For a more stable PlayStation Portal Remote Play connection, connect your PS5 to the router with Ethernet if you can, and connect the Portal to a stable 5 GHz Wi-Fi network. If the PS5 must use Wi-Fi, Sony recommends putting both devices on the same Wi-Fi network. Then reduce other network activity and check the Portal’s network status. Sony recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience, but speed alone cannot guarantee smooth play.
Improve the connection in this order
Work through these checks before replacing your router or buying new equipment. Sony says Remote Play quality can vary with the network environment, so make one change at a time and see whether the connection improves.

- Check whether the problem affects other devices. Test Wi-Fi on a phone or computer. If those devices also have trouble, the issue may be with the home connection; Sony recommends contacting your internet service provider. On the Portal, open the Quick Menu and go to Settings > Network to check its network settings. Sony’s PS Portal Remote Play support page provides its connection guidance.
- Pause competing network activity. Pause downloads on connected devices and reduce other heavy network use while playing. Sony includes both steps in its troubleshooting guidance.
- Improve the Portal’s Wi-Fi link. Connect the Portal to 5 GHz Wi-Fi when the signal is stable where you play. Move the Portal and PS5 closer to the router, and reduce obstacles between the devices and router. If your router’s band steering repeatedly switches the Portal between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz and causes instability, disable band steering if the router allows it.
- Connect the PS5 to the router with Ethernet, if practical. Sony recommends a wired internet connection for the PS5. This removes the PS5’s Wi-Fi link from the connection path; it does not guarantee that the Portal’s wireless connection will be problem-free. If your PS5 currently uses Wi-Fi, an Ethernet cable is the relevant change to try. Sony does not specify a cable model or category.
- Check the Portal’s network diagnostic. Open the Quick Menu and select Troubleshoot > Show Network Status. Sony lists this as the way to view network status on the Portal. Sony’s PS Portal software information page gives the menu path.
Choose the right connection path for the PS5
Sony’s default recommendation is Ethernet for the PS5. If wiring the console is impractical, use Wi-Fi and, if possible, place the PS5 and Portal on the same Wi-Fi network. The better practical choice depends on whether you can run a cable and whether Wi-Fi is stable in the room where you play.

Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi when it is stable where you play
Sony recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Portal. In practice, the useful choice is the band that delivers a stable signal in your playing area: 5 GHz may be less reliable if coverage is weak there. If band steering is moving the Portal between bands and the connection becomes unstable, turn band steering off if your router offers that setting. Sony does not recommend a particular router or say that a new one is always needed.

Understand the speed recommendations
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s 2024 PlayStation Blog update announcement says the Portal requires Wi-Fi of at least 5 Mbps and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better play experience. Sony’s current support and product guidance also repeat the 15 Mbps recommendation. Read Sony’s 2024 announcement.
These figures are guidance, not a promise that play will be smooth at a particular speed. Sony says quality varies with the network environment and emphasizes connection stability and local Wi-Fi conditions. Its cited guidance does not give a Portal-specific latency target, packet-loss threshold, guaranteed resolution at each speed, or measured improvement percentage.

What to expect on public Wi-Fi
The Portal can work on suitable broadband Wi-Fi away from home, including some public networks that require sign-in validation. However, Sony cautions that public Wi-Fi quality may be outside your control. If performance is poor on a public network, you may not be able to change its congestion, coverage, or configuration.
