You can add form controls in desktop Word from the Developer tab, but Microsoft’s current Word guidance does not document a standard modern content control named “radio button.” For a single-choice answer, Word documents controls such as a drop-down list; it also offers legacy form controls for compatibility. The “Option Button” insertion path often shown in search results is for Excel, not Word.

Before you start: choose the kind of single-choice control

First decide whether the form needs a round, radio-style control or simply needs the respondent to choose one answer. Microsoft’s Word form guidance documents modern content controls such as drop-down lists and check boxes, as well as legacy form controls. It does not describe a dedicated modern radio-button content control or a universal workflow for grouping legacy controls so only one can be selected.

  • One answer from a list: A drop-down list content control is a documented Word option. It presents the choices without relying on radio-style controls.
  • Radio-style appearance or older-document compatibility: Look under Developer > Legacy Forms. The available controls and behavior can depend on the Word version. Do not assume multiple controls will behave as a mutually exclusive group unless your version supports that behavior.

Microsoft’s instructions for Developer > Insert > Form Controls > Option Button describe Excel, not Word. See Microsoft’s Excel form-controls guidance for that distinction.

Show the Developer tab in Word for Windows

  1. Open Word and select File > Options.
  2. Select Customize Ribbon.
  3. In the list of main tabs, check Developer, then select OK.

The Developer tab provides access to Word’s form controls. Microsoft documents this Windows path in its About content controls guidance.

Insert a Word form control

  1. Open a form template or a blank document, then click where the control should appear.
  2. On the ribbon, select Developer.
  3. For a modern control, choose the suitable item in Controls, such as a Drop-Down List Content Control for a list of choices.
  4. For a legacy control, select Legacy Forms and choose an available legacy form control. Microsoft describes these controls as intended for compatibility with older Word versions.

Microsoft’s Word instructions cover content controls and legacy controls, but do not identify a standard modern radio-button content control. The exact legacy controls available may differ by Word version, so check the choices shown in your desktop installation rather than following Excel’s option-button menu path. See Microsoft’s Word form instructions.

Configure the form and restrict editing if needed

Set control properties

Select a supported content control and choose Developer > Properties to configure its available settings. The properties depend on the control type; this is not a way to turn a drop-down list or checkbox into a radio button.

Platform limits: Windows, Mac, and Word for the web

Microsoft’s Word form guidance covers Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2024, Word 2021, Word 2019, and Word 2016, and lists Mac editions for Microsoft 365, 2024, and 2021. The Developer-tab instructions through File > Options are specifically the Windows path; Mac has a separate workflow in Microsoft’s form guidance.

Word for the web cannot create fillable forms. Microsoft states, “Creating fillable forms isn’t available in Word for the web.” A form authored in desktop Word can be opened and viewed in Word for the web, but create or modify its form controls in the desktop app. When printed, the boxes around content controls do not print.
