To install a PCIe NVMe SSD, first confirm your computer has an M.2 slot that supports PCIe/NVMe and the drive’s physical size. Install the drive with the computer powered off, then use Windows Disk Management to initialize it, create a volume, format it, and assign a drive letter. For a new drive in a modern UEFI computer, GPT is usually the right partition style.
Check compatibility before opening your computer
M.2 describes the SSD’s shape and connector; it does not guarantee that a slot supports NVMe. Check the computer or motherboard manual for an M.2 PCIe/NVMe slot, supported drive dimensions and generation, slot location, mounting hardware, heatsink requirements, and any shared-bandwidth limitations. The exact specifications determine compatibility and performance; the form factor alone does not. Crucial’s installation guide also advises consulting motherboard-specific information when configuration or shared-bandwidth messages appear.
Gather the SSD, a screwdriver if your system requires one, and the computer’s owner or service manual. Back up important files before you start. Laptop access varies considerably, so use the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model rather than assuming the cover or battery can be removed in a particular way.
Install the SSD physically
- Shut down and disconnect power. Unplug a desktop. For a laptop, follow its service instructions; remove the battery only if it is removable and the instructions call for it. As an additional grounding precaution, Crucial suggests touching an unpainted metal surface before handling components.
- Find and open the M.2 slot. Follow the system manual to remove the required panel, cover, heatsink, or retaining screw. Keep track of any parts you remove.
- Seat the SSD. Hold it by its edges, avoid touching the gold contacts, and align the connector notch with the slot. Insert it at the angle specified by the system instructions. Crucial gives about 30 degrees as a general procedure, but follow the computer’s manual if its design differs. Do not force the connection.
- Secure and reassemble. Lower the drive to its mounting point and fasten it with the provided screw or other system hardware, if required. Do not overtighten. Reinstall any heatsink or cover, reassemble the computer, and reconnect power and a battery if you removed one.
Installing a second SSD does not move Windows or existing files onto it: the computer may continue booting from its original drive. Replacing a boot drive involves separate cloning and boot-order steps, which are not part of setting up a new data drive.

Initialize and format the drive in Windows
These instructions apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Open Disk Management by right-clicking Start and selecting Disk Management, searching for Create and format hard disk partitions, or pressing Windows+R, entering diskmgmt.msc, and pressing Enter. Microsoft documents Disk Management for both Windows versions in Disk Management in Windows.
- Identify the new disk. Find it by its status and capacity, and verify it is the SSD you just installed before making changes. If it is marked Offline, bring that disk Online first.
- Initialize it. Right-click the correct disk and select Initialize Disk. Check the disk selected in the dialog, then choose a partition style. For a new disk in an ordinary modern UEFI PC, choose GPT.
- Create a volume and assign a letter. When initialization finishes, right-click the disk’s unallocated space and select New Simple Volume. Follow the wizard: choose the volume size (the maximum uses all available space), assign a drive letter, select a file system—Microsoft says NTFS is usually appropriate—and finish. The formatted volume should then appear in Windows with the assigned letter.
Initialization and formatting are different operations. Initialization sets the partition style; creating and formatting a volume gives storage space a file system and, if selected, a drive letter. Windows permits creating a volume without formatting immediately, but a new data drive generally needs the complete wizard to be usable in File Explorer. Choose GPT or MBR

For most new SSDs in current computers, GPT is the straightforward choice. Use MBR only when an older system or operating system requires it. Microsoft’s GPT/MBR conversion guidance explains the distinction and conversion requirements.

Windows says a disk is uninitialized
Do not initialize it if it should already contain files. Microsoft says initialization is intended for a new disk with no existing data and warns that initializing a disk already in use can erase data. Formatting an existing volume also destroys its data. Back up or investigate the disk before proceeding; do not treat an uninitialized label as proof that the drive is empty.

The SSD does not appear in Disk Management
- Shut down and check that the drive is fully seated and secured.
- Verify in the computer or motherboard manual that the M.2 slot supports PCIe/NVMe and the SSD’s physical size.
- Check that any required mounting hardware or heatsink has been installed as specified.
- Consult the manual for slot sharing or firmware configuration that could affect the connection. These checks narrow down common compatibility and installation issues, but they do not identify a specific cause for every computer.
You need to change GPT to MBR, or MBR to GPT
Microsoft’s documented conversion procedure requires the disk to have no partitions or volumes; removing existing volumes is part of that path. Back up or move data first. If the disk is already in use, do not remove volumes unless you are prepared to lose their contents.
