In Word for Windows, press Ctrl+Alt+Period (.) to insert an ellipsis (…). In Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, or on a Mac, use the app’s symbol or character picker instead; the Word shortcut is not documented as universal across those apps and platforms.
What the ellipsis symbol is
The single character … is an ellipsis. Its Unicode code point is U+2026. It is different from typing three separate periods (…), which remain three characters. You can copy the ellipsis here if needed: ….

Use the keyboard shortcut
Place the insertion point where the ellipsis should appear and press Ctrl+Alt+Period (.). Microsoft lists this as the ellipsis shortcut in Word. If it does not work in your setup, use the symbol menu below; keyboard mappings can vary with configuration. Microsoft’s Word keyboard-shortcut list.
Convert the Unicode code
- Type 2026 where you want the character.
- Immediately press Alt+X. Word converts the hexadecimal code to ….
If another code is selected when you press Alt+X, Word may convert the selected text instead. For Word’s code-entry details, see Microsoft’s Unicode character-code instructions.

Choose it from the symbol menu
- Open Insert > Symbol > More Symbols.
- Find and select the ellipsis character, then choose Insert.
The available characters depend partly on the selected font. If the ellipsis is missing, try a font with broad Unicode coverage, such as Segoe UI Symbol. See Microsoft’s Word symbol instructions.
Use an ellipsis in Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
Do not assume the Word shortcut or Alt+X conversion works in every Office app. Microsoft notes that some programs, including PowerPoint, cannot convert Unicode codes with Alt+X. A symbol picker is the more dependable visual route; for a program that cannot convert the code, Microsoft also suggests Character Map.
