To capture a hover menu, move the pointer over its trigger, wait until the menu is open, and take the screenshot before moving the pointer away. With Playwright, call hover() on the trigger locator and then capture the viewport or the relevant element. Choose a crop that shows both the whole menu and enough page context to identify where it came from.

Capture a hover menu with Playwright

Playwright can reproduce the hover state and capture the page while it is visible. Replace the example URL and accessible link name with values from the page you are documenting.

  1. Open the page at the viewport size you intend to document.
  2. Locate the control that opens the menu and hover over it.
  3. Wait for the menu to become visible if it has an animation or delayed content.
  4. Capture the viewport, a selected element, or the full page while the hover state remains active.
  5. Inspect the saved image at its intended display size. Confirm the menu is complete, the pointer does not cover important text, and the crop preserves useful context.
const { chromium } = require('playwright');

(async () => {
  const browser = await chromium.launch();
  const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });

  await page.goto('https://example.com');
  await page.getByRole('link', { name: 'Products' }).hover();
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'products-menu.png' });

  await browser.close();
})();

The example assumes the trigger is a link named “Products.” Use a locator that matches the actual page. If the menu is delayed, prefer waiting for a menu-specific visible condition over an arbitrary fixed pause. For example, when the menu has an accessible label:

await page.getByRole('link', { name: 'Products' }).hover();
await page.getByRole('navigation', { name: 'Products menu' }).waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'products-menu.png' });

Playwright documents locator hover, page screenshots, and screenshots of selected elements in its Page API, Screenshots, and Visual comparisons guidance. These official pages are living documentation; check the API for your installed Playwright version.

Choose the screenshot scope

Capture type Use it when Check before publishing
Viewport The open menu and enough surrounding page context fit in the visible browser area. Ensure the entire menu is inside the viewport and not clipped.
Element You need a close-up of the navigation region. Make sure the selected element’s bounds include the whole open menu.
Full page The screenshot needs to show a long page as well as the menu. Inspect the result: full-page capture of a dynamic page does not guarantee that a transient hover state will remain open throughout the captured output.

For a product-documentation illustration, a viewport capture is often the clearest when it includes the menu and its trigger. An element capture can make details easier to read, but a tight crop that omits the trigger can leave readers unsure where the menu belongs.

Match the site’s actual interaction

First establish how the menu opens. If it opens on hover, hover its trigger. If it opens on click, reproduce the click instead; do not assume every dropdown is hover-triggered. Playwright’s interaction documentation describes hover as a way to trigger dropdowns and hover states.

A screenshot records the page’s visual state at capture time. Keep the pointer over the trigger when you want the hover-open menu to appear. If the goal is to show the page without hover styling, move the pointer away before capturing instead.

Make repeated captures consistent

For a one-off illustration, prioritize a readable crop and a clearly open menu. For visual baselines or repeated documentation updates, use the same browser environment and settings as the baseline where possible. Playwright notes that rendering may vary with the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Record relevant environment details alongside the images if those differences matter to your comparison.

Troubleshoot missing or incomplete menus

  • The menu is closed. Confirm the locator targets the actual trigger and that the site opens this menu on hover. Keep the pointer over the trigger through capture.
  • The screenshot is taken before the menu appears. Wait for the menu content to become visible, or wait for the transition to finish. A universal delay cannot be assumed; use a condition tied to the page.
  • The menu is clipped. Use a viewport large enough for it, or capture an element whose bounds include the full menu. Review the saved image rather than relying only on the page’s appearance before capture.
  • Full-page output loses the hover state. Dynamic state may not persist as expected through full-page capture. Try a viewport or navigation-element capture and check the resulting file.
  • Images differ between runs. Compare captures in a consistent browser and runtime environment; platform and runtime conditions can affect rendering.
  • The pointer obscures menu text. Adjust the screenshot composition if possible, or move the pointer only when doing so will not close the menu. Verify that the menu stays open in the saved result.

ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL with one API request. Its capture workflow removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed; responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents use the take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

For a hover menu, an API screenshot request captures the URL but does not itself move a browser pointer over a trigger. Use the Playwright workflow above when the page must be put into a hover state before capture. ScreenshotNeo also supports element capture and custom JavaScript, which may suit workflows where the page can be placed into the desired state with page code.

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. This cURL example requests a screenshot of a page:
