You can often improve Wi-Fi without buying a new router: first compare performance near the router with performance in the problem area, then try moving the router to a more central, open, elevated position. If only one room or device remains affected, a correctly placed extender, Ethernet connection, or powerline adapter may help—but each works differently, and compatibility and home layout matter.

Diagnose whether the problem is coverage, a device, or your internet service

Before changing equipment, compare the connection in two places: near the router and where Wi-Fi is unreliable. Also check whether the problem affects one device or several. This helps distinguish a weak wireless signal from a broader connection or device issue.

  • Works well near the router, but poorly elsewhere: distance, walls, floors, furniture, or interference may be limiting coverage.
  • One device struggles in several locations: the device itself may be the limiting factor.
  • Several devices are slow even near the router: check the internet service and router connection rather than assuming the problem is Wi-Fi range.

Distance, physical barriers, nearby Wi-Fi traffic, household devices, the connected device’s capabilities, and ISP service can all affect performance. Google’s wireless-network troubleshooting guidance covers these factors.

Move the router before buying anything

When practical, place the router near the center of the area where you use Wi-Fi, elevated off the floor, and in the open. Avoid hiding it in a cabinet or placing it behind dense obstructions. The Federal Communications Commission’s consumer guidance says, “In order to maximize Wi-Fi coverage in your home, try to place your router in a central location.” See the FCC consumer guidance document.

There is no universally ideal spot: the best position depends on the home’s layout and construction, where the modem connection enters, and the locations that need coverage. Google likewise describes router placement as dependent on the home and its use patterns in its Wi-Fi speed guidance.

  1. Note the current performance in the weak area and near the router.
  2. Move the router to a more central, elevated, open position if the cable and power allow it.
  3. Retest in the same locations. Change one factor at a time so you can tell whether the move helped.

Reduce avoidable obstacles and interference

Keep the router and any relay point away from dense barriers where possible. Thick walls, floors, large furniture, and appliances can obstruct the signal; nearby Wi-Fi networks and some household devices can also contribute to interference. If a particular device has trouble, test it in a less obstructed location as well.

Google’s interference guidance discusses household sources of interference and options such as extenders and powerline adapters. A change in position is most useful when you retest the same problem location afterward.

Use an extender for a persistent weak area

A Wi-Fi range extender receives the router’s signal and rebroadcasts it, potentially improving coverage in a particular area. It cannot relay a useful connection if it is placed where the router’s signal is already unusable. Position it between the router and the weak area, balancing a strong connection back to the router with reach toward the target room, then check performance there.

The FCC lists range extenders and mesh routers among home coverage options, and Google explains that extenders rebroadcast a router’s signal. Neither makes every product compatible with every router. Check the exact extender and router documentation before buying; the router model is needed to make a model-specific compatibility recommendation.

Choose the connection that fits the device and home

Option What it helps Compatibility and setup What affects results
Wi-Fi range extender Can extend wireless coverage into a weak area. Needs a usable signal from the router; check compatibility with the exact router. Placement, obstacles, and the strength of the signal it receives.
Ethernet Provides a wired connection for one stationary device, such as a computer or TV; it bypasses Wi-Fi congestion for that device. Requires an Ethernet cable run between the router and device. Cable-routing practicality. It does not expand wireless coverage for other devices.
Powerline adapters Carry network connectivity over the home’s electrical wiring and may help where walls or floors impede Wi-Fi. Requires adapter units and electrical outlets; suitability depends on the home’s wiring. Results vary with the home and its electrical wiring; this is not a guaranteed fix.
Mesh equipment Uses multiple compatible points to provide coverage across an area. Compatibility is system-specific; mesh equipment is not automatically a generic add-on for an existing router. Point placement, distance between points, and obstacles.

For example, Google Wifi cannot function as a generic extender or repeater for an existing router; its mesh function is limited to compatible Google/Nest Wifi devices. Check the exact model documentation before buying any mesh system. Google’s Google Wifi overview explains this limitation.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

For a stationary device, Ethernet is often the most direct way to avoid that device’s Wi-Fi link and reduce its use of wireless capacity. It will not improve wireless coverage elsewhere. Google’s Wi-Fi speed guidance also describes Ethernet as an option.

Powerline adapters are another possibility when the home’s construction makes wireless reach difficult, but performance depends on the electrical wiring. Google includes them among possible connectivity options in its interference guidance.

What to check if performance is still poor

  • Poor near the router on several devices: verify that the ISP connection is working as expected and consider whether the router or service is the limiting factor.
  • Poor on only one device: compare with another device in the same place to identify whether the problem follows the device.
  • A newly placed mesh point has a weak connection: move it closer to its upstream point and retest. Google’s mesh test guide explains how distance and obstacles affect mesh performance.
  • A room remains weak after repositioning: consider a compatible extender, a wired Ethernet run for a fixed device, or powerline adapters if the home’s wiring and layout make them practical.
