Improve at Wordle by making each guess answer a question: which letters are present, where can they go, or which remaining answers can this guess separate? Use early turns to gather useful information, then let the feedback narrow your choices—without looking up answers or relying on a supposedly unbeatable opener.
Make every guess serve a purpose
Before you enter a word, decide what you want to learn from it. A guess may check for likely letters, test possible positions, or distinguish between a smaller group of plausible answers. A guess that does none of those things is usually a wasted opportunity.
On early turns, a word with several different letters can help reveal which letters appear in the answer. After the first guess, a New York Times-sourced strategy guide recommends using the next turn as an opportunity to eliminate possibilities rather than simply repeating the same approach (The Irish Times, reporting NYT strategy advice). Treat this as a useful principle, not a rule that overrides the clues you already have.
Turn the color feedback into constraints
After each guess, translate the feedback into a compact record. Green letters belong in the positions where they appeared. Yellow letters are in the answer but not in the positions you tested. Letters marked gray are ruled out only to the extent indicated by the game’s feedback, including cases where a guess used a letter more times than the answer does.
#1 Best Overall
- Keep fixed positions visible so you do not accidentally move a green letter.
- For every yellow letter, note which positions it cannot occupy and consider other placements.
- Keep possible repeated letters in mind; do not discard a candidate just because one copy received green or yellow feedback.
- Track eliminated letters, but interpret repeated-letter feedback carefully rather than treating every gray tile as proof that the letter is absent.
A colored tile identifies useful information, but it does not always tell you the answer’s full letter count. The cited NYT strategy advice and the physical game’s rulebook both warn players to watch for repeats (The Irish Times; Wordle board game rulebook). Preserve duplicate-letter possibilities until the feedback rules them out.
Choose between a broad probe and a plausible answer
When the pattern is still open
If several positions and letters remain uncertain, a guess containing new letters can provide broad information. In normal mode, that may be more valuable than trying another word built mostly from letters you have already tested.

When the candidate pool is narrow
Once the clues leave only a few plausible patterns, use a guess that tests those possibilities or fits the known constraints. Another broad probe can be less useful if it reveals letters but does not help you choose among the remaining candidates. This is a strategic trade-off, not a promise that any approach will solve the puzzle in fewer turns.
Pick a starting approach, not a supposedly perfect word
Starting with several vowels is one published heuristic; choosing a second guess with different letters is another way to support elimination. Neither establishes a universally best opener. The useful choice depends on whether you prioritize broad new-letter coverage or keeping plausible answers available, and on whether Hard Mode is enabled.

| Approach | Potential benefit | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Start with several vowels | Can test for vowel presence early, according to the cited strategy advice. | Does not guarantee useful coverage of consonants or a quick solution. |
| Use different letters on the next turn | Can eliminate more possibilities by testing letters not yet tried. | A broad probe may not preserve or test plausible answer patterns. |
| Favor known positions and plausible candidates | Applies accumulated feedback directly, especially when few patterns remain. | May provide less new-letter information if uncertainty is still broad. |
These approaches can be judged by new-letter coverage, respect for known positions, risk of overlooking repeats, and flexibility under Hard Mode. No current authoritative ranking of opening words is established by the cited sources, so treat starter recommendations as heuristics rather than guarantees.
Know what Hard Mode changes
The cited strategy guide describes Hard Mode as requiring players to use every revealed hint in subsequent guesses (The Irish Times). That constraint can make it harder to spend a turn testing unrelated letters, because later guesses must honor the clues already revealed. Choose it if that added constraint makes the puzzle more enjoyable; whether it helps or hurts an individual result will vary.

Use your results to adjust one habit at a time
After finishing, review your guess distribution and note where the puzzle became difficult. Did you keep probing broadly after the pattern was already narrow? Did you miss a possible repeat? Did your usual opener give you useful information? Change one habit at a time so you can tell whether the adjustment helped.
The New York Times Games app help page confirms that Wordle statistics and streaks are available (NYT Games app help). Use those records to follow your own results over time; the cited sources do not establish a current average human solve count to use as a fair benchmark.

What published solver results can—and cannot—tell you
A 2022 computational study by Chao-Lin Liu modeled Wordle with a historical answer set of 2,315 possible answers. In that simulator, its baseline strategy averaged 4.078 guesses and took more than six trials in 1.77% of cases; the study’s best-performing tested strategy averaged 3.674 guesses and failed in 0.65% of cases (Liu, 2022).
Those are results for the paper’s modeled setup, not a guarantee for human players or a current ranking of opening words. The 2,315-answer set is a historical model input, not a claim about the New York Times’ present answer list.
