The most reliable way to improve Steam Deck battery life without making games feel worse is to tune settings per game: choose a frame-rate target that suits the action, keep refresh rate within your screen’s limit, and reduce power or graphics demands only as far as you can comfortably accept. Save each setup as a per-game profile instead of applying one compromise to every title.
Why Steam Deck battery life varies by game
Battery use depends on the game and on settings such as frame rate, screen brightness, and volume. Valve lists the OLED Steam Deck with a 50Wh battery and estimates 3–12 hours of gameplay. That estimate is based on titles running at 30 FPS, 50% brightness, and 50% volume; Valve notes that uncapped frame rates and higher brightness or volume can discharge the battery faster. It is a broad estimate, not a runtime guarantee for a specific demanding game. Valve’s Steam Deck product page also lists APU power as 4–15W; that specification is not a recommended TDP setting for every game.
How to tune a game for a better balance
Make one change at a time, then play in the same scene or type of gameplay long enough to judge whether the trade-off is worthwhile. Watch for smoothness, image clarity, heat, and fan noise as well as battery use. There is no single FPS or TDP setting that suits every title.
1. Choose a frame-rate limit the game can sustain
Start with a frame-rate target that feels acceptable for the game’s pace. A slower-paced game may remain comfortable at a lower target, while fast action may benefit from smoother motion. An uncapped frame rate can use extra power when the game renders more frames than you need, so try a cap and compare the feel before lowering other settings.

2. Keep refresh rate within the screen’s limit
The LCD Steam Deck display supports up to 60Hz; the OLED display supports up to 90Hz. Set refresh rate no higher than the cap for your model. Valve warns that an individual application’s refresh-rate setting above its model’s cap will not improve performance and may drain battery faster. 3. Reduce power or graphics demands only if needed
If the game still uses more power than you want, experiment with the available TDP limit, GPU clock, resolution or scaling, and in-game graphics settings. Lowering these can affect performance or image quality, so adjust in small steps and keep the change only if the game remains playable to you. Valve documents these controls as tuning options, but no fixed amount of extra runtime is established for a particular change.

4. Save the settings for that game
Steam Deck lets you save performance settings per game or app. Keep separate profiles for demanding games and lighter titles, so a battery-saving setup for one game does not unnecessarily limit another. Valve described per-game profiles and tuning controls in its April 2022 Steam Deck announcement.
What to do if battery life or performance seems unusually poor
- Install available system updates, then restart the Deck.
- Check whether third-party applications are running and close any you do not need while playing.
- If the problem persists or suggests a hardware fault, contact Valve Support. Valve advises against opening or modifying the Deck as a troubleshooting step.
Using a power bank while travelling
A compatible USB-C Power Delivery (PD) power bank can provide charging away from an outlet, but it does not reduce the game’s power draw. Check the bank’s USB-C PD output and compatibility with the Deck before buying. Valve lists a 45W USB-C PD power supply for the OLED model; that does not mean every power bank will meet the device’s needs or provide a predictable number of extra play hours.
