If your video doorbell or outdoor camera drops offline, loads slowly, or struggles to show live video, check its Wi-Fi requirements and signal at the installed location before upgrading your internet plan. The cause may be weak coverage, interference, an unsupported Wi-Fi band, incorrect network details, power or router settings, or other devices using the connection.

1. Check the camera’s Wi-Fi requirements

Look up the setup guide for the exact device model and your region. Confirm its supported Wi-Fi band and any network-security or setup requirements; products from the same category do not necessarily support the same bands.

For example, SimpliSafe specifies 2.4 GHz for its wireless outdoor cameras, while Google describes a 2.4 GHz requirement for some Nest outdoor Wi-Fi products in Canada and Europe. Google also warns against connecting a 2.4 GHz-only camera to a 5 GHz network. Check the current instructions for your specific model rather than assuming every camera or doorbell requires 2.4 GHz or supports 5 GHz. See SimpliSafe’s outdoor camera error-message guide, Google’s Wi-Fi setup guidance, and Google’s setup-message troubleshooting.

2. Verify the network name and password

Make sure the device is joining the intended Wi-Fi network (SSID) and that the password is entered correctly. If you recently changed the network name or password, update the camera or doorbell’s Wi-Fi details through the manufacturer’s supported app workflow.

Some Google camera and app combinations may require you to remove and set up the camera again or reset it. A reset is not a first-line check: save any important video clips before resetting, and follow the model-specific instructions. Google explains how to change a camera or doorbell’s Wi-Fi network.

3. Test Wi-Fi at the installed location

Check the device’s connection or signal information in its app, if available, and test the live stream where the camera or doorbell is mounted. A successful setup beside the router does not show that the signal will remain strong through exterior walls or at the final location.

  • 𝐃𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 - Please note that all Wireless Extenders are designed to improve WiFi coverage and not increase speeds. Actual speeds will be 50% or less from current speeds. However, improving signal reliability can boost overall performance

If practical, temporarily move the camera closer to the router and test it again. If the connection improves, coverage at the installed location is a likely problem. Manufacturer guidance identifies weak signal and distance as causes, but does not establish a universal signal-strength threshold for all brands. TP-Link’s Tapo offline troubleshooting guide and Google’s setup guidance cover signal and distance.

4. Reduce distance, obstructions, and interference

If possible, move the router or access point closer to the device, or reduce obstacles between them. Walls, floors, furniture, appliances, and other electronics can weaken or interfere with Wi-Fi; the effect depends on the building and equipment.

TP-Link WiFi Extender with Ethernet Port, Dual Band 5GHz/2.4GHz, Up to 44% More Bandwidth Than Single Band, Covers Up to 1200 Sq.ft and 30 Devices, Signal Booster Amplifier Supports OneMesh(RE220)
  • Dual Band WiFi Extender: Up to 44% more bandwidth than single band N300 WiFi extenders. Boost Internet WiFi coverage up to 1200 square feet and connects up to 30 devices(2.4GHz: 300Mbps; 5GHz: 433Mbps)

Nearby electronics can also contribute to interference. TP-Link lists microwave ovens, Bluetooth devices, USB 3.0 devices, and baby monitors among possible sources. Try changing the placement of the camera, router, or nearby equipment and test the stream again. Google’s setup guide describes common obstructions; Google’s Nest Wi-Fi troubleshooting covers distance and connection issues.

5. Check power, software, router status, and network use

  • Power: Use the power source specified by the manufacturer. TP-Link notes that a third-party power supply can cause instability for its devices.
  • Restart: Restart the camera or doorbell and, if appropriate, the router, mesh equipment, or extender. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the device.
  • Updates: Keep the device firmware and companion app current.
  • Router settings: Check the router and device status if the problem persists; router settings can affect connectivity.
  • Network load: If the camera struggles mainly while other devices are using a lot of internet bandwidth, test again when that activity has stopped. Google identifies competing bandwidth use as a possible factor.

These checks address potential causes identified in TP-Link’s Tapo troubleshooting guide and Google’s Nest Wi-Fi guidance.

6. Add coverage if the simple checks do not solve it

If temporarily moving the camera closer improves its connection but the device must stay in its original location, consider a Wi-Fi range extender or mesh system. TP-Link suggests both; Google recommends strengthening the signal when relocation improves the connection. Placement matters: coverage equipment needs a usable connection to the existing network and must be positioned to serve the camera’s location. Check that the camera’s Wi-Fi band and network settings are compatible with the equipment.

Option When it may fit What to consider
Range extender A specific area near the camera needs better coverage. Place it where it can still connect well to the existing network and reach the camera. Check compatibility with the camera’s supported band and network settings.
Mesh Wi-Fi system Coverage is weak across multiple areas of the home, or you already use mesh equipment. Node placement and the camera’s requirements still matter. If you already have mesh or an extender, restarting it may help with some connection problems.
Access point You can configure home-network equipment and want to extend coverage to a particular area. This requires network setup. The cited manufacturer guidance does not compare access points with extenders or mesh systems.

No universal winner or comparative performance figure is established for these options. Choose based on the area that needs coverage, where equipment can be placed, the camera’s supported Wi-Fi band and network settings, whether wired backhaul is available, and the setup you are comfortable managing. These are equipment-category options, not tested product recommendations. See TP-Link’s troubleshooting guide, Google’s Nest setup troubleshooting, and Ring’s router-problem guidance.
