Avoid sitting with a bright window behind you, then adjust brightness in the camera preview until your face is visible without looking washed out. You usually do not need a studio setup: start by changing your position, controlling backlight and using a lamp you already own.
How should you position the light?
Start with the brightest light source in the room. Face a window if practical, or turn your desk so the window is in front of you or off to one side. Side light can add shape to your face; it does not have to be perfectly centered. Webex describes using a window beside the speaker and a shaded lamp on the other side to light both sides of the face (Webex lighting guidance).
Avoid placing a bright window or lamp directly behind you. The camera may expose for the bright background, leaving your face dark or silhouetted. Logitech’s video-meeting guidance also cautions that strong light behind a participant can create this effect, while bright sunlight can produce sharp contrast (Logitech meeting-space guidelines).
If you cannot move the desk, close blinds or curtains to reduce the background brightness, then add a soft light in front of you. Check the camera image after each change; the goal is to balance your face and background, not to make the whole frame as bright as possible.

How to set up a soft face light
- Put the light near the webcam. Place a desk lamp or video light near camera height and close to the camera’s direction. Aim it toward your face, not directly into your eyes. Elgato recommends a soft face-level light when a front-facing window is unavailable, and eVisit describes a desk lamp behind the webcam as fill light (Elgato’s video-conferencing setup guide; eVisit lighting recommendations, version 4.1).
- Soften or reposition harsh light. If the face looks flat, overly bright or sharply shadowed, dim the lamp, diffuse it if you have a suitable diffuser, or move it slightly off-center. A light-colored wall can also bounce light toward the shadowed side.
- Add fill only if needed. If one side of your face is much darker, use a second, dimmer light on that side. Keep it weaker than the main light so the image retains some natural dimension. Webex describes key and fill lighting as a way to reduce shadows while preserving dimension (Webex lighting guidance).
- Adjust in the preview. Raise or lower brightness until facial detail is clear. If your face looks washed out, dim or soften the light; if it looks dark, brighten the face or reduce the background brightness.
How to handle color, glasses and screen glare
Different light sources can make parts of the image look noticeably warm or cool. BenQ gives neutral white around 4000K–5000K as a typical starting range for video calls; Logitech describes 3000K–4500K as typical for diffused fluorescent fixtures in office settings. These are context-specific recommendations, not a required camera setting. Use the preview to judge whether your face looks natural and the room lights appear consistent (BenQ lighting guidance; Logitech meeting-space guidelines).
Webex discusses approximately 6000K LEDs as an option for mixing with daylight and about 2700K for warmer light; treat those as that source’s guidance rather than universal calibration rules. It also warns that daylight mixed with incandescent or overhead lighting can create an orange-or-blue cast (Webex lighting guidance). If the color changes during the day, adjustable-color lighting can make it easier to match the room.

If your glasses show a bright ring or hotspot, move the light farther away, slightly above or to one side, or reduce its brightness. Reflections on glasses and screens are placement issues identified in BenQ’s guide (BenQ lighting guidance). Review the webcam image after moving the light; the room may look fine in person while the camera still catches glare.
Which lighting option should you use?

Choose based on what the light illuminates, how soft and adjustable it is, whether it reflects in your glasses, and how it mounts around your camera and desk. What to check before a call
- Is your face clearly visible, with detail rather than a washed-out patch?
- Is the background much brighter than your face?
- Do your glasses or monitor show a distracting reflection?
- Does the light create a deep shadow on one side or under your eyes?
- Do the room lights make your face look unusually orange or blue?
Open the meeting app’s camera preview, make small changes to the light’s position or brightness, and check the image again. Elgato recommends checking the preview shortly before a call (Elgato’s video-conferencing setup guide). Once the setup looks balanced, leave the light and chair in place so the arrangement is easy to repeat.
