First identify your exact Radeon model, operating system, and Linux kernel—or, on Windows, confirm that you need the documented PyTorch path. AMD support is specific to GPU model and ROCm release: an RX 7000 or RX 9000 series label alone does not establish compatibility. The Linux steps below are for AMD’s Radeon-specific ROCm 7.2.1 guide; do not reuse its package commands or framework wheels with another release.

Check your GPU, operating system, and ROCm release first

AMD maintains separate compatibility information for Radeon-specific ROCm 7.2.1 and the newer unified ROCm documentation. Its Radeon documentation says ROCm Core SDK documentation is unified across supported hardware starting with version 7.13.0. The unified documentation currently identifies ROCm 10.1.0, and its compatibility matrix was dated August 26, 2026. Choose the release you intend to install, then use that release’s matrix and instructions throughout.

For ROCm 10.1.0, start with AMD’s unified ROCm compatibility matrix. For the Radeon-specific ROCm 7.2.1 instructions, use AMD’s Radeon and Ryzen compatibility matrix. The 7.2.1 Linux matrix lists selected cards, including RX 9060, RX 9060 XT, RX 9070, RX 9070 XT, RX 9070 GRE, RX 7900 XTX, RX 7900 XT, RX 7900 GRE, RX 7700, RX 7700 XT, and RX 7800 XT. These examples are not a promise that every RX 7000 card is supported.

Check all of the relevant entries before installing: exact GPU, distribution and release, kernel, ROCm version, and—if you plan to use one—framework version. For the Radeon-specific 7.2.1 Linux guide, listed combinations include:

ASUS Dual Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB GDDR6 Gaming Graphics Card
  • Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
  • 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
  • Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
  • Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
  • Ubuntu 24.04.4 Desktop with HWE kernel 6.17
  • Ubuntu 22.04.5 Desktop with HWE kernel 6.8
  • RHEL 10.1 with Linux kernel 6.12

These are 7.2.1 combinations, not general requirements for newer ROCm releases. Follow the matrix for your chosen release rather than substituting a newer OS or kernel based on its version number alone.

Choose the Linux or Windows route

Linux is the broader documented Radeon route: AMD’s overview and Linux compatibility material cover multiple frameworks, subject to the specific GPU and release matrix. Windows support is narrower. AMD’s Radeon Windows matrix documents PyTorch for Windows 11 and selected GPUs; it explicitly says the entire ROCm stack is not yet supported on Windows.

Route What AMD documents What to check
Linux Radeon-specific ROCm 7.2.1 instructions and multiple framework options, depending on compatibility Exact GPU, distribution, kernel, ROCm release, and framework in the matching Linux matrix
Windows PyTorch 2.9 with ROCm 7.2.1 components and Python 3.12 on Windows 11 for listed GPUs; not the entire ROCm stack Exact GPU and software combination in AMD’s Radeon Windows compatibility matrix

If your goal is general ROCm system-stack support, do not treat the Windows PyTorch route as equivalent to Linux. If Windows is your intended platform, follow the framework-specific instructions and compatibility entries rather than trying to apply the Linux system installation steps.

Install ROCm 7.2.1 on a supported Linux system

The following sequence reflects AMD’s Radeon-specific ROCm 7.2.1 Linux guide. It is not a verified command sequence for ROCm 10.1.0 or another release. AMD’s newer unified installation documentation describes several methods—including package-manager, amdgpu-install, pip, tarball, and runfile—and the right choice depends on hardware, OS, and use case.

  1. Confirm the combination. Check that the exact GPU, Linux distribution, and kernel appear together in AMD’s 7.2.1 Radeon compatibility matrix.
  2. Install the matching package. Use AMD’s Radeon Linux installation guide to select and install the amdgpu-install package for your supported distribution. The guide supplies distribution- and release-specific package commands; do not copy one for a different Ubuntu release, RHEL version, or ROCm release.
  3. Install graphics and ROCm. AMD recommends the Graphics use case by default. To install open-source graphics and ROCm, the 7.2.1 guide documents:
    amdgpu-install -y --usecase=graphics,rocm
Read the command output and address any errors or warnings rather than assuming installation succeeded.
  4. Reboot, then set device access. Reboot after installation. Add your user to the render and video groups as directed in AMD’s guide, then reboot again so the group changes take effect.
  5. Set up your framework separately. If you need PyTorch, use the framework instructions and compatibility information for the same ROCm release; do not mix wheels from a different release.

Install PyTorch with the matching ROCm release

AMD recommends pip for PyTorch machine-learning development on Radeon Linux and recommends AMD’s ROCm wheels. Check the framework and Python versions against the compatibility matrix, then follow the PyTorch section of the Radeon installation guide for your selected ROCm release.

The 7.2.1 guide’s examples use Python 3.12 on Ubuntu 24.04 and Python 3.10 on Ubuntu 22.04. Those are release- and OS-specific examples, not universal Python requirements. AMD warns that PyTorch.org wheels change regularly and are not tested extensively by AMD, so use the AMD wheel instructions for the matching release rather than copying an old wheel URL or selecting a wheel by framework version alone.

When installation does not work

  • The installer rejects the system or GPU: recheck the exact model, OS release, and kernel against the matrix for the ROCm release you chose. A family name does not establish compatibility.
  • A package command does not match your distribution: return to the release-specific installation guide and select the package for your actual Ubuntu or RHEL version. Do not substitute commands from another ROCm release.
  • The system installed, but your user cannot access the GPU: verify that you followed AMD’s directions to add the user to both render and video, then reboot so the new group membership applies.
  • PyTorch or its wheel fails to install: confirm the ROCm release, operating system, Python version, and PyTorch version are a supported combination. Use AMD’s wheel instructions for that release instead of mixing wheels from different documentation versions.
  • You are on Windows and expect the full ROCm stack: AMD’s Windows documentation covers the listed PyTorch setup, not full ROCm-stack support. Use a supported Linux combination if your workload requires the broader stack.
