears stalled or your device’s menus differ, use the manufacturer’s or carrier’s guidance for that specific model. Google’s general instructions cannot determine a device’s eligibility or rollout schedule.
