If needed, make a small brightness or contrast adjustment, one control at a time. These are practical experiments—not a proven, universal fix: available evidence does not test TV settings against cricket broadcasts or show that a particular accessory improves visibility.
Why the ball can be hard to follow
Visibility can change during a match as daylight fades and floodlights take over. The ball also moves across different backgrounds—sky, pitch, outfield, and stadium—and can be difficult to track when its contrast against a particular background is low. The broadcast image adds another layer: evidence about balls in live play does not establish how a particular camera, broadcast, or streaming app will render them on your TV.
A 2017 peer-reviewed study examined red, white, and pink cricket balls under lighting and background conditions associated with day-night play. Its available abstract reports that, in one tested dusk condition, a fast-moving pink ball was impossible to see against the grandstands. The paper distinguishes color contrast from luminance contrast: both contribute to visibility, while luminance contrast is especially relevant to perceiving motion. Those findings concern match conditions, not TV picture settings. Read the 2017 study.
A 2024 study investigated luminance contrast for new and old red, white, and pink balls across lighting and background combinations experienced in day-night cricket. It reinforces that visibility can depend on the ball’s color and wear, the light, and the background; detailed numeric results are not available on the publisher page cited here. Read the 2024 study. A 2021 study also examined elite umpires’ opinions about pink-ball visibility, though its available abstract does not provide detailed results. Read the 2021 study.

How to adjust your viewing setup
- Reduce reflections. Move or dim a lamp that reflects in the screen, close blinds if daylight is shining on it, or shift your viewing angle. This is sensible glare management, but its effect on tracking a cricket ball has not been quantified in the cited evidence.
- Compare the TV’s picture modes on the live feed. Try the normal or sports mode already available on your TV and judge which makes the ball easiest to follow without making the rest of the picture look unnatural. Mode names and effects vary by manufacturer, so there is no universally best setting.
- Change one picture control at a time. If the picture looks too dim, try a small increase to the relevant brightness control. If the ball blends into its surroundings, compare a modest contrast adjustment. “Brightness” can refer to panel or backlight level or to black level, depending on the TV; consult the TV’s guide and judge the image rather than relying on the label. If a change washes out the picture or hides detail, return to the previous setting.
- Check playback options without assuming they are a fix. Google notes that frame-rate matching, resolution, and dynamic-range options depend on the connected TV and content. They may affect playback characteristics, but the cited guidance does not show that changing them improves ball visibility. Don’t force HDR, motion interpolation, or a particular frame rate without evidence specific to your TV and viewing service. See Google’s device guidance.
Google’s Ambient Display documentation says a Google TV screen in screensaver mode may adjust brightness based on room light. That is a note about ambient or screensaver behavior—not evidence that automatic room-light adjustment works the same way during a live match. Read Google’s Ambient Display documentation.
Why the TV experience may differ from the on-field view
Players, umpires, and television viewers do not necessarily perceive the ball the same way. In a 2015 Cricket Australia report, then-head of cricket operations Sean Cary said: “Having said that, I know from a fan and a TV viewer perspective, the pink ball sticks out like a beacon and it is quite surprising to hear the players struggle to pick it up both under lights and in natural daylight.” This is a historical, anecdotal account—not a current ball specification or proof that a TV-side change will help. A 2016 Cricket Australia report describes Josh Hazlewood’s experience of difficulty around twilight and when fielding square of the wicket. He said a change from a dark green seam to a black seam had helped in that context. That is evidence about an on-field player’s experience; it does not establish that viewers should use a filter or alter TV color settings. Read the Cricket Australia report.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to try a different approach
Pay attention to what the problem looks like and when it happens. If room lights or windows are reflected on the screen, start with glare. If the ball is difficult to follow only against particular backgrounds or during twilight, the challenge may be the changing contrast in the scene rather than a setting that can be corrected across the whole picture. If it appears blurry or breaks up, the TV, broadcast, or streaming service may be relevant, but the evidence cited here does not identify a specific cause or remedy.

To get tailored settings, you would need to consider the TV model, broadcaster or app, current picture mode, and whether the issue is glare, blur, or low contrast. Without those details, compare settings on the same live feed, change only one thing at a time, and restore the previous setting if the picture gets worse. This is informal troubleshooting, not a controlled test.
The studies and reports cited here do not measure how much a viewer can improve visibility by changing a TV setting, adjusting room light, or buying an accessory. They therefore do not support a particular TV setting, anti-glare product, streaming device, or optical aid as a proven solution.
