For a still scene, start with your phone’s built-in night mode, steady the phone on a firm surface, and keep it still until the capture finishes. For a moving person or pet, add light if you can: a long or multi-frame night capture may brighten the scene but cannot guarantee that motion will look sharp. The “13MP” label alone does not tell you how well a particular phone handles low light.
Why 13MP does not predict low-light quality
Megapixels describe image resolution, not the camera’s full low-light capability. The 13MP figure does not identify the sensor, lens, stabilization, camera software, or modes available on your phone. Those details vary by model, so there is no single setting or result that applies to every 13MP camera.
Without the phone’s make and model, use the steps below as a general workflow. Exact controls and mode names vary between camera apps.
Use night mode for a still scene
Look for a setting called Night mode, Night Sight, Night Vision, or something similar. Depending on the phone, it may switch on automatically in dim light, appear in the mode carousel, or be under a “More” menu. Follow the camera app’s own prompts rather than assuming every phone has the same control.

Night modes can take longer or combine multiple frames to gather detail. Google’s Pixel guidance recommends holding still during Night Sight, while Apple says supported iPhones may take several seconds to capture a Night mode photo, depending on how dark the scene is. On supported iPhones, the mode appears when the camera detects low light. These instructions are specific to those devices, not a guarantee that another phone works the same way.
Keep the phone steady until the capture finishes
- Wipe the camera lens. A smudge can make a photo look hazy; check the lens before changing settings.
- Frame the scene before tapping the shutter. Avoid shifting your grip while composing.
- Brace the phone. Rest it on a secure, stable surface, or use a smartphone tripod if no suitable surface is available.
- Tap the shutter and wait. Keep the phone still until the camera indicates the capture is complete; do not lower it immediately after tapping.
- Check the image at full size. If it is blurred, consider whether the phone moved or the subject moved before trying again.
Google recommends a steady surface or tripod for Pixel astrophotography, and Apple likewise says a solid surface or tripod can help with Night mode. NASA’s smartphone astrophotography guide also discusses tripod use for night-sky captures; that specialized use does not make a tripod necessary for ordinary indoor snapshots. A secure surface is a no-cost alternative.

Choose the approach based on whether the subject moves
| Situation | What to try | What to expect |

| Still scene with little light | Use night mode if available and brace the phone or use a tripod. | A longer or combined capture can help with a stationary scene, but the result depends on the phone and conditions. |
| Moving person, pet, or vehicle | Add light or move the subject nearer to available light. If the camera offers manual controls, try a faster shutter speed. | A faster capture can reduce motion blur, but the photo may be darker or noisier. A steady phone alone will not freeze subject motion. |
| Basic or unknown camera app | Try its low-light mode if present and stabilize the phone. | Night mode is not available on every handset. Do not assume a particular setting or compatibility. |
When manual controls are available
Some phones provide Pro or manual controls such as shutter speed and ISO. Samsung documents these controls on supported Galaxy phones, but the useful values depend on the device, light, and movement in the scene; there is no universal ISO or shutter-speed number for an unspecified 13MP camera.
For a moving subject, a faster shutter may trade brightness for less blur. Review the result and adjust only if your camera app exposes the relevant controls. If the subject is still, night mode and a stable phone are usually the simpler first attempt.

Check compatibility and app-specific limits
- Google Pixel Camera: Google’s low-light guidance covers Night Sight on Pixel devices. The camera app’s prompts and available features depend on the model.
- Camera from Google: Google says Night mode is limited to selected compatible devices. Its help page also says HDR being on prevents Night mode from working in that app; do not assume that interaction applies to other camera apps.
- Samsung Galaxy: Samsung’s UK support page, updated July 26, 2023, describes Galaxy Night mode as combining 30 images and lists supported models. Treat both the number and compatibility information as Samsung-specific, not as a general description of night modes or a current compatibility list for every device.
- Apple iPhone: Apple’s Night mode guidance applies to supported iPhone models. The mode can take several seconds depending on darkness, so keep the phone steady until capture completes.
For exact steps, identify the phone model and camera app, then consult that manufacturer’s instructions. If the app offers no night mode or manual controls, stabilize the phone and improve the available light rather than relying on a setting your device may not have.
