Download a C64-style font, install it with your operating system’s font tools, then select it in your app. Windows and macOS have documented built-in installation flows. Linux support exists for some C64 fonts, but the steps depend on your distribution and desktop environment.
First decide whether you need a C64-inspired typeface for ordinary text or a font mapped to Commodore PETSCII characters. Those use cases can require different fonts: a PETSCII mapping is not necessarily a suitable substitute for a Unicode font.
Choose a font that fits what you want to type
Commodore 64 fonts vary in more than appearance. Check spacing and character mapping before installing: a fixed-pitch face keeps characters aligned, while a variable-pitch face does not; PETSCII-oriented fonts may map characters differently from ordinary Unicode fonts.

Download from the font creator’s page. Check the file extension and any license or usage terms shown there. If the download is a ZIP archive, extract it before installing.

Install a C64 font on Windows
- Download a .ttf or .otf font file. If it is inside a .zip archive, extract the archive in File Explorer.
- In File Explorer, right-click the font file and select Install. To make it available to every user account on the computer, select Install for all users; Windows may ask you to approve the change. Microsoft Support documents this all-users option in its Manage Fonts in Windows guidance.
- Open the app where you want to use the font and select it from the font list. If it is missing, close and reopen the app; some applications do not detect newly installed fonts immediately.
Install a C64 font on macOS
Apple lists TrueType (.ttf), TrueType Collection (.ttc), OpenType (.otf), and OpenType Collection (.ttc) among the formats supported by Font Book.
- Download the font file and extract it if it is compressed in a ZIP archive.
- In Finder, double-click the font file and click Install. You can also drag the file onto the Font Book app icon or into a Font Book window.
- Font Book validates the font and can flag errors or duplicates. Its default installation location can be Current User or All Users. Current-user fonts are stored in
~/Library/Fonts/; all-user fonts are stored in/Library/Fonts/and require an administrator password. See Apple’s Font Book guide. - Open the app where you want to use the font and select it. If it does not appear, quit and reopen that app.
Install a C64 font on Linux
Some C64 font projects list Linux compatibility: Style64 lists Linux for C64 TrueType, and DiskImagery64 says Linux users can use its bundled .ttf files. However, font installation steps vary by Linux distribution and desktop environment. SIL’s general font installation guidance directs Linux users to distribution-specific instructions rather than documenting one universal workflow.

Use the font manager or installation documentation for your particular distribution and desktop environment. Confirm whether it installs for your account or all users, then reopen the target app if the font is not listed. Do not assume a particular folder, command, or cache-refresh procedure applies across all Linux systems.

If the font does not appear in your app
- Check the file: Make sure you installed the actual font file, not the ZIP archive that contained it.
- Restart the app: Quit and reopen the program where you want to use the font so it can refresh its font list.
- Check the mapping: If ordinary letters display incorrectly or expected symbols are missing, the font may use a PETSCII-oriented mapping rather than the Unicode mapping your app expects.
- Check spacing: If characters do not align in columns, use a fixed-pitch option such as C64 Pro Mono rather than a variable-pitch face such as C64 Pro.
